Metro Headlights Packed Up - corblimeyguvnar
Hello All
Just got a little runabout (see previous thread for reason!), a Metro, 1993, Diesel, only 116,000 miles, lovely little runner etc etc, anyway, one of the sidelights was out so I changed the bulb (even I can just about manage this), now both of the headlights dont work.
Have checked all the fuses, bulbs are OK.
Full beam works on 'flash' but not on push stalk forward 'On' position, headlights on dip just dont work at all, sidelights now OK, praise the lord.
Any ideas?, a mate suggested something about a headlight relay (whatever that is), other said the switch must be duff, cant work out how changing a sidelight would do this but maybe its just a coincidence?
Over to you clever people, any suggestions before I take it to the local garage, desperately need this motor to get to work, even though its a bit of a banger, and cant afford a bill that is more than I paid for the car!.
Cheers

Quite a regular fault on Metros. Remove the column shrouds; [don't break the fragile hazard switch!] and you'll see a black wire broken away from a soldered joint on the lower left side of the column switch, just below the lighting stalk.

You can either fit a complete new switch for mega-bucks; or simply re-solder the wire.

Cheers, will take a look at that, nice one.

Mnaged to remove covers without breaking anything, miracle that was.
Unfortunately all black wires appear to be connected.
When you say 'Mega-Bucks' what sort of price are we talking? :-/

It is worth checking this relay.
It is situated in the fuse board under the steering wheel, slightly to the right.
Remove the cover by turning the two plastic screws.

Bit the bullet and took it to a garage, new switch unit, apparantly I managed to blow the switch (and something else which I cant remember) while changing a side light bulb!!, fair play to the garage though, £75 for new switch and only 3/4 of an hours labour, £110 inc VAT, and they tightened the fan belt because it started squeeking!
Let us pray that nothing else goes wrong because I'm brassik til pay day.
:-)
Cheers for the help anyway.
