My 2 litre petrol Mk3 golf has a jerky throttle response. If you back off the throttle then accelerate again it has an annoying jerkiness. Not a problem when driving at a steady speed but noticeable at each gear change. Any ideas?

5 speed manual 1.8 petrol . Very odd rattle from geaarbox when hot (not when cold). If I push the pedal down the noise dissapears , but................also when I slightly push the gear lever forward or back without using the clutch the noise dissapears . This cant be thrust bearing can it ? Would it be the gear shafts inside rattling ? Read more

I want to replace the front pads on a Daihatsu cuore 1999 year.
I have replaced pads on other makes before but never on a Daihatsu. Any advice would be appreciated.
I have 2 problems; one there are 4 bolts at back of caliper two on rubber mounts the problem is which two to remove to remove caliper. The second problem is that the pads also run on guide pins and there is no obvious access at the back to tap them out.
Assuming I get caliper off what torque should bolts be retorqued to.
Many thanks in advance

Job done guide pins are held by a spring system and once removed they come out. Not strictly necessary to remove caliper but it can be pivoted to help push back piston.

Been asked to check over some "nearly new" cars. Its for a customer's wife (I sold him a Merc - now he wants to get a small car for his wife and has asked me to look at a few for him). They have spotted some v v cheap Suzukis at local dealer and at a car supermarket. Suzuki Ignis and new Swift with 'demo' mileage. Obviously I can check the usual stuff (evidence of damage/repairs) etc - but I have little experience of these cars. Anyone know of any 'stock faults'? I've read through the spec on them and they look OK (lots of airbags, VVT engine etc..)! I would normally point them to a Micra but must admit that the Suzukis are very cheap at the moment! We have a 10 year old Vitara which has been a model of reliability and sturdyness. I have looked at the new Swift and to be honest I'd have the Sport over and above the Mini!

How Does the Dual Mass Flywheel work.
My 54 plate VW Golf TDi has been juddering when accelerating in 3rd gear with the engine warm since i brought it a month ago and Volkswagen yesterday have diagnosed it as clutch judder or could be the dual mass flywheel but won't know for certain till the gearbox is out.
If it is the dual mass flywheel do i demand them to change the clutch at the same time or just go with the flow??
Has anyone else experienced this problem with their Tdi Golf and what was done to fix it? Read more

They're available seperately, or as a kit. Just like you can buy a cambelt, or a cambelt kit containing tensioners etc.

can someone tell me what exactly is a van, I'm thinking of getting landrover freelander commercials for my reps - would these count as commercial and so attract the £500 flat rate. also what about pick ups such as Mitsubishi's or nissan Navara's. Many Thanks

thanks for this. it's probably worth it for me, I'm paying around £2500 per year on a saab 9-5 estate ( which I'm very happy with - the car that is , not the tax !)but the reps probably won't save that much if we get them decent diesels - honda accords come to mind.

Ive had a long running problem with my 2litre 110 HDi Pug 406 Engine Management System. The warning light (K light I beleive its known as) has been pretty well stuck on for over a year and despite several attempts to fix it by two Pug garages, Im now at a point where (I'm told) either the wiring loom or the ECU itself needs replacing - both together are in the order of 1700 pounds. As the car is 6 years old shortly, with 83K on the clock, this is out of the question. Various wiring changes have been made, the fule switch has been chenged a total of three times (certainly at least twice) and various "tweaks" but although the light will go out for a few days (once it stayed off for three weeks!), even today, its back on.

The card drives extremely well however. (Full service history and all that). Apart from, that is, when the engine is very cold (i.e when the outside temp is at 2 degrees celcius or less, when the engines idling speed will rise from arounf 950 to 1100/1200 rpm, and the car can be very sluggish indded (even with the gas pedal on the floor). Once the engine has warmed up, then tt is fine. If the outside temp is around 4/5 degrees C, then even this doesnt happen.

The ECU itself is a Bosch EDC15C2, and I have the print out from analyser from the last time it was looked at. It says:

"Intermittent fault. Accelerator pedal signal 2. Signal short circuited to earth."

Seems to me that there's either a specific wiring fault that can be corrected without changing the whole loom, or the ECU itself is toast and needs changing. (I'm thinking this might be the case due to the engines behaviour when very cold.)

However, Im no mechanic so Id be very grateful to hear from any body who might have experienced a similar problem, or of course any kind eprson who can offer me some advice. Thank you for reading this lengthy note, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

wish I knew Howard, but taking off the battery does indeed seem to reset the EMU. Before you do this is it worth having the system rescanned to see what fault codes now come up? I believe that the EMU does not store faults, so it needs to be scanned with the dash warning light still lit. Just a thought. I did come across a very specialist forum which others know about on here with a pretty amazing Pug specialist. Whilst I think it's out of order here to promote other places, it might help. FWIW I had 168k aout of my 406HDI110 with no probs until it bust a fuel return pipe & ran out of fuel. Was never the same after that.

The only observation I could have on low temps is either a dry joint contracting, or I think if it's really cold it does a kind of a glow-plug thing, but I don't know for sure. Can't wait to here what the real culprit turns out to be!

Odd post I know but I know you guys will be able to help me.

I was watching Police Camera Action last night from around the early 90s.

The cops were chasing someone and had a Senator, a Range Rover and another big car which rang a faint bell and brought an odd memory back to me.

Trouble is, I can't remember for the life of me what they were. I have an inkling it was sold under the Opel name - I'm 90% sure it's either a Vauxhall or an Opel.

The back lights were like a bar and were a lot more square than those of the Senator and had a look of a) an American car and b) an old Cavalier. I'm afraid that's all I can give you.

If you said the name, chances are I'd know it.

Any help please?

I used to have a megane and the lamba senser in the exhaust pipe failed after symtoms like this.
Eventually it just ticked over but would not go.
Just kept stalling. You need a diagnostic check on it.

The real problem and your original problem description do not match. But there you go as long as you are fixed all is well.; R10 can be troublesome. Regards Peter
