Hi,

On the Vectra C/Signum - does anyone know how to remove the blanks that cover switch positions for unused switch positions?

The probably prise out - but obviously I dont want to damage the surrounding console surround.

Thanks in anticipation Read more

Don't know for sure but my Cavalier blanks certainly all prised out & my new Zafira dash blanks look like they will prise out too. If you let a dealer do it, you will 9 times out of 10 end up with nice gouges on the surrounding dash! Haynes manual recommends a piece of card as protection between screwdriver & surround, but if you are replacing with a switch (or use a new blank) it might be easier to carefully "stab" the blank in the middle and lever it out that way.

I wonder if anyone on the forum has used or subscribed to Renault's Infotech website. I still cannot get the Kangoo 1.9 D started, and have a hunch it's related to the stop solenoid, whether immobiliser related or other. I need a wiring diagram and operational overview to try and fathom it. The subscription is from £30 per hour, and I wonder if I could find what I'm after in an hour! Thats unless one of you already has a cure.....!! Thanks

I bought the CD manuals from ebay.
Twice.
First set wouldn't run
Second set ran but didn't include the entire range as advertised.
For me significantly the Espace MkIII was missing.
Not worth the bother.

Looks interesting, but frankly I'm sceptical too. Read more

All the same, there would be something charming about the category of interest-free cars, were it not so universal in most people's eyes. Heaven knows even if you like the things there are plenty that soon get boring.

Happy Blue!

The drive of my house is steep and surfaced in tarmc with a general smattering of loose stones which have come loose from the tarmac.

I have had two diesel automatic Mercedes' on the drive this week, both RWD. Neither would slowly reverse up the drive without lots and lots of wheel spin and smoke from the tyres. Both flashed the traction control light, but the TC did not kick in (because in reverse)? I could get them up at speed, but as they were not my cars I didn't fancy crashing into my car or a wall.

We have had the following cars in our drive regularly since we bought the house three years ago: -

Hyundai Trajets (V6 and Diesel)
Volvo S80 2.9
Subaru Foresters Turbo and NA
Suzuki Wagon R+
Honda CR-V
plus lots and lots of run of the mill FWD cars

and none of them gave a moments cause for concern except in very icy conditions, during which time the 4x4 cars were a doddle.

What is going on?

No, seems that they aren't or the BMW equivelent. What about an Audi Quattro model. Mabey it would be easier to make the drive flatter or put a grippier surface down.

Does anyone know what the price of a VW Passat with average/high mileage is at auction?

David,

There is an ad in the autotrader (link on the left)

Just had phone call from distressed Passat owner - he has had a flat battery, replaced it, and now car idles very roughly.
(I suspect this is immediately after replacing battery and he hasn't actually driven far)

Any ideas - he had some idea of ECU's 'losing' settings and having to re-learn them, but surely the idle setting is the idle setting ?

Go on, get out of the car...

I've had the same thing. You need to reset the Throttle Body Adaptation. I used VAG-COM. The software can be downloaded for free but you need to get the cable to go with it - got mine off ebay for £25.

I have a 1997 face-lift 1.8 Mondeo TD.

I can see one hex nut on the gearbox near the bottom which is facing towards the front of the car. From here where is the othere one, the one to put oil into?

Many thanks for any help. Read more

ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond

Hi. I have a 1997 facelift Mondeo 1.8 TD.

I want to change the gearbox oil as I have a problem getting the car into 2nd gear when the car is cold.Once it has warmed up its fine.
I been told by a few people now that changing the gearbox oil might help this (if not cure it).

Could someone be as kind as to explain where the filling plug and the drain plug hex are?

I can see one recessed hex. If I am standing at the front of the car looking at the down at the engine, one recessed hex is there near the bottom of the gearbox facing the front of the car.

Can some explain in simple terms where the other is please?

Many thanks.

I have a 2001 VW Bora 1.9 SE diesel. Ever since I have had the car, in cold or damp weather the trip computer glows bright red. I can just about see the readout and is showing ok. Has any one had the same problem and as to how to fix it, as VW want to charge a small fortune to fix.
Thanks

I had the dealer do it, it was brand-new.
The problem you have is that they need to re-sync both the car keys with the master control unit when they do this (why I don't know, but apparently they had to do it), so it's really a dealer fit. Not like old cars!

My dealer would like to sell me 3 years' worth of Vehicle Replacement Insurance for a one-off payment of £199. (I'm buying a second-hand Alhambra for £13500) Any advice on this? Thanks, Jeremy Read more

Like all these things, you're buying peace of mind. Hopefully the £199 would turn out to be a 'waste' of money becasue you'll never need to claim.
You have to consider - if the car was written off, could you afford to cover the difference yourself, or would you be happy to have a cheaper car? If not, then take the insurance.

I do wonder though, as marilyn alludes, who does the arguing over the cars valuation? You could presumeably end up stuck in the middle of two insurance companies. I'd want to know up front how this situation would be resolved.

In the early hours last night our son got a call from a friend (18)
who had gone into a ditch near us. He said he was not going that fast (???) and the brakes didn't seem to work. It was on a left turn - he went straight on. Fortunately the ditches had recently been dug out and mud piled on the verges or it would have been very serious - just inches from a road sign. There were no brake/skid marks on the road, it was dry and about 4c. so not icy. The problem, as far as I could see was that he had five passengers in a small car and what looked like low tyre pressure. He had not realised that the car would drive like a pig with that load. Fortunately no one injured but a close call. I got it on the road as his dad turned up then acted as taxi.
Does anyone mention this sort of handling during tuition, even pass plus, or is it left up to parents? We know kids are going to pile into cars when a taxi costs so much.
Apparently quite a subdued lad at school today - realising he could have killed his friends - and I got a box of choccies. Read more

Not likely to lead to the car leaving the road at
moderate to low speeds though. At higher speeds, yes.

When I was 20 moderate speed was limit +10mph!!
