can someone tell me what exactly is a van, I'm thinking of getting landrover freelander commercials for my reps - would these count as commercial and so attract the £500 flat rate. also what about pick ups such as Mitsubishi's or nissan Navara's. Many Thanks

Freelander commercial is a van, so are the pickups as they can carry more than 1 ton, even though they have 5 seats. Vitos with half windows are also vans, as they too have a payload over 1 ton. Essentially, if it has more than one row of seats, then it must have a payload of over 1 ton.
The tax is changing soon, so won't be £500 anymore. Go to the inland revenue site to see the latest changes.
But don't forget non car derived vans, and vans with GW over 2 tons have lower speed limits oncertain roads. That includes double cabs.
You can ow get Kia Sorento vans, as well as Jeeps and mitsubishis.

For benefit in kind purposes:
A vehicle primarly constructed for the carriage of goods of burden is not a car.
A vehicle with a payload weight in excess of a tonne is not a car.
Freelander commercials are OK as is any single cab pick up. A double cab pick up will only qualify if they meet the payload test.
You also need to ensure that you meet the new rules coming in from 6 April 2006.

From the header 'Company CAT tax', I thought Gordon had found something else to tax!

thanks for this. it's probably worth it for me, I'm paying around £2500 per year on a saab 9-5 estate ( which I'm very happy with - the car that is , not the tax !)but the reps probably won't save that much if we get them decent diesels - honda accords come to mind.
