1999 A6 avant 1.9 tdi auto, worth it? - Japanese Elvis
Having just sold my Range Rover (3.9 classic), I'm tempted by something slightly more economical.

Have spotted a 1999 'T' reg A6 avant auto, full audi history, 130 000 miles, £4995.

Seems like a good price. Miles are high, but that doesn't scare me too much - I assume these units are good for a damn sight more than that (aren't they??)

Any model specific things to be aware of?

Is it worth 'chippping' these things?

Thanks

Sounds horribly expensive!

My mate P/Xed his A6 2.4 quattro saloon for £2k, with 83k and on a W plate in August. Ok, yours is diesel and the estate, but it's older and has more miles. I should hunt around.

But if you go for this one, check cambelt and tensioner changed at 120,000. Expecially the tensioner, speaking from bitter experince with the same engine in an Octavia.

Soem people on here have chipped this engine, try a forum search for "chip" and "Passat" or "Leon", they are the two that i can recall immediately, not sure if chipping an automatic would make a difference though?

Make sure you drive it first - the A6 Avant has a big body for the 1.9 TDI engine, and especially with an automatic box you ill find it sluggish by any standards, let alone coming from a Range Rover.

I'd suggest you try to find a 2.5 TDI if you can - it won't use much more fuel pulling that size of car around.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Might give this one a miss, it's a few too many miles away to chance a wasted journey.
