Golf 1.8T engine whiring on start-up! - perleman
My GTI iv has, since major service, started making a 'whiring' noise on starting. It doesn't do it every time. It sounds like a resonation, like a cigarette card traped in a bicicle wheel (!) and the engine has recently started making a very gentle ticking noise (about 3 ticks per second) on idle too. Does anyon have any idea what this might be? I'm hoping it's not the timing belt?

Definitely sounds belt related...

Should I stop driving it - maybe even urgently?

Or, as the car is under warrenty still, should I thrash it and hope the belt snaps giving me a free new engine (joke!!)

I can only speak from what I know about Peugeot engines but a ticking noise can mean the crankshaft pulley is about to go.

What mileage and if over 5 years old when was the cam belt changed last. Regards Peter

If the cam-belt was changed on the service it could be that the belt is too tight, which may cause this sort of noise.

Definitely could be an overtight belt. It could also be a faulty hydraulic tappet.

Are you sure the ticking isn't the purge valve on the evaporative loss emission control system (the black canister on the left of the engine bay next to the PAS resevoir)? These can make quite a loud ticking sound at idle - it certainly does on my 1.8T. Should only tick when the engine is warm and the ticking won't increase with engine revs. Just a thought...

Hi All, thanks for your help.... As regards the ticking, I'm satisfied that it is the evaporative loss valve now, as the ticking starts on idle and then goes off after a while, so not worried about that.

However the start-up whire occurs just after releasing the key. The garage couldn't reproduce the fault as it only happens now and then. I think it's the starter-motor not disengaging properly or generally faulty but is there anything I can do to get it sorted under warrenty (which has 3 months left to run) if it doesn't do it when the car's at the garage? They claim that they have to witness it to replace under warrenty, wheere do I stand - as it's been noted, will I be liable for the £200-£300 bill if it knackers after the warrenty runs out? I hope I don't have to wait till I'm broken down before it'll get fixed.
