My wife and I often eat out of an evening and living where we do it always means travelling which also means in effect driving.
I often wonder how much wine I can legaly enjoy and remain within the legal level to drive. For instance if we share a bottle of wine between us 50/50 would you think that would be ok to drive?
I don't feel over the limit at that quantity.
Any one else have a view on this? Read more
I am planning an early summer driving holiday with my wife and want to drive through the Swiss Alps, taking in the most breathtaking views possible.
The problem is I haven't got a clue which routes to take.
Any ideas as to the most scenic passes?

> SjB, where was this particular tunnel please?
It was on the first section of our onward journey to the Czech Republic when we left Interlaken, so would most likely have been between Interlaken and Altdorf.

you`ll find those wires on the filter housing are only for extreme temperature preheating.I´d follow the previous tips from these guys as the leak off pipes are a regular problem but remember dont let the diesel flow out of the supply pipe from the filter to pump if you are playing around with the filter housing and make sure the housing is full before you resealed otherwise good luck in getting it started! P.S. There are other possibilities like fitting a one way valve between filter & pump.

Alastair. Mine would be much cheaper if it were for sale as its a 94 1.4 Metro. This Legacy Estate is being sold by my son.

Just flipped through the auto express to the S-class/7-series road test. Quite startled at a couple of the photos. The interior of the Merc is almost identical in concept to the layout of the 7; also the rear three-quarter photo, the line of the boot lid on the S-class is a direct copy of the 7, with the lid 'sitting' on the back of the car. The front of the S is quite dull IMHO. Looks like its due a facelift already.

The only time I ever considered buying a BMW was ten or more years ago, when I wouldn't have minded spending a grand or so on one of those bland but ever-so-neat mid-80's 3 Series, in red or black. Preferably 6-cylinder - 320 I think it was.
Helo,..my home mechanic mate had a diesel come in which had petrol put in by accident. Not being one to waste fuel -He pumped the petrol out and mixed it with diesel ending up with 70% diesel and 30% petrol. He put it in his 730 petrol bmw and it runs sweeter than it did on petrol so i was wondering what could be a downside to doing this long term?..He is going to try with cooking oil next time>
Thanks for any replies Read more
After a diesel in the petrol tank incident I ran on a mix, probably 20-25% diesel with no trouble. It was a carburetted car so may have been more tolerant.
The steering on my C270 CDI seems to have got heavier over the last couple of months. I recently tried a friends C180 of similar miles and vintage and the steering felt much lighter and more willing to self centre. I've also driven other C Class's which seem much more nimble than mine.
I know the engine in mine is probably a heavy old lump but I've checked the fluid level, had new tyres fitted, a 4 wheel alignment at the main dealers and experimented with tyre pressures to no avail.
The dealer has checked the car over, can't find any obvious faults and says that some cars will steer heavier than others and, that a possible solution may be a new steering rack.
I'd be grateful to know if anybody has had,and rectified a similar problem as its starting to become a major issue with me. Read more
'tightness in the system' articulates the problem perfectly. Thank you for the advice - I'll try to quote you 'word for word' when I revisit the dealer next week.
Still looking into the possibility of getting a Pre-Reg 'new' car and had almost got my head round the legalities of the matter when a new question sprung up that I can't seem to get a straight answer on:
I have a private registration plate that I want to transfer onto the 'new' vehicle straight away - so its on there when I receive delivery - no problem with a new car right? The question seems to arise though as to whether this is possible with a 'Pre-Registered' vehicle that the Dealer/Supplier still retain the V5 form on for 6 months.
Does anyone know the answer on this one, if its Pre Reg and im not going to get the V5 for 6 months can I still have my reg transfered onto it from the start? (one firm think I cant have it and one firm thinks they can do it, from the ones I've tried so far!)
Regards.

As mentioned above, I believe the car must remain registered to
the first 'owner' for 6 months to qualify for the fleet
discount.
Yes part of the terms of sale to the fleet is that they own it for a certain period of time ie. 3 or 6 months. Companies that re-register the vehicle a few days after the initial registration risk losing their terms if caught. However most manufacturers turn a blind eye as they know what is happening.
I paid £12 TWELVE QUID for the slender pleasure of parking at Knutsford Services. I assume the same rate applies at all Moto places.
You have been warned.

TVM,"full of local workers saving town centre parking charges.", was an analogy, applied to a hospital car park. The hospital charges to stop people parking there and then bussing it (very good local service) the remaining 3 miles to town.
i dont know if there has been discussions on the fuel economy of biodiesel but i was was wondering if anyone had any figures? my car currently get on average 42-45 mpg. would this change much with biodeisel? also is there any modifications to the car atall? theres a garage near me thats just started selling it at the pump so would it go straight in?

I quite frequently use the 5% stuff from Sainsbury's, and, while I haven't done any scientific studies, it *appears* to produce better MPG in my Merc C270CDi. Driven in exactly the same way (steady speeds on long motorway runs) it will repeatably nudge 50MPG with Sainsbury's 5% biodiesel, rather than around 45MPG with Mobil / Esso / Shell.
I did also get 50MPG from a tankful of Asda diesel bought in Bristol, but I don't know if that was bio or not. However the credit card operated pumps there confused me and put 7p (thank goodness I noticed immediately) of unleaded petrol in first!

With the drink-driving law as it is, one receives a mandatory one year disqualification if one is over the 80mg limit, yet if one is just under the limit one is completely in the clear.
I wouldn't change the penalty for exceeding the 80mg limit but I'd add a lower offence threshold of 40mg/100ml, with 3 penalty points and a fine.
The current situation is akin to if the motorway speed limit was, say, 120mph but doing 121 mph would earn a one year disqualification
