We have a Corsa 1.0 Club (52) - is it worth maintaining a full dealer service history for the car or will we not gain the benefit when selling? Read more
I've noticed noise on steering either direction in my 1998 mondeo. It has power steering but never had a car with this before. The noise seems to increase with increasing revs but not when car in a straight line if you see what I mean. Any ideas what I should look for, I assume it could be power steering pump, is there anything else more simple I should check?

Just to update. Car fixed - £90 all in, seems reasonable to me: I was expecting much worse.
I've got a Renault Clio 1.5dci (2002) that needs a replacement engine. I've found some bad reports about some firm in deleted ## and it seems best to avoid them. I've had a very good offer to do the job and a new, not used, engine from a firm of specialist renault breakers in Accrington. Anybody got any good or bad stories about them?
{## Although you've not mentioned the companies name; giving the area they're based in doesn't take a lot of working out as to who you're refering to - hence the deletion as per the forum no name/shame policy. DD}

I know Specialist Breakers very well ,they have a huge stock of NEW and USED parts both with warranty, there are also 3 Renault trained mechanics, and a time served engineer reconditioning gear boxs .They have done all the services and repairs to my car for the last three years .
I bought a warranty for my car to take over from where the manufacturer's one ran out. The items covered were pretty comprehensive and the price reasonable.
It was only later, on studying the policy document in fine detail, that I came across the statement (in small print and buried quite a few pages in) to the effect that the car had to be serviced every 6,000 miles or six months, whichever came first. As the manufacturers recommended interval is 10,000 miles the warranty is in effect useless.
Be warned. Read more
I'd get in writing from them that the manufacturer's service intervals are ok and that it won't affect a claim in any way.

I have been offered a Volvo S40 02 reg which has had a side impact and needs a new drivers door and some tin bashing to the front wing and rear quarter. Nothing heavy .
What concerns me though is that the curtain airbag(s) in the roof (drivers side)have gone off and are hanging down. I have seen front bags replaced but Volvo quote £500 to buy a new roof one and maybe £1000 for the sensors plus £200 labour. All of which would make the car not worth the effort.
2 questions then, please ;_
1. Is there a cheaper way to replace the bag
2. I know its not ideal but what would happen if this bag was not replaced - the s40 managed for many years without the roof one. Would the management system go into shut down mode or just show a warning light on the dashboard ?
Seems a shame for a good car to be binned off.
Thanks for any inspired comments.

On the subject of Volvo airbags (though doubtless applies more widely) I came across the following Volvo Service Bulletin for older models that surprised me:

To my motoring requirements, a near perfect combination of performance, economy, comfort, equipment and reliability is achieved by the Honda Accord. But the diesel has no auto option and I would never go back to changing gears myself.
Anyone know why no auto is offered ? Is there an auto option on this model for the Japan market ? Read more
When Honda first announced a few years ago that they were working on a diesel powered Accord I distinctly remember reading about a test model which was hooked up to a five speed automatic transmission.
I also remember the author of the article praising the engine/gearbox combination.
Mediocre request. I have got the job of doing the front discs and pads for a mate, and have lost the manual. Anyone confirm the tightening torques for the caliper bolts. Any special tools required (eg for the disc retaining bolt).
are the caliper slides prone to sieze on this model?

Thank you
All information very useful, and knowing the allen key sizes before you start, and not halfway through, very useful
I know at some point a mod is going to have to move this but I'm putting it here so it gets the recognition it deserves.

I'm not a fan of SMS, preferring to actually talk to someone rather than have a drawn out clickety-click to-and-fro with them, but I was pleased with the service from my local Peugeot garage: Having just booked in SWMBO's 306 Sedan over the telephone (first new exhaust back box after 11 years from new; rest of the system still fine!), a few minutes later I received an automated SMS confirming the date and time. Simple but effective, and I now know that I am expected. If I'm not, then I have the SMS to show that I should be! Read more
Yes, probably.

It's worth keeping all the receipts whether it's dealer serviced or diy. Proves that the car has been looked after and is more persuasive than just stamps in the book. Same with old MOT certificates too.
