I bought a warranty for my car to take over from where the manufacturer's one ran out. The items covered were pretty comprehensive and the price reasonable.

It was only later, on studying the policy document in fine detail, that I came across the statement (in small print and buried quite a few pages in) to the effect that the car had to be serviced every 6,000 miles or six months, whichever came first. As the manufacturers recommended interval is 10,000 miles the warranty is in effect useless.

Sounds familiar - just like the policy I've got. Probably not able to name names here (more than happy to do so if anyone asks). In my policy, under service standards section (page 8 of the handbook), I'll quote :

" The vehicle must be serviced by a VAT registered garage, six months or 6000 miles (whichever is sooner) from the date of or mileage at purchase and thereafter at intervals at six months or 6,000 miles (whichever is the sooner) and must consuist of ..."

Then follows a list of things that must be done at a service

Now what really confuses me is the paragraph below on the same page

"As an option the vehicle may be serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommnended service schedule by a VAT registered garage"

There then follows some more info about retaining proof of service etc and a dire warning that the warranty is void if you don't comply.

So do I service mine every 6K (as option 1 ) or as every 12K ( as per Volvo service schedule) ? I've queried this several times on the phone and have been told that the manufactuers service interval is OK to use. I'll believe that when I try and claim for anything!

I'd get in writing from them that the manufacturer's service intervals are ok and that it won't affect a claim in any way.
