Reading the recurring threads on this site - there is ANOTHER one on the perennial problem of fog lights, leads me to the conclusion that we need a new police force.

This force would deal with things like:-

Fog lights on at inappropriate times.
Drivers using hand-held mobile phones.
Cars with tinted windows.
Cars parking on the pavement.

And so on and so on. this new police force would free up the bobby for REAL crime.

We would need a new Chief Constable and as I thought of the idea, I am prepared to consider accepting the office. A few things need to be sorted out - my uniform for one - perhaps I will ask the Italian Caribinieri for something that they discarded as being a little too flash for them.

My side arms are another matter - my force will be armed to the teeth and I will have the power of summary execution.

I can just see it working, can't you? Read more

Driving over painted chevrons (if thats how its spelt)

its sooooo anyoning when people do that!!!

Why?If I am wanting to turn right why do I need to contribute to the queue of traffic when there is a perfectly usable piece of road next to me that some traffic'planner'decided needed to be covered in paint.Too much of the stuff on the roads IMO.

Mondeoowner

This petrol Mondeo has an automatic gearbox. Due to persistent pinking not cured by various attempts by DIY, main dealer and independent (fuel filter, vacuum leak checks, new air mass meter, new EGR valve, new ECU! etc) the next step is going to be to check the timing. However Ford have said that they no longer sell tools and the manufacturers approached so far do not supply one for locking the crankshaft in position on the Zetec engine. Does anybody know where this tool can be sourced?

I've remembered that the ignition advance/retard link (mentioned by jc above) is positioned near to the power steering reservoir just hanging out of the loom running across the bulkead. With the (shorting) link in the timing is set for higher octanes (UK) so without it the timing is retarded for lower octanes.
The link in my Mondeo was not fitted, so I have bridged the contacts with a wire link but can not really detect any change in performance, pinking etc.

I'm looking at getting an older model Fiat Punto but can't understand the difference between all the model numbers. I'm looking in particular at the "60" and "75" as from what I have figured they are the one's which have a 1.2 engine. I am also looking at the SX where possible as it has electric windows and central locking but I can't figure out which has or whether either of them have power steering. Does any one know which models have it etc? I know for a fact the "85" does but I'm at a loss as to what the lower model numbers have.

Thanks for all your help Read more

Sorry, should have said 60, 75 & 85.

55 was 1108cc, the 1.2's were 1242cc.

www.ford.co.uk/ tells you where you can find a Ford dealer, and gives details of each dealer's facilities.

Whilst checking over the front tyres I am about to replace, I noticed the following.

The passenger-side front has worn right down on the inside edge and is similar on the outside edge.

On the drivers side it is similar, but no where near as bad.

Is this a tracking issue?

I was hoping to have new tyres fitted tommorow by a company that visit and replace the tyres and then it is booked in for a service with a main dealer on Friday.

Is it OK to get the tyres done and let the dealer sort out the problem or am I better leaving the tyres on for the time being so they can see the damage and then have them rectify it and then get the tyres replaced?

Any advice appreciated! Read more

I am pretty sure the coil I fitted to the Laguna has gone again this morning - swmbo started the car, went to turn it around, got halfway across the road and it stopped and would not restart. I popped the bonnet and when she was turning it over ther were visable sparks and clicking coming from the coil pack - hence why I am sure this is the problem. I am currently in a BIG discussion with the dealer who supplied the part and Reanult UK as they want the whole car recovered to them to change the part, I am only willing to take the coil to them (that is what I purchased after all) Just checking that my diagnosis is correct before I make a complete idiot of myself. ;o) Read more

Update - After the whole day yesterday spent "discussing" Renaults returns policy with them I finally got them to supply my with a replacement coil today - fitted it and car fired first time. Renault have a policy where if you buy a part from them and it fails you have to take the whole car - not just the failed part - to them to be "Verified". See discussion thread for more on this!!!!

Where does one find coefficient of drag statistics? I've googled, but have not succeeded in finding any site which lists these statistics - and most manufacturers seem to be pretty coy as well. Read more

I had a 1983 1.3 Maestro and 2 MG Montegos.

NOe ever let me down even though the first MG Monetego was a 1984 model with the digital dashboard and voice synth. It told a few porkies but never broke down.

I have re-located to France and have taken my caravan with me.
This caravan was manufactured in France, exported to UK and is now back in France.
The problem is I now have to register it and its a nightmare, therefore is there anyone out there who has had this problem and could they pass on to me any helpful info.

It can be done, even for a UK-built caravan, but you will need the co-operation of the manufacturer to provide additional details, wherever it was built.

Check out Caravan Talk 2 forum and do a search, I don't have a link I'm afraid.
