Is my 1999 P11 (not later P11-144 version) Primera galvanised? If so, what parts of the car? Read more

Aprilia

P11 is not galvanised as far as I know. Its not often you see a rusty one though (unless its been accident repair). The older P10 used to rot in the back of the sill, but still not bad overall.

K11 Micras can rust in the front crossmember and in the sills and rear chassis members. A lot depends on how/where they have been kept.

I bought a car radio from eBay, it came from Germany (though I bought from a UK buyer). It has two years manufacturers warranty.

I thought I had a problem with the radio when I fitted it, so mailed the seller. His response has just come through. It said

"Did you have the car radio installed by an auto electrician? If yes, please send us a scan of the invoice you received from the auto electrician. We need to have a written confirmation, that the radio turned up faulty after professional installation. Let me note that there are safety security screws that must be removed and that a professional installation is a must to keep warranty valid."

Surely that can't be right? Read more

Made the thread rather short though, would have been interesting to hear other oppinions!

I'm that close, that close I tell you, to buying a Legacy. Decent price offered, I don't think they'll go any lower so apart from a set of mats(!) and perhaps a full tank, is there anything else I can try and squeeze out of the deal? It's an approved used car so warranty is already sorted and I'm paying cash so a better finance rate isn't relevant. Read more

Secretary-to-the-Boss

Hi - the Boss has got a 2006 VW Passat with the factory fit phone kit.

We were told this was NOT bluetooth, but have now been told the phone and the car need to pair (ala Bluetooth) for the kit to work, but "something" on the car is preventing this; and VW have said if after next attempt to rectify it still doesn't work they will pay for an aftermarket kit.

Anyone else come across this? Any solutions? Although the offer seems to be genuine if we wanted an aftermarket kit, we wouldn't have ordered the £250 + £85 cradle VW one!

Taken from the options list for the new Passat, looks like it's probably a comptability problem. Do you know what phone the "boss" has?

Do any BR's know of any sites that sell Honda Parts online. I have tried Google but come up with nothing. Only thing it did throw up kept giving me breakers yards - even if you put in new parts!!! Read more

There is somewhere...
Over years I have dealt happily with Norton Way Honda at Letchworth, who not only supply genuine Honda parts at a discount as well but organise prompt delivery.
Email: will.lewis@chiswickhonda.com and let him know what you are looking for.

Hi,

I'm trying to buy some mouldings (rail covers) for my astra 52 reg.

I'm trying to find a cheaper price, as all apart from one dealer quoted the same price.

Is there any other companies I should be calling? e..g Parkers?

Salvage and scrap yards dont have the part otherwise I would have gone to them.

Thanks Read more

I rang Autovaux, they quoted me 90p more :>

Car now at Merc dealer for fixing, but out of interest; a good friend was bowling along on the motorway at night in his (2000 or 2001 I think) C320 Estate when it suffered total electrical failure. Headlights, instrumentation, radio, engine - the lot - without warning save for a helpful "STOP!" caption in the instrument cluster. I would normally say "Earth" for something like this, but unless the instrument cluster has a backup battery, this appears unlikely to be the cause.

Ideas?
Nothing apparently relevant in the CBCB.

As I say, the car's at a Merc dealer who couldn't fix it immediately, but it's got me interested. Read more

Hi All,

Thanks for the interest in my car. With regard to the lack of warning signs (ie dimming lights) I suspect that may be a result of the car having Xenon lights which I think are either on or off and will not function if the voltage drops. I might be wrong but its all I could think of. I also had the satnav on, heated seats on, stereo on high and was travelling 'with pace!' perhaps it was just too much on a unit that was on its way out anyway.

Anyway, the car is being replaced this weekend by a new V6 E320CDi, lets hope that proves to be trouble free.

PS The guesses on the breakdown of the bill from MB were spot on.

Question Passat Service
Wally Zebon

My 2001 Passat is telling me it needs a service. Its done 55K miles.
If I did it myself, what would be involved?

I suppose I should have read the service book first, but I'll go and get it now.

Thanks for the info

I'm toying with the idea of changing my car yet again. I like fast cars, but a new house means that I have to be a bit more frugal with the fuel expenses. So.....

Is there such a thing as a car that has good fuel economy and great performance.

By good fuel economy I mean over 40mpg on a run and 30ish around town.
By great performance I mean at least 150BHP

Other considerations to consider are - it must cost around 6K, have 5 doors and be "family sized" (Mondeo/Passat size)

I'm thinking diesel, but which one? Read more

Malcolm_L

Alfa 156 JTD diesels come within your budget and performance criteria at 150bhp (later models do have 175bhp but these won't be available at £6k unless they've got starship mileage).

Sportwagon is worth a look as it's more style than function but definitely more practical than the saloon.

Nice car to drive (had a 156 JTS for a week and ran out of rational excuses to go somewhere!)
If you're a keen driver, you may struggle to get the 30/40mpg figures you want? Skoda Octavia with a chip might be your best option if you don't mind the peaky power delivery.
