Hi all

My Laguna, has devloped a really annoying fault werebuy the "SERV" light and the ABS light will come on together (how its meant to) at intermitanly, or will not go out on startup, or it will be absolutly fine for a ciple of days, it may then just flash on for a coplue of senconds, or stay on for a couple of days.

Its been back to the Garage , now three times, where when i get back it will be fine for a couple of days, and then play up again.

They have replaced a sensor, reset the ECU, thankfully its not costing me anything, until the warranty runs out, annoyingly its always fine, when i take it to the garage.

The garage is a independat garage who i trust completly as i have bought a few cars from, they took it to a specialist today, who again reset the ECU, went to pick it up , drove out the doors ......SERV and ABS Light came on, so i reversed it back in.

Can anyone cast any light on this, its soo frustrating

Thanks in advance

I have a Renault 2001 Clio Dynamique 1.5 DCi. Very economical car with a decent engine. The only frustrating aspect of the car is the continuing problems with the headlights. The Renault dealer where it it was purchased from fixed the problem on the Offside but the nearside is now causing problems.

Tonight the nearside failed again. I purchased a new bulb and had to get the dealer to fit it as I just could not get my hands in the space given to replace it. The dealer said the bumer had to be removed etc and it cost me £97 labour etc + £11 for bulb, Not good.

Am now wanting to get to the bottom of the problem. Does anyone have a similar problem? Has anyone had problems with the dealers as well.
I am not going to buy another Renault due to this problem.

Any views would be appreciated.

Headlamp bulbs are rated at 13.75V at the lamp terminals (Philips lighting catalogue). The setting of 14.2V at the battery allows for voltage drops in the switching and cabling.

The relationship between lamp voltage and life is very non-linear; something like a 10% overvoltage will halve the life.

Had quote of £90 from Mazda MD, this really does sound massively high. Or is it????

I used to pay £35 at Rapid Fit on my Mondeo, what's everyone else paying?

£180 for an oil service for a BMW 330D. Of course I don't actually take my car to a main dealer for an oil change, I only asked out of curiosity.

Seen on a particularly mucky local van 'Cleaner than a ward at RD & E' (our local hospital). A sign on the back of a courier lorry had a big picture of a baby with the slogan 'We can deliver anything except these' or something similar! Finally a quote on the side of another courier van which I quote frequently , 'A promise is nothing unless it is delivered' - very true to life I think.

Hello everyone!

Well, I now have my shiny new Honda Civic, I'm completely over the moon with it, and I'm wondering, if there's anything I should be doing to keep it corrosion free, etc.?

I went for a paint sealant option at the dealership. Some people will probably argue that it was an expensive option, but I shopped around, compared it with prices that other valeters were offering and I deemed it to be a competitive price, so I went for it. They sealed the exterior paint and the vinyl and carpet surfaces inside the car before I took delivery. I honestly can't tell if it's made a difference, but I do notice that the rain goes up into beads nicely, so I'm assuming it's doing its job.

Is there anything else that I should be doing, while it's still reasonably clean and rust free? Any protection that I should apply in the engine bay? Such as applying vasoline on battery contacts or WD40 in the engine bay (and if so, I've absolutely no idea where, or if this would actually harm electrics)...

Also, are products that claim to keep windows free of moisture worth applying, or are they just gimmicks?

There's one thing I already noticed today, which was pretty much the first time I saw the car in daylight since collecting it from the dealership, and that is that the brake discs visible through the alloys are quite rusty. Is that just because they've never been used and will it be cleared off by the friction of the brakes as they get used? I've never really had a car before with brake discs are quite so visible through the alloys, so if an amount of rust is normal, even when new, then I guess that's fine.

I've been using Rainex for the last 10 years. I
put plenty of it on all glass surfaces including the windscreen
and I've never had a problem. I rarely use wipers
on continual cycle now and at higher speeds wipers are unnecessary.

I'm impressed with how it works on side windows and door mirrors. But I tried it on my windscreen and when I had to use the wipers, they juddered noisily and jumped across the screen.
I used the new pre-soaked wipes, so these might be a different formulation to the original "apply from the bottle" stuff.

My wiper blades are fairly new so they're not the problem. It was so bad I had to wipe the screen with meths to try and remove the Rain-X.
I'll have to try the bottle stuff myself...

On my travels recently I have seen a growing disregard for number plates in general, for instance, I have seen an increasing number of cars with a blackish/silverish blob (not dirt) running thro the number. Also on 2 occassions on the Cardiff stretch of the M4, I have seen an American stretched limo with NO discernable number plate at all, who are these people ? Are they above the law ?

I heard Vauxhall have updated it for the 55 year models, but is it available for the 54's? Read more

the new software is installed. Makes a real difference too.

What exactly has the software altered?
What was the problem with the indicators that a software update was needed?

My brother in law who is currently staying with me turns 70 in November and will need to renew his UK driving licence.

As he normally lives abroad and very rarely returns to UK he wants to try and renew the licence before returning to his sailing boat in a couple of weeks and sailing off into the sunset.

The DVLA site says they send out the forms automatically three months in advance.

Before attemting to ring them , do any of our older backroomers know or have experience of whether renewal can be brought forward and if so how long it takes ? Read more

Roger:

Interesting to note your Spanish registered licence authorising you to dive (only in Spain, until Feb 2006). I guess such an activity would be pretty chilly elsewhere anyway at that time of year.

I fear the Philippines has one more of thousands of hangovers from its one-time Spanish masters. Renewing our licences takes not only a morning or more standing in line, but results only in a piece of paper also. This has to be stamped every month (more standing in line) and it can be a year or more before you get the genuine thing, which is only valid for 3 years anyway. This process usually also involves the sudden discovery of "uncleared" traffic tickets going way back, which are invariably fake but nonetheless require "clearing" before licence renewal can be considered.

If you live in Manila you can get it in a week though and if you need it quicker talk to me and my police chief friend will get it in a morning for 300 quid for you. This process is worthy of a Letter from the Colonies and indeed I have had a draft on the stocks for some time recounting my last effort.

Friends I know just put up with being stopped for "misdemeanours" 3 times a week just because they are foreigners (for which read must be rich) and buy their way out of not having a licence. They reckon it's cheaper in terms of time and effort!

Really I don't think you chaps in UK have as much to whinge about as you think......
