We have a Corsa 1.0 Club (52) - is it worth maintaining a full dealer service history for the car or will we not gain the benefit when selling?

Just my opinion but i believe cars with a dealer service history are far easier to sell and usually more expensive than non dealer. But if you are not worried about selling on and have a good local mechanic i would rather give them my money and they may be more thankful as well?

IMO the answer depends on how long you intend to keep the car and what the value of the car would be at the time of resale.

If you're going to keep it for a few years and the value at re-sale is relatively low then it maybe worthwhile to use a local (& hopefully trusted) mechanic and save on the servoce costs.

However if you're selling in the next few months and car is worth several £k then it may be worthwhile keeping up the FDSH just to make it easier to sell on.... though I don't think it would add to the value of a Corsa.

If the car is to be sold within 2/3 years and especially if it is a Premium Brand then a FSH with the Franchise stamps is sensible.

If on the otherhand you intend to keep the car for 7/8 years the overall condition of the car and a FSH @ independents won't make any difference.

I have 2 cars - Mazda with 2 Franchise stamps and 5 Independent, Honda with 2 Franchise and 3 independent - Although they cost £15K each they are now worth <£5000 for the pair - All Mazda or All Honda stamps would not make any difference to their value as the dealer said whne valuing one of them the other week - he would just trade/auction them.

I sold my two and a half year old Picasso in December last year. It's first service was at the main dealers and the next 3 I had carried out by a good local independent. A warranty job and a recall were carried out by the main dealer. I only had 2 people come round to look at it but both acknowledged that an independent was as good as main dealer and the guy who bought it saw it as a positive not a negative.

Thanks for the feedback - we are likely to keep it for at least another two years and it is worth 3-4k now so looks like I am doing it myself from here.

Spend a thousand pounds more on servicing in the hope that you get an extra five hundred at trade-in time? I'll bet you get book price when you trade-in, it's the dealer that gets the benefit of a full service history.

If you´re confident doing the services yourself, surely that´s decision made. It might be worth being a bit anal about keeping every scrap of receipts to prove to a prospective buyer 3-4-5 years doen the line that yes, you have actually done all the work the service schedule requires...

It's worth keeping all the receipts whether it's dealer serviced or diy. Proves that the car has been looked after and is more persuasive than just stamps in the book. Same with old MOT certificates too.
