Still looking into the possibility of getting a Pre-Reg 'new' car and had almost got my head round the legalities of the matter when a new question sprung up that I can't seem to get a straight answer on:
I have a private registration plate that I want to transfer onto the 'new' vehicle straight away - so its on there when I receive delivery - no problem with a new car right? The question seems to arise though as to whether this is possible with a 'Pre-Registered' vehicle that the Dealer/Supplier still retain the V5 form on for 6 months.
Does anyone know the answer on this one, if its Pre Reg and im not going to get the V5 for 6 months can I still have my reg transfered onto it from the start? (one firm think I cant have it and one firm thinks they can do it, from the ones I've tried so far!)
Regards.

Technically yes.
Have you thought of the consequences as the plate will be in the name of a third party(the company) if they bubble before they hand over the logbook technically you could lose your right to the plate?
just a thought?
Is your plate worth more than the hassle it could involve?

Why six months to get the v5?

Why six months to get the v5?
This seems to be the 'catch' on most Pre-Reg car deals, in that the supplier or dealer registers a fleet of cars in their name in order to get a bulk discount. They then register the customer as the owner but they have to remain as the registered keeper for 6 months until they are legally allowed to seel/trade the car at which point the customer becomes the registered keeper and gets the v5 with their name now on it. At least thats how I think it works?

I have heard of this sort of thing being done with 'pre-reg', but always thought it a bit dodgy. There could be insurance implications for example (I have been asked 'are you the registered keeper' when getting a quote).

My car was a pre-reg'd Focus ST170 bought from a Ford main dealer. It was pre-red'd in late November and I bought the car in early January (not this year, last year). The log book was sent off straight away and I received it a couple of weeks later. No six month rule applied in my case.

WHY NOT GET THEM TO PAY FOR THE PLATE TO BE ON A RETAINER...
then your neighbours get to see the new reg number..and in 6mths time..u can put the plate onto your car,,,,
that is what i did... :)

I have the same concerns as 'pubfootie' about an order I have just placed with a car broker and it worries me. The broker is a well established company (and one Honestjohn mentions regularly). When the pre-order came through and I paid my £1000 deposit, I am actually dealing with one of their contacts/brokers. This is who I will deal with for the pre-registered new UK car. They say this is quite normal.
The questions I have are: They say the car is pre-registered to one of their sister companies. How do you prove the car is actually yours when you pay the balance (other than your receipt - what if the broker has it on Finance and someone comes knocking on my door 3 months later?). They talk about 'good title' but does this protect me when I give them my £16000?!! Is the car 'actually' mine?
I know the log book is not proof of ownership, but they say that to stop motor traders from buying and then selling on, they hold the log book for 6 months before releasing. What does really mean to me (car insurance for instance?)
Any help would be appreciated - Thanks

If holding on to the log book prevents a trader from selling on, would it prevent you too? And why would the want to prevent this anyway? If they sell something, surely it is the purchaser's to do with what they will?
As mentioned above, I believe the car must remain registered to the first 'owner' for 6 months to qualify for the fleet discount.

Yes part of the terms of sale to the fleet is that they own it for a certain period of time ie. 3 or 6 months. Companies that re-register the vehicle a few days after the initial registration risk losing their terms if caught. However most manufacturers turn a blind eye as they know what is happening.
