Motorists hit by fourth month of fuel price rises 5 Jul 2016 (News)
Motorists are paying almost £6 more for a tank of fuel than they were in March, according to a new study from the RAC. RAC Fuel Watch shows that unleaded has increased by 10p-per-litre from 101.9p at the start of March to 112.1p at the end of June, while diesel has jumped by 11p over the same period, from 101.5p to 112.3p. "June was another bad month for motorists with the price of petrol going up again," said RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams. -

Rising global oil prices have been blamed for the price hike, with the cost of a barrel of oil increasing by 25 per cent in April. Supermarket prices rose by 3p-per-litre for both fuels, with petrol rising from 102.6p to 105.8p and diesel from 102.5p to 105.7p. Drivers being “plundered” at the pumps, according to the AA 20 Apr 2015 (News)
The AA has accused fuel retailers of “plundering” motorists by pushing up fuel costs at the pumps at a time when oil prices dropped. Motorists who are considering buying a car - but are worried about whether they will be able to afford the running costs - may agree something should be done to stabilise the price of petrol and diesel. The Association of British Drivers has suggested the government should adopt a flexible approach to fuel duty. It explained that when the price of oil is high, the country's leaders could keep the cost of petrol and diesel relatively constant by reducing its statutory charges. -

The cost of diesel in June 2014 was, on average, 136.1 pence-per-litre. The latest fuel price reductions mean the cost of filling a 40-litre diesel tank is around £9 lower today than it was in June 2014. Additionally diesel is currently cheaper than petrol at most supermarkets for the first time in several years.
