  • Toyota Avensis (1997 - 2002) - 01 2.0 Faulty Tail Light 3 Oct 2010 (Forum)
(Besides both would be out if the fuse had gone. All the other lights on the rear near side cluster (fog/reverse/brake/indicator) are working just the tail light that isn't. I then removed the light cluster and plugged it into the off side and the tail light did work, proving that the bulb and light cluster is working.
  • Volkswagen Polo III - Knocking noise coming from forwards driver side 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Recently my car has started making a knocking noise, this happens when I am not accelerating or braking, but when I am resting my foot on the accelerator and going a steady speed. The noise will occur when going straight or around a slight turn, but since I know the bearings typically make a wurring noise to indicate that they are worn I don't think it is them.
  • citroen xsara estate v reg - 2.0hdi cutting out 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Engine management light has only stayed on with car running once- had codes read, came back as 0340- cam/crank shaft synchro problem- have changed both sensors, also changed the brake light switch. Absolutely no difference. Any one any ideas as to what else to check/replace? Any one know what would cause the em light to stay out and so stop the engine from starting?
  • a friend bought a rusty car 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Ten months ago a work colleague bought a 50k mile Ford Ka on a p plate from a garage. This week it failed its mot on serious rust and condition of brakes. She wants to pay for repairs but I and a few others have said just walk away its not worth it. Its had a full Ford service history and the garage owner claimed he had a good look over the car before he sold it to her.
  • Rover 75 2.0 CDT servicing 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Is it just a case of checking levels and tyre pressures? With older family cars I normally manage the routine oil /filter/ brake pad changes myself but the handbook gives no clue to what is required and, surprisingly, there seems to be no Haynes manual published for this car. The car seems to performing faultlessly and I am loathe to spend needless money for the dealer ( I think about £250) just to oil the hinges.
  • Speed Camera Thread - Volume 49 [Read Only] 18 Oct 2009 (Forum)
In fact, I think the use of a covert camera would more accurately reflect the negative attitude to speed limits by drivers. When approaching overt cameras, all that happens is that speeding drivers brake on approach, then speed up again after. Hence, out of 1000 cars passing, a small proportion get caught (through day dreaming one suspects) With a covert camera, how many out of 1000 drivers do you think would get caught?
  • Back from LeMans 18 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I was astonished also by how quiet the diesel cars were, and to be honest, they were not so exciting to behold. I enjoyed standng at the bottom of the Mulsanne straight where they braked hard for the sharp r/h bend but still managed to overtake slower mortals within a fag paper distance of the bend. I never want to see a Merguez sausage again! There wasn't much in the way of eye candy, and I think the ladies would feel the same way.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - Performance Mods? 7 Apr 2009 (Forum)
So i've been considering a few options - and would like some feedback... 1) K&N induction kit (supposed 4-5bhp), performance brakes etc. Easy & Cheap ish - but not dramatic even if I get 5bhp. Do they work? 2) Can you put a 16v head & MP injection on an 8v? How would you find out if you could? What else would you need asside from the ECU & intake manifold....
  • Mitsubishi L200 pickups (2000 - 2006) - Type Approval - help needed 21 Feb 2009 (Forum)
DVLA want evidence of ?Type Approval?. Mitsubishi in Ireland can supply me with Type Approval numbers for Emissions, Brakes and Noise, but not one number for the whole vehicle. After a lot of back and forth the local DVLA office are now saying I need to take it for an SVA test and, because it was not me who lived and used it in Ireland, some curt woman at VOSA says it has to have an SVA [enhanced] at the cost of £190.
  • Choice modifications to a Ford Focus. 9 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Ideas: Wheels & tyres- Upgrade to 16'' from 15'' buying used set on eBay (Ford parts). Tyres need replacing anyway as they are all original. Brakes- Order good quality discs & pads on net, garage to fit. Only drums on rear, replace if need be. Suspension- Upgrade springs & dampers? Too expensive/worth the bother? Advice please. Any other tips on how to get this car back to its best, it has been sitting around for years doing nothing but short runs.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.8 - Undriven for 3 Months 21 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Good practice would have been to take this car out at least once a week to at keep things ticking over and lubricated I've already been told that the battery is flat which may necessiate a new one - I'm ready for that. However, my concerns are more around whether the brakes/gears/wheel bearings or something worse may have seized up. I've no mechanical expertise so wonder whether it's worth paying for a full RAC vehicle check. I'll be test driving the car on Saturday so If everything sounds and appears normal maybe a check isn't necessary?
  • Bosch Service Centres - any experience or views ? 30 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I can get over this though if I am convinced he will do a good job. I walked past a brand new Avensis the other day and looked at its wheels and noticed Bosch brake pads fitted from new. I do have a Bosch Service Centre conveniently up the road from work and wondered if anyone has any experience of using them. I would be grateful for any feedback or views of Bosch Service Centres.

But driving this really scared the carp out of me and i was pretty bad at it to start but got better as i went on, kirbed it a few times, wrong gears, not braking hard enough etc etc. so now i dont really want to do that course, and i only want to drive a 7500kg vehicle. • Rubberneckers - what to do? 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I think it is time people slowing to look at accidents were prosecuted, or that the police invested in proper screening for central reservation barriers, or to be erected around the vehicles involved to prevent onlookers from seeing anything. 2 hours of traffic for an obstruction in the road / accident / safety related matter) is annoying but understandable. 2 hours of traffic purely so a handful of idiots can get an eyeful is inexcusable, and to make matters worse, I saw three near misses as people drove along staring intently to their right while the car in front braked! Rig up a CCTV camera and charge anyone seen turning their heads towards the accident scene with driving without due care and attention, and causing an obstruction! Discuss. Cheers DP (Sorry for ranting!
  • Honda Civic UK (2006 - ) - Honda Civic Aerodeck. Whats the knocking 25 Aug 2007 (Forum)
On pulling hard left (reversing or turning corners) I get a knocking which resonates through my steering wheel. I also seem to get a vibrating when braking from high speeds ( I initially thought this was just the ABS). I recently had the car serviced and when they were doing the test drive the mechanic commented that he thought my drive shaft was in need of repair.
  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - 2.2dT head gasket 24 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The real issue with engine removal just for the head gasket is that so many other systems have to be compromised. The radiator, Aircon, Brakes, gearbox, suspension, running gear etc. If I have to do it this way I will, but I would be grateful for any input the memebers of the forum could make. Thanks mikellfr
  • Pathetic Passat gets the Push 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
But an average of nearly £120 a month on repairs and servicing tells its own story about the difference between a car that looks high quality and a car that is high quality - I've had two rear door latch failures, a failed air mass sensor, new front brakes, new front suspension arm, and numerous untraceable rattles. And a new cambelt. What next? It's got to go. But what do I replace it with? I need something that matches its carrying capacity, economy, comfort.
  • Ropey Toyota 11 May 2007 (Forum)
I bought my 2004 Toyota Avensis around 18 months ago when it had 14k miles on it, now it has 24k miles and has spent 13 days in the dealership dealing with the following (sometimes reoccuring faults) - failed headlight units (both replaced) - leaking door seal - faulty windscreen seal (3 times) - various problems with the brakes (noises, 'grabbing' etc) - steering recall - failed clutch unit (new clutch fitted) - failed oxygen sensor - failed yaw sensor What is more worrying is that last 3 items - surely not good for such a low mileage (and young) car.
