  • C.Saxo.1.1i S Reg. - Vibration/noise when power is lifted in 3/4/5 gear 18 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I have recently forked out £340 for a service that turned into a full change of the back brakes, £40 odd for the Emobiliser receiver (the light stayed on), then another 50 odd for a new tyre. bought the car for about £800 about 3 months ago, (one lady owner). I expected to put out around £500 in the first year of owning it but that figure seems to be rapidly approaching.
  • Nissan Almera - Looking for buying advice on a 2004 Nissan Almera. 17 Sep 2010 (Forum)
My motoring knowledge amounts to checking for even tyre wear and having a look at the brake discs (don’t even know how to check pads) therefore I’d be grateful for some opinions on whether the service history between 15,000 & 40,000 miles is absolutely necessary.   I know that these engines are chain driven, and that clean oil is essential for a long life, so I am slightly weary.
  • Ford C-MAX - 3yr service due - main dealer, indy or diy? 20 Feb 2010 (Forum)
However given the warranty is up soon and she plans to keep it until 8 years or more, she is considering going outside the dealer network for the next service. I could easily change the oil & filters and lube the hinges, check the brakes etc. I'd even hang a 99p airfreshener inside for the full "premium" service effect ;-) Only thing I couldn't do is the electronic diagnostic check but hey-ho. It's a 1.6 petrol for what it's worth, so not exactly rocket science.
  • Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - Miffed With Honda 12 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I had precisely the same problem when the car was only six months old, but on the opposite side of the tailgate where the wiring of the brake lights was similarly affected. I 'phoned Honda today who declined any goodwill assistance. I appreciate the car is well out of its warranty period, but both faults were due to a manufacturing defect.
  • Corporate image and a cherished registration 6 Dec 2009 (Forum)
On Berkshire Way, Bracknell today, between two roundabouts I saw such a top of the range 5.0l black vehicle with a cherished registration (containing the initials of a car company who's UK headquarters are in close proximity) driven in a very exuberant fashion (euphemism very much intended here), possibly floored it and managed to get beyond the legal limit in the short 1/2 mile stretch before standing on the brakes to insert itself behind a lorry and turn left towards the aforementioned headquarters - nearside lane was pretty much empty btw. Net result, drivers of cars from that manufacturer even at a corporate level can appear to conform to their apparent stereotype....
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - 09 2.0 Harsh on 18" alloys - advice on change to 13 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I know handling might suffer a bit but I'm no boy racer so happy to compromise. Would this make a significant difference? Would the Titanium X be OK on smaller wheels (offset, brakes etc)? Should I get genuine Ford alloys? Should I sell the OE 18" wheels and tyres or keep for refitting when I change the car? Any suggestions for a nice quiet make of tyre but not sacrificing safe handling and reasonable wear?
  • NIP Received for Red Light offence. 10 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I completley dispute the fact that it was a red light. I was told by my instructor it is better to go through amber if you feel suddne braking would cause an accident and this is what i did. It was 100% not red.Would it be worth fighting this in court or should i just accept the 3 points and fine? I am now paranoid that ive done it since because this was 2 months ago and i am so worried that my licence will be taken away. would they have told me with this letter?
  • Hands-free mobile phones are deadly 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The study by the Transport Research Laboratory found slower reaction times for drivers using hands-free mobiles than for those who were above the legal drink drive limit. The tests included getting motorists to brake suddenly while driving at 70mph. Compared to the stopping distance of a driver in normal circumstances, the over-the-limit driver took a further 13 feet before coming to a standstill. However, the driver using a hands-free mobile phone took 26 feet, exactly twice as far, before coming to a halt.
  • Speed limit reductions 12 Sep 2009 (Forum)
There are many more cars on the road now and some of the drivers need to be told to slow down. OK, I?ve heard the arguments about braking and suspension systems being improved, but some of the drivers I see seem to have a suicide wish. In the 1960s / 70s I had a Morris Minor 1952, side valve engine, that could just about meet 50 mph on the level with a following wind.
  • Unlucky Cars 8 Sep 2009 (Forum)

  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 05 2.0 Uneven tyre wear at the rear 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
This may not sound like much, but it's pretty noticeable when you look at the tyres and I reckon I could probably get another 6 months wear out of them if they weren't wearing unevenly - it's very annoying having to change a tyre when the outer edge gets to 2mm, when the inner edge is still around 5mm ! I'm having no other noticeable suspension or brake problems, so is it simply a case of getting the tracking/toe/camber etc checked ? Would a typical ATS/Kwik Fit-style tracking check allow and include adjustment at the rear of a Mazda 6 or should I take it to somewhere which can do a proper 4-wheel alignment ?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 Problems 22 Jun 2009 (Forum)

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 05 1.6 Front Suspension 19 Jun 2009 (Forum)
With hindsight I realise I should definatley have got both front springs replaced and i,m presuming / hoping that this is whats causing the strange creaking / rumbling noise. Other than this the car runs loveley, the steering / brakes are spot on. Anyone got any thoughts? Cheers
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.6 RT Sport - poor idle, loss of power etc 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The car will run o.k from cold (most of the time) but then it will suddenly lose all power and is unable to idle and if I am driving at the time it will cut out as I slow down for junctions and then I lose the steering and brakes, which is quite scary! The only word I can think of to decribe the sound of the car when it is like this is - lumpy, which I hope makes send to someone! One mechanic has had an educated guess that it's the idle control valve and another mechanic thinks it is the coil packs and ht leads, which is really expensive especially if it turns out not to be an accurate guess - I have found an idle control vale on ebay and thought maybe this was worth a try but have no idea which number I would need.
  • Skoda Felicia (1995 - 2000) - 1999 1.3 intemitent starting problem 1 May 2009 (Forum)
when the car starts its on the button but when its playing up its in the hands of the gods. i feel its a problem with the automatic choke but am not 100%. when it wont start: i turn the key and it starts but cuts out, i then have to remove the key and start again, sometimes if i put it in gear and turn the key ( start it in gear ) it starts and keep running, when it is running its a bit lumpy sounding and when i clutch and brake to come to a stop the revs drop to 500 from 750, sometimes thay drop to 400 and the car cut out but thats when the engines cold. the plugs are good and the ignition is good, the engine has only done 32000 when its hard to start and it starts the smell of fuel is heavy and if i stall the engine and try to restart it it hesitates like its flooded. there is no plug in diagnostics and cant afford a mechanic and cant afford to buy a throttle body and thats not the problem.
  • Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 91 2.0 Mk I or II? 23 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I've noticed a constant, whine/hum coming from under the car which is on even with the vehicle standing. Is this normal and something to do with the fuel system or brakes or something? Thanking you in advance.
  • Dangerous advice in new car handbook 9 Mar 2009 (Forum)
are there going to be any folk misled and ending up with tyres pointing the wrong way? is the handling and braking really unsafe if these tyres are used pointing the wrong way? please don't ask me to test it anyway I've put the handbook away probably never to be looked at again
  • happy new year from oz 26 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have been driving my SiL's deadpan high-mileage Daewoo. a bit foxed around the edges but fingers crossed still OK. In the Blue Mountains the other day the car in front suddenly stopped causing us to brake sharply. A little spiky thing with a snout was the cause, an echydna, the only egg-laying mammal apart from the platypus. Haven't seen one of those, or a live kangaroo although there are dead ones at the roadside like foxes in England.

  • Rover 200 (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.4 MOT failed - some advice appreciated. 22 Nov 2008 (Forum)
It has failed on: 1) Emissions 6 times higher than it should on all readings - ticking noise/misfire on cylinder 2 on tickover and popping exhaust - looks like it might be a burnt exhaust valve? 2) two front shock absorbers 3) two front tyres 4) track rod end 5) corroded brake pipes - most were done last year so cant be much - I think its where it goes to the calipers. Any ideas of cost for that little lot (tyres aside)? I think the emissions are the key to getting the rest done.
