I've wondered this a few times. What keeps small companies ahead of big ass corps with much more resources? Performance wise I mean. Do they snag the best engineers or something? And how do they compete materials wise? Do the big ones simply not care about innovating performance?

Assuming this is a genuine question ...

In software big companies can have a large hard to maintain product with lots of old code that with time has become expensive and difficult to maintain. A small company can start from scratch, producing something with more modern design methods and coding tools, that is far cheaper to maintain and extend. And in general big companies can become bloated, bureaucratic and inefficient, serving the internal hierarchy rather than customer needs. ...

I have the new shape 2013 model SantaFe and frankly it’s been a great car and the service from Hyundai faultless. We plan to keep the car but musing over whether to swap the manual box for an Auto. Does anyone have any idea how easy this would be and a ball park cost? We would use the same Hyundai dealership as ever but fancy knowing ‘something’ before going in and talking to them. Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Might just upgrade when the time is right. These Santa Fe’s are such good dependable cars I’ll probably just get the new 2018 model.

Hi,

Here's the situation. We live in a village in Wiltshire and our house is situated on a narrow lane. There are 9 properties in relative close proximity 5 of which are a terrace. We've lived on this lane for 25 years.... Read more

Very good of you to update us, Paul.

A pity that the developer didn't use a surveyor of Happy Blue's calibre, who might have told him at a early stage that this wouldn't work - and not to start work without planning permission.

The gentle curve of the boot lid on my Audi A3 saloon is too much to allow adhesive pads to work.Does anyone know if there are any wires or other reason why I cannot use approved coloured plastic screws by drilling two holes in the outer skin? Read more

I had a similar thing with my Lexus Ct200h.

The old number plate was held on with pads and I had a private plate. I went through all kinds of scenarios and was going to settle on extremely sticky velcro for the new plates....

Hello all, I’m going to look at a fairly low mileage Toyota Yaris auto at a dealer. The dealer isn’t sure where the car originated from although I’m sure the VIN will tell me this. It’s right-hand drive and mileage is in Km. The usual internet checks for MOT, etc, only go back two years (the car is 11 years old). The V5 is available.

I’m just wary that the history can’t be seen. Any other pitfalls to be wary of, please? Read more

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I didn’t get to see the car in the end as I would’ve been able to see the VIN and at least know the country or origin. It’s odd the dealer hadn’t done so as it’s an obvious question from any potential buyer. Yes, the price is nothing special. It’s easy now to get basic free checks online showing previous MOTs along with advisories abs mileages, and it concerned me this only went back two years with this model. That and the mystery country of origin, no thanks.

But I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, so thanks again.

On December 5 I paid Asda Tyres via the online web site about £300 for 4 tyres to be fitted on Sunday. The next day they rang and said they could not fulfil the order until Tuesday. Not being able to get to the garage during the week I cancelled. Over a week later and I still have not received a refund. Today I received an email saying they have approved a refund and it will reach me within 14 days. I am sure this is not unique to Asda Tyres, but how can it be right to keep someone’s money for so long? I have the fortune that this does not inconvenience me, but I could imagine someone on a low income needing tyres could be in serious trouble.

Does anyone know if any laws apply to refunds and the time to process? Obviously they took the money electronically overnight, and the slow refund is a way to improve their cash flow. I am surprised such a well known brand behaves like this.... Read more

Would have to say my one and only purchase of tyres from an overseas tyre site was 100% positive.

Now that the Pound has gone up quite a bit over the last month or two, especially after the General Election result, this more than outweighs the smaller increase in the oil price, so the price of petrol and diesel should drop far more than 2p a litre.

As always, a great video. Made me laugh about the perceived quality of soft touch dashboards, etc as so many other reviewers bang on about this. I would be more worried about the oily bits of a car going wrong rather than a bit of plastic or fake leather. Have a great Christmas. Read more

Hi Guys,

So I jump started my friends ford Fiesta Zetec as his battery completely died, and before doing so my VW Golf was giving me around 75 - 80 MPG on the motorway, even in cold.

Straight away after using my car to jumpstart his, I think it has had an adverse affect on my cars battery/alternator/fuel injectors? ... Read more

What the OP's question and subsequent problem reveals is the danger in donor starting any modern car. I'm afraid my attitude to anyone asking me to jump start their car would be an outright refusal. Surely rescue organisations like the AA exist to help in such situations. They can also be held responsible for any accidental damage.
