Oh us poor thick as two planks drivers, motorways without hard shoulders in the dark arn't too complicated in the least for us, what they are is terrifying for the poor soul who breaks down on one.

Maybe not so bad if you are able bodied and on your own, assuming you arn't on an elevated section (remember to pack parachute) you should with a bit of luck be able to get out and over the barrier before something huge cleans what was once your car from the carriageway, nothing against competent drivers of large vehicles at all, it's simply more likely to be a HGV in the left lane and HGV's do not come with crumple zones.

If you are less able bodied or have infirm passengers or children in the car, the nightmare scenario is too horrible to imagine.
A hard shoulder was an unpleasant enough place to have to stop, but at least it wasn't a live running lane.

More and longer refuges needed, and more lighting of smart motorways, if nothing else refuges should be street lit immediately so they are more visible than current.

My current count so far is around 6 unwarned of stationary vehicles in live lanes in west mids M6 area alone, and several elsewhere, even at just over 50mph when you come upon a surprise stopped vehicle in a live lane it's shocking just how fast you are closing on it as you try to merge into the adjacent lane.

One wonders if improvements will be made to the Stafford/Stoke sections, the Coventry section, and the Northampton to Jct 13 sections currently under construction now that Jim O'Sullivan is on the case, something simple for us simple folk :-) Read more

We are looking at this problem of smart motorways all wrong.
Just take the people who are involved in this idea to court and then jail them for breaking Health and Safety law and causing harm to the public.
It's a very educated but under commonsensed person's idea and they need some life skills.

Strangely enough off to Sevilla for a bit of luxe, Paella and a tour of some bodegas in Jerez.

Went to southern Spain last year. Travelled on the trains and long distance buses. Very good service and cheap. On the buses ask for retiro when buying the tickets. For the trains you can buy a Tarjeto Dorado which gives a very useful discount. Enjoy the menu del dias and have a aniseed brandy at breakfast like the locals. Great place, great fun.

Tarjeto Dorado. done 6 euros. Problem is parking in Spain, and hire cars......

Attempting to assist a friend replacing the copper seal on fuel injector as it was puffing mist into the engine compartment while running. injector removed and evidence of leak past distorted seal, dressed the seat in the head with correct tool, replaced the injector using new copper washer and stretch bolt, torqued to correct figure and then the correct degree to tighten. on start, found to be the same and when stretch bolt was removed coolant started pouring out, re did the job with thicker washer and same again, transpires the mist being ejected is coolant. does anyone know why engine coolant would be pumping out the bolt hole, cracked head or cylinder head gasket blown? Any advice extremely welcome, thanks, Mike. Read more

£5000 is about the worst amount of money to spend on a car in my opinion.

I'd agree, but as I pointed out above, the title says ""under £5000"" and the general assumption above that that means £5000 is revealing, consumer psychology wise....

The trouble with 911s, and indeed all properly proper sports cars, is that by the time you can afford one, its just too late.

I so wanted one 30 years ago, but with starting a business, a family and a thumping big mortgage, at that time, it was never going to be more than a dream. Now that I'm at a point in life when its more of a possibility, I would just look like a rather sad old geezer trying a bit too hard to hang on to my lost youth.

I suppose I could get a beige one. Read more

The driver's side window is refusing to close up. Taken it to garage and they confirmed that the regulator needs replacing but could be anywhere between £200-£300 for parts and labour. What is the general consensus on doing this yourself?

I am a total beginner when it comes to car maintenance, but I have a fair amount of tools. Obviously there are videos out there too.... Read more
