Hi,

Hope someone can provide some insight, help or advice on how to tackle a problem I have which is simply not going away and has cost me a bundle already.

Have had a Bluehdi 1.6 from new and full service history, abou 11k miles a year.

Over a week ago, EML light came on whilst driving on motorway. Went to main dealer and diagnosed p02ed and p00bc fault codes. Upshot was I had to have EGR Valve replaced. Did about 20 miles and error reoccurred. Took back to garage and they reprogrammed EGR Valve and road tested it. Drove it for 5 miles and same fault happened.

Now getting pretty stressed about where this could lead and money getting tight. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else to check which could clear this issue. Car is out of warranty. Was never offered an extension as apparently I could have taken one out. I’m guessing until fixed this would not pass an MOT which is due.

One other observation. Service light is illuminated and is 1k miles overdue. Booked in for 10 days time and MOT done same time. Was told this would not cause an issue but I am thinking could it be causing a phantom issue and causing this alarm to force the service to be done now?

Any help appreciated and thanks in advance for reading. Read more

Clearly changing the EGR has not cured it - this post ( http://www.ds3club.co.uk/forum/ds3/ds3-technical/397668-1-6-hdi-eml-on-fault-codes ) suggests the MAF may be at fault (which seems more likely to me). Given that the EML came back on shortly after the 'repair' then I would be back demanding a refund for that and a proper fix....

Astra van would sell in good numbers

I don't it would have, otherwise it would still be being made. After all, it wouldn't cost that much to develop, just an Astra estate with blanked rear side windows, heavier duty suspension and two fewer doors. It was a good looking thing for a van, but ultimately not that practical due to the lack of height, lack of rear side doors and relatively small payload. Unless you need the extra length of load bay, the Corsa van will do most of what the Astra did (the payload is only 15% less). If you need more, whether it be length, height, or payload, that is what the Combo is for.

Hi, my I10 has just been for a service at the Hyundai dealer and they have said the car has a heavy clutch which should be changed. They want £600 to change it. The car has 74000 miles . How long would any of you guys wait to change this? Will it go for another few years with this condition? This clutch has been in for about 60,000 miles.

I'm unsure how this clutch operates, but before i spent any money i'd go around with an oil can or aerosol grease and apply a little at every pivot or moving point in the system, starting at the pedal, if its a cable clutch try and feed some oil down the cable itself.

I shouldn't need to say but someone will pipe up otherwise :-), avoid getting any lubricant on the clutch itself....

Hi all

Had an interesting incident last night with my car, I had a warning beep and a "Transmission Error - Check Handbook" message pop up on the dash. I pulled over and then gently revved the car to try to pull away but the car jumped and stopped (as if the car had stalled in gear), I tried a few times but the same thing kept happening so I switched the engine off, waiting for a few seconds and then switched it back on again and pulled away with no problem in both automatic and semi-auto.... i have a similar problem but the car wont engage any gear. a fault code is needed before anything can be done. so if you have a fault light this is what you have to do.

Plates and the odd bit of prep is normal but if you bought it as having full history, it is priced as having full service history but turns out it hasn't then the car has materially changed and so has the value. There is a clear get out on the contract.

As far as depreciation is concerned if you do big miles in anything it will hit the value. Mileage costs. On the upside it will almost certainly lose less money between 70k and 130k than it did between 0k and 70k....

The plugs are trapping rainwater in the doors. Can I remove the plugs or do they serve a purpose? Read more

When I got my last Honda Civic FN3 in 2007 as a pre-reg with 10 miles on it or something, there were some absorbent fabric pads with a plastic clip folded over the lower sill drain slots, two each side, to stop the rustproofing dripping on the showroom carpet and were supposed to be removed and binned at the PDI. They weren't, so I had to do it.

Looks like you voided the corrosion warranty!...

I treated myself to a 'new' (2009, 1 owner, FSH, immaculate) Grand Vitara to replace a troublesome Honda. Very happy with it.

I just wanted to confirm that the engines in these are a little gruff compared to the pretty silky iVTEC unit in the old Honda. I've done some digging and the J20A engine does not have VVT (Don't mind, less to go wrong, and it suits the vehicle) but all the tech specs in the world don't tell you an engines characteristics! I'm almost retired now and have had some health scares so I'm most probably going to build or buy a day van camper thing to tour about in for say a few years. Now I know the economics and pros and cons and all the arguments for and against but it's my money, my time, my interests! Criteria will be as new as possible, budget for van itself say up to £11k or so. Van to be medium van as small as possible but practical for normal use. Economy to approach 40 mpg on a run if possible. the obvious choice VW transporter appears overpriced and not reliable. Difficult to get reliable information on reliability! Peugeot expert/ Toyota proace looks good as does Ford transit custom. But IV no experience of which van might be the best option, but I've pretty much ruled out the VW, not being good value and full of issues. Any experience out there? Thanks Read more

Some interesting ideas thanks. I love the idea of an imported Granvia or similar. Much of the converted market in these is an expensive conversion on a pretty old vehicle, in fact some of the prices are eye watering! But if I could find a decent diesel hiace I would be keen on a basic DIY attempt. There are a few UK ones around. I find the whole conversion campervan market quite a minefield and what I consider ridiculously expensive but perhaps I'm being tight. I may go for a newish expert or dispatch which is the proace in fact , as IV not seen any horror stories and they are far better value than the VW options. But I'm going to have to think it through more, as it's possible something smaller like a Berlingo or nissan nv200 might suffice, depending on what our requirements are.

After 2 years (possibly longer) we have finally persuaded the wife's uncle to buy a new car. His Fiesta was coming up to 16 years old, had it since new but you could not call it well looked after or in good condition. When I checked its MOT history it has more advisories from last year than I could be bothered to list (including chassis corrosion) and add to that he has no idea what work the local garage do on a service (just gives them the money they ask for) and has no idea if the cam belt has ever been swapped.

All his cars up to the Fiesta were bought from the same garage new but as the franchise changed so did his cars. Fords, Hillmans, Chryslers, Talbot and then a Vauxhall. When they stopped selling cars we had to take him into Barnsley to look at alternatives and that is when he got the Fiesta.... Read more

I suppose it also matters both how long you intend to keep the car and the running costs - when I bought my first car, a 1996-build Micra, I also looked at a new Suzuki Alto from the same time (I was buying in 1998) which only cost £5k at the time at dealers.

I was shocked at the much higher price I would've paid in insurance because like many smaller Japanese makes back then (e.g. Mitsubishi) that didn't have parts factories or a significant presence in the UK/Europe, meaning replacement components were expensive and maintenance prices were above rivals....

I was involved in an accident on saturday, 3 car pile up at a set of traffic lights, Car no3 at the back went into car no2 in the middle ultimately sending them crashing into me car no1 at the front.

I called my insurance and they have told me Auxillis will be calling to get me into a hire car, and that somebody from their approved garage will call to arrange to take my car away and estimate the cost of the damage. ... Read more

Hope you get it sorted. My lad was side swiped in a complete no fault accident

It took me over 2 months to get a satisfactory payout and for it FINALLY to be accepted as a non fault claim. The insurers simply didnt want to know. Even when it came for renewal time suddenly the no claims hadnt been added....
