Hello all,

Here's what happened. On a local high street I was following another vehicle and the left hand side of the road was blocked by a Tesco delivery lorry, which was double parked. At the point I was committed to going into the gap, (I was following another vehicle who had done the same), another vehicle turned left and filled the gap I was about to enter. So, being now on the wrong side of the road, and with another vehicle approaching me, I stopped. I selected reverse to create the space to allow this vehicle to pass, and looked over my left shoulder to see if any car was behind me. My car moved back around 3 feet, and at that point I bumped into a pedestrian who had crossed the road on a zebra crossing behind me. I had not seen her over my left shoulder and the collision happened as I took my foot off the brake and onto the accelerator (it's automatic).... Read more

As others have said, this has been a most instructive topic and your attitude towards the whole stressful experience excellent.

Many thanks for keeping everyone informed so thoroughly.

Just a quick question regarding getting the water pump replaced. I have rang Ford and asked how much it would cost to replace the water pump in my Ford Focus 2010 Zetec S 1.8 Petrol. They are quoting me nearly £500 but I rang a local garage from fixmycar.com and they quoted a rough estimate of £168.00. Both prices include parts, labour and vat.

Was the Ford price at main dealer rates?

If so try a quote via their Motorcraft service instead. When I had a Ford I used Motorcraft (Rapifit back then) for servicing, Ford parts, but much cheaper than main dealer prices....

Hi!

I have a Seat Ibiza 1.4 (6L). Just noticed the other day that there was a coolant leak. Got under the car and noticed that it was leaking from a part that connects to the bottom of the radiator. Between the lower radiator hose and the radiator. Don't know the exact name of the part but have attached a picture that shows where the leak is. Have made a red circle of where it leaks.

Now to the question. Do I have to change the whole radiator or only the black piece?

If you've taken it off and found a leaking crack, I would try coating it inside and out with a loose paste made from fibreglass resin and filler powder.

I might try it, but I wouldn't put much money on it withstanding regular cycling in hot slightly corrosive solution. Even the bottom of a radiator can get quite warm.

Hi has anyone else experienced gearbox issues with the UP GTI 2019, this is our second UP GTI the first one had a complete engine failure within 24 hours of owning with less than 50 miles on the clock, VW replaced with another new GTI now 4 months later and 2900 miles the gearbox has crashed and VW have said no parts are available in UK so we now have to wait as it as a back order on the factory, to say the least we are not happy bunnies Read more

It'd be interesting to know what gearbox is fitted - it should be shown on the car sticker. I wonder if they have just put in the same version as the lower powered non turbo cars?

The mq200(200Nm tourque) fitted to my 1.4tsi Superb (125ps) still seems perfect at about 75k miles. I think the later EA211 150ps versions have the mq250 gearbox....

I suppose that one of the defining things here would be to ask whether a) certain parts on a car that don't require maintenance, such as the fuel tank should be designed to last the lifespan of the vehicle, and b) what IS the defined lifespan of the vehicle?...

I have just renewed the wiper blades on my car and was wondering if they can be recycled anywhere? Read more

Engineer Andy

Its obvious people cannot do it anyway due to the amount of rubbish that gets chucked on our streets, its surprising how many drivers stop at the side of the road and empty the car before driving off or dumping their black rubbish bags I passed several doing that earlier today

I thinbk that's more general fly-tipping to avoid businesses paying for commercial waste removal/disposal/recycling (including dodgy contractors) and the recent trend back to properties being occupied by multiple families/far higher occupancy than they were designed for to accommodate foreign workers (sometimes illegally - I've seen this in TV reports in major cities quite a lot) who thus get through way more refuse and recycling (if they even bother sorting it, which I doubt) than the standard one bin or each plus a brown bin for garden waste....

Hello everyone,,

I have a Samsung "smart" TV which has an internet connection and is fabulous for watching programmes via the built-in apps (iPlayer, More4, etc.), however, the ITV player is (and always has been) totally useless!... Read more

Thank you bolt. Our TV is about 2 years old so not too outdated!! I had the good fortune to receive a visit from my nephew with his 11 year old. Between them they downloaded the app in no time. Works a treat too. Watched an episode of Inspector George Gently last night on it. TBH I was perfectly happy with our Panasonic 47" Plasma, all it needed was a magic box to smarten it up, but SWMBO wanted an LED so we got the LG. I only just managed to talk her out of a curved screen TV in John Lewis. Seemed such a waste to me. I gave the Plasma to a friends daughter and it is still going strong. Fashion/Gadget victim again!!!

I have manual 1.5 TSI Evo Golf and after updating software main dealer said no more can be done for the car and it drives just like any other 1.5 TSI Golf. Software update made a slight difference but still hesitates and kangaroos especially when cold. Currently with VW Customer Services but have taken legal advice on handing car back. Very disappointed as this is 3rd VW car and previous 1.4 TSI ACT Golf was so smooth.
