sparky100

Hi, my daughters qashqui was driving perfectly till last night, she went to start it this morning and it started very roughly and white smoke came from the exhaust.

Would anyone have any ideas what could be wrong before she contacts a garage.... Read more

I presume "and won't rev beyond 8" is a misprint.

Yes, should have read 800rpm....

A few weeks back when pulling out at a roundabout I had a sudden loss of power and the car started juddering. Took it in to a local independent Ford specialist who did a compression test and found that the compression in cylinder 3 was around half of what it should be. I was told the car needs a new engine (it's only 10 months out of warranty and has just 24k miles on the clock).

I removed the coil pack and spark plug from the affected cylinder and put an endoscope down there and found some pretty bad scoring on the bore. Is this likely the result of a failed piston ring, broken valve or something else? What could have caused this?... Read more

Have you had the vehicle serviced at a Ford dealer or another garage. There isn't a 6 year life warranty what the law says is that something should last for 6 years but with a car it needs servicing to the correct standards if this hasn't happened you may have a problem getting any help.

Baffling me and the local wheel balancing community. Any thoughts most welcome and much appreciated.

I20 (63 plate) developed a wheel wobble around 50mph. Had the front wheels balanced and problem solved. Around 100 miles later, wobble returns. The wobble can be felt through the car. Ive never driven it (my wifes) but as a passenger its worrying. Cant imagine what its like to drive !... Read more

Don't often have rear seat passengers, today someone sat in the left rear seat and the seatbelt warning bleep and light wouldn't stop when she plugged the belt in. After unplugging and trying again the bleep stopped, the light went to half brightness and out after a minute or two.

I suspect there is a bad contact somewhere, any suggestions for fixing this myself or does it mean a trip to the local auto electricians? Read more

Thanks for the information chaps. It is certainly a sure fire way of preventing driving whilst affected by alcohol/drugs. I wonder if it could become law. At present it is obviously voluntary, which kind of defeats the object. Law abiding and careful citizens will ensure they are safe to drive anyway, the other lot won't.

Cheers Concrete...

Clueless Dipstick

Hi.

My old (2002) Focus has developed an electrical problem: the driver's side window won't lower (it's in the fully raised position, so I can't tell whether or not it will raise, either), and the cigar lighter doesn't work. I've done a continuity test on the all the fuses (main and auxiliary) but found none blown. ... Read more

Clueless Dipstick

Thanks for the reply: I'll check the fuse again (I didn't remove it --- I simply put a multimeter across the exposed terminals at the top and ran a continuity test, so I'll try pulling it out). And if I can get the door card off, then I'll have a look at the motor that raises/lowers the window. I'm not knowledgeable about cars (as you may surmise!) but if I can fix something myself, then I'd like to do so. ...Although maybe this is a job for a professional.

The funny thing is that these problems started after I had a flat battery and trickle charged it. The battery seems to work (the ignition starts, etc.) but I think I probably need a new one...

I'm thinking of getting a 'find my car' app for my phone - but there's loads - does anyone have any recommendations, thanks Read more

Waze as well as being a popular navigation app allows you to mark where you parked the car. And find it afterwards. It's not a tracker device though .

For those of us with Toyotas the MyT Toyota app. also has the facility to mark where you parked your car (but is not a tracker).
