You simply need to be very attentive in my experience. Using a comparison site gets lots of cheap quotes, but if you’re not careful the excess is set high, or valuable extras have been stripped out.
But sadly the industry isn’t clean, and exploits our laziness, or misplaced belief in loyalty.
A call to your existing insurer often results in the price coming down if you hint about leaving. Read more
I'm looking for a 2007 or later model with approx 50k mileage. I've read great reviews on both models, but I'm finding the Yaris of a similar spec to a Jazz is more expensive. Any readlson why, am I missing something I should be aware of? Looking on Auto trader btw..
I've compared using a budget of around £3k and noted this difference. I know Yaris sometimes have £30 tax models but it's not just this variation.... Read more
I have a current model Yaris.
If you will be carrying rear seat passengers often, I would choose the Jazz. The Yaris lacks rear headroom and lacks any door pockets....
I have a 2015 Focus petrol 1.6 powershift which has developed a juddering slipping problem.
I took it to Ford, and they have said I need a new gearbox and clutch pack at a cost of £3500.... Read more
A quote of £3500 suggests the dealer you approached is not interested. Try another dealer or as suggested go to Ford directly
HJ suggests www.fedauto.co.uk as means of contacting an independent specialist for another opinion or fix
Has anyone ever had or know of a 2019 SEAT IBIZA 1.0 MPI SE TECHNOLOGY clutch going within a week and why this happens?
Had new car delivered on a Friday, Thursday morning on the way to work me clutch went!!! Read more
Sorry to hear of the problems you're having with your new car.
You might get a better response here, if you can tell us the issue with the clutch....
I was trying to comment on the thread about Nespresso machines. When clicked onto the thread you just get a box about car car leasing on the HJ site. Don't know what is going on.
Anyway, We had a Nespresso machine and it was fine. A bit small if there are a few wanting coffee at the same time. We found the pods were getting expensive, even through other online suppliers rather than Nestle. Also disposing of the pods is a pain. One website used to take them back for recycling but they stopped that. We now have a De Longhi machine. We fill the water reservoir and it is good for quite a few cups. Also we put beans into the hopper at the top and it grinds them as needed. Makes great coffee and you can select the strength. Espresso, Americano etc. and it does two cups at once if you wish. It also has a milk steamer if required, great machine, and coffee beans are cheaper to buy, especially abroad. But on the whole for the occasional cup for one or two the Nespresso does the job, for a price.... Read more
Looks like the thread has been pruned as it was clearly spam-related.
So, now 9 months on, no further problems to speak of, but tailgate gas struts getting weak.. NOT covered under warranty.
Bodywork thin, another nasty dent on the crease line of the front door n/s.... Read more
Very poor strategic management from MG in my opinion, look at Kia and where they are today. They undersold vehicles years past to get ahead and worked very hard to build up a reputation of loyality and brand and also caring customer service. MG seem to have a good 'headline' price but the product seems to have questions that are coming to light concerning the quality and durability. The rust issues also seem to be appearing on some vehicles whilst the maker looks the other way and could not care less. It is interesting that they do not offer 12 year anti perforation warranty terms like most other makers. I do not see a good future for MG unless they up their game and change strategy.
For the past 25 years I have driven BMW and Mercedes cars. Normally buying new and selling at 3-4 years old. Back in May I ordered a new MB C220d AMG Line for September delivery, however earlier this month I cancelled the order. The reason for this is the disgusting way that EU countries behave towards the UK. I cannot stomach the thought of over £40k of my money going to support Germany in furthering their aim of dominating Europe.
The question now is what equivalent car to buy that is not EU made? I don't see very many US cars on our roads. I know Cadillac was available a few years ago. Can they be ordered? Read more
Thread closed: too much politics. "Common Sense Guy" if you post again on this forum, please stick to motoring in this section.
My vehicle is registered in the UK (Northern Ireland). I recently spent two weeks in the Republic of Ireland and the engine became damaged beyond repair. It will not get back on the road without a new engine, and it is not financially sensible to do so. The car is 400 miles away from my home, so it would be expensive to get it towed back simply for the purpose of scrapping it.
I have spoken to a garage in Cork who will have the car scrapped on my behalf.... Read more
That's what I did when mine died in France. No trouble at all, and even got the road tax back.
Thinking of buying an Audi A4 Allroad, manual, 2.0 tdi. 2012. I do approx 15000 miles pa, with a 20m each way commute. ( mostly motorway with a short section urban roads) .Dont actually need 4x4, but do prefer it. Any thoughts re engine choice etc. My other thought is either a Kia Sportage 2.0, or an X1 X Drive. Thoughts most appreciated. Read more
These are great cars but there are a couple of things you should be aware of. 2012 is smack in the middle of VAG's emissions cheating and the car has most likely had the software update, the update has a significantly detrimental effect on the cars reliability and durability. Hugely expensive repairs to EGR valve, DPF and fuel system are very common. It's relatively easy and not too expensive to have the original software reinstalled and its perfectly legal as well but will only be done by an independent car tuner
You can check if the car has had the emissions update by entering the VIN on Audi's web site, search for "emissions update".

Plates and the odd bit of prep is normal but if you bought it as having full history, it is priced as having full service history but turns out it hasn't then the car has materially changed and so has the value. There is a clear get out on the contract.
As far as depreciation is concerned if you do big miles in anything it will hit the value. Mileage costs. On the upside it will almost certainly lose less money between 70k and 130k than it did between 0k and 70k....

A word of warning!!! I used M&S's Insurance broker - online - which stated that my policy would be automatically renewed - unless I rang and cancelled auto-renewal - which I did! Fast-forward 12 months and I received an M&S email saying my insurance had been automatically renewed. "Dam, I must not have cancelled the auto renewal," I thought. Now I receive about 50 emails a day...and a couple of days later I failed to spot the fact that I'd received a second email from M&S in my 'in box'. A couple of months later I received a letter from the DVLA saying my car appeared to be uninsured - yet it had no no record of a SCORN notification. I searched my emails - knowing I'd been notified of my M&S renewal...and found the second (unopened) email from M&S stating that they'd been unable to renew my cover due to the credit card details having been removed! I've never failed to insure my car(s) in over 50 years of driving...until this year! I could so easily have been stopped - by the auto number plate recognition camera units - and prosecuted for not having insurance. I'd have been mortified...but my defence would be zero. Just be aware!!!
Oh, and when I did renew my insurance with M&S - in a panic after receiving the DVLC letter - the premium had DROPPED by £40!! :)...
