Hi all,
I am unable to close my boot. Apparently the car is provided with Allen-Type keys to enable a manual close. I do not have them, are they regular Allen Keys?
Can anyone help me?

I have a 2Litre (320D) E91, 2008 reg. It's an SE with extra bits (Business edition, 17inch alloys, leather and better audio). It has just reached 100K miles, but still goes well. I have had it since new, so know all that has happened to it -not much actually. It was my company car originally then I bought it at 3 year old. I think I have been lucky. as the only mechanical parts it has needed while I owned it was rear tailgate struts, a leakoff pipe and a shock absorber, plus one battery and tyres and servicing.
Do I keep it or replace, and if so what with? I do 8-10k miles a year now, like the way it drives. I have driven both the F30 and new G model 3 series (a saloon, estate not out yet). Nether drive as nicely as my E90, but the 2019 model is not bad, but oh dear, so expensive.... Read more
I might even treat it to a set of winter tyres on steel rims come winter, that might solve the problem of not being able to get it out of the drive when it snows.
That's it then? I always find that if I treat myself to new tyres I am committed to keeping it!
My Clio III has started squealing under light brake pressure. The front discs and pads were last done in Feb 2018 and still have plenty of life in them, and the rear discs and pads were done in Feb this year.
I first noticed the squeal shortly after the rear brakes were done, but it was only once in a while so I thought they probably just needed to bed in. Unfortunately it has recently become worse to the point of being annoying so I've had the all the calipers and pads out, applied copper paste to the rear and ears of the pads and made sure the clips are in properly. This has made zero difference.... Read more
Thanks for the suggestions all.
Will have a crack at this over the weekend and report back. ...
On one of my regular motorcycling routes through Wales, I pass a farmhouse just outside of Bryneglwys on the A5104 to Corwen. In the yard in front of the house, there are some cars which look like they've been sat there for quite some time - none has ever changed position in the 3 or 4 years I've been using that route (which I do probably a dozen times per year).
One of the cars is an early 2000s Maserati Quattroporte, just sitting on the long grass. That was a £75K car when new, and now effectively just scrap.... Read more

Tasked with finding a good used car for brother in law for up to £7,000 I started looking at my usual default choices, Mazda 3, Honda Civic, Toyota Auris and Ford Focus 1.6 petrol. It never ceases to impress me how many excellent cars you can buy for so little money. There really is no need to buy an overpriced new car at all. Standing in the local Honda showroom looking at the new Jazz auto at over £19,000 horrified me.
I finally cut it down to a 64 plate Toyota Auris 1.4 diesel with 28,000 miles at £6495 and a 63 plate Honda Civic 1.4 with 53,000 miles at £5995. Both were in excellent order and drove spot on but the Civic is just that wee bit nicer inside and the metallic white paint particularly nice so we went for that. £5,800 with a years warranty for a 63 plate approved used Honda Civic that drives exactly as it did when new is to me fine value and hopefully this one will last as long as the one I sold his brother several years back. It’s 18yrs old and still doing a daily 120 mile commute reliably.
Forget badge snobbery, why worry about how fast it is? If you want a reliable used car on a budget it’s hard to beat a Civic. Even this lowly 1.4 went along the road well enough. It’ll sit all day at 100mph if you do desired. Read more
I've made plenty of sensible life decisions, and indeed a few reckless ones along the way. The latter were, by and large, way more fun, in their defence. ;-) "Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting 'Holy S--- what a ride!' " ~ Hunter S. Thompson.
I trust you either do not, or did not, plan to blow your brains out aged 67 as per Mr Thompson - who thus thankfully ensured the world was spared any more of his alcoholic ravings.....
Hi.
I'm going if done of you nice guys and girls could help.
I'm on holiday in France at the moment, and my 140k mile Mk 3 2013 Focus Econetic Titanium has just died completely.
We were on the A13 in Normandy, and I got a warning on the dashboard center display (trip computer, not radio) saying "Park assist malfunction, service now". All the dash lights came on, Speedo dropped to zero. I assumed I'd lost an abs sensor. Trip computer went blank (just dashes). Then the display said "immobiliser malfunction, service now". I thought it was a display issue, as the rev counter was still working, but we were going down hill. When we got to the bottom, I realised the car was totally dead, and it was just the engine turning over.
We pulled over, and even the stop start button doesn't work. Even pressing it for 30s does not turn the car off. Everything's still "on", including the power steering. It's just sitting there, complaining that the keyfree fob is not in the car, fans on, dash on, windows working. I can't lock the car - the fob does nothing.
Putting the key into the ignition hole doesn't stop it complaining, or let me turn it off.
We've been recovered, but our holiday is in jeopardy. The car's being taken to a garage on Monday, and we hope to be able to get a hire car to carry on to our camping trip.
My main question is does anyone know what might have failed to cause this? I'm guessing it's something simple like a fuse (but why would it blow now?) Or something catastrophic, like A BCM, PCM etc. Driving across the UK and Normandy had some of the wettest weather I've ever driven in. In wondering if water's got into something important.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Glad you made it back ok. However ,if the car is fitted with stop start system and is on its original battery, I would strongly suggest you get the battery replaced. It is likely to be fitted with a Johnson controls make which I have seen die without any warning.
I was aware that Johnson Controls owned the Varta brand, but looking that up reveals now they have sold their battery business (Power Solutions Division) to Brookfield Business Partners. It's even more complicated than that if you can be bothered to plough through this lot....
Last weekend I paid a £400 deposit against a £4000 BMW 318d Estate (negotiated down from £4300) with a view to collecting it today. The dealer is now telling me that since paying the deposit, the car has a clutch problem & may need a new clutch & flywheel, he's offering to refund the deposit, but I get the impression he's now trying to wriggle out of the sale so that he can re-list it at a higher price to cover the cost of the work that will have to be done. I'd still like to buy the car at the agreed price (obviously with the fault corrected) but I'm unsure where I stand legally. I know that the deposit binds ME to the sale, but does it in any way bind the dealer...?
Any thoughts appreciated.... Read more
The OP has not specified exactly which era of 3 series we are talking about here, but looking at prices on Autotrader i suspect a late E90 ('05-'12). As has been mentioned on here to folk even thinking about 1 of these, they really are not that reliable with the exception of 6 cyl petrols. And 4 cyl diesels (like the car in question) seem to be about the worst of the bunch. The 'good/bad' section of the relevant review on this website makes for pretty grim reading!. Have a look through this,
I live in Leicester and I’ve noticed quite a few cars recently (mostly boy racer types) not displaying their front number plates, I assume they do this to make their cars look “cool” and avoid detection of forward facing speed cameras. Additionally, I’ve also seen more cars that have a black tint on their number plates, some so dark it’s difficult to read. Again, I assume they do this to avoid fixed speed camera detection (I believe when the camera flashes, it blurs out the number plate).
Of course this is all illegal, but they get away with it as there’s no traffic police about these days. Do other BR’s see this in their area? Read more
Another dodge I recall if you had a reg that includes an "F" or a "P" or a "3" for example you turned those letters into a "E" or a "B" or an "8" with a felt tip marker black or whiteboard dry-wipe pen.
And it's done quite a lot over here in France!...
Hopefully it’s a regular 6 side hex. Not sure what size they are .
