After 2 years (possibly longer) we have finally persuaded the wife's uncle to buy a new car. His Fiesta was coming up to 16 years old, had it since new but you could not call it well looked after or in good condition. When I checked its MOT history it has more advisories from last year than I could be bothered to list (including chassis corrosion) and add to that he has no idea what work the local garage do on a service (just gives them the money they ask for) and has no idea if the cam belt has ever been swapped.
All his cars up to the Fiesta were bought from the same garage new but as the franchise changed so did his cars. Fords, Hillmans, Chryslers, Talbot and then a Vauxhall. When they stopped selling cars we had to take him into Barnsley to look at alternatives and that is when he got the Fiesta.... Read more
I had motor insurance cancelled by car insurer several days before it was due to start because they said I did not meet the underwriting criteria. They refunded the policy.
I was worried about needing to declare the cancellation to other insurers in the future which would greatly increase premiums. The insurer however told me the cancellation did not need to be declared to other insurers. The advised that the information would not be shared with any databases for other insurers, so other insurers would be unaware.... Read more
If it were me I would demand a written statement as to why the insurance was cancelled - especially if it were a clerical error at their end.
Then I'd use a broker and give them a PDF of the statement and let them do the legwork in brokering you a good deal that wont' penalise you....
"Orders are now open for the 2020 Renault Clio with prices starting at £14,295" and then
"The cheapest Clio on sale now starts at £15,295"
Which is correct please?. Read more
Orders may be open, but the car isn't on Renault's configurator yet....
Is it not long past time that manufacturers were obliged to fit odometers that are tamper-proof or at least allow easy detection if tampering has occurred?
Manufacturers benefit from there being a secondary market where their customers can in turn sell their products and it seems wrong morally that they facilitate dishonest acts that harm buyers in that secondary market. Read more
If a factory fitted GPS can be remotely unlocked to give details of where the car is at the time.I can't believe that it (GPS) dosn't know
what the actual mileage is.Could be checked at MOT and new ones
could just be checked for mileage, although some at the end of three
years are worse than an old one.

My spidey sense is tingling here - do I detect the presence of canned pork products, given an embedded hyperlink has been used and the lack of detail from the OP, and that I don't remember the name in other threads on the forum.
Maybe I'm just a glass half-empty guy...

Do BMW brake lights flash under very heavy braking? I thought his were doing so approaching roundabout on ring road.
Yes, I think most newish cars have brake lights which do this. Have to be some serious retardation though - braking and driver :>)

AFAIK it switches off the ultrasonics for the alarm, meaning you could leave children, dogs, etc in a locked car without the alarm going off. I think it will also stop the alarm sounding when the car is on the car deck of a ferry and getting rocked about.
I was involved in an accident on saturday, 3 car pile up at a set of traffic lights, Car no3 at the back went into car no2 in the middle ultimately sending them crashing into me car no1 at the front.

Hope you get it sorted. My lad was side swiped in a complete no fault accident
It took me over 2 months to get a satisfactory payout and for it FINALLY to be accepted as a non fault claim. The insurers simply didnt want to know. Even when it came for renewal time suddenly the no claims hadnt been added....
Would I buy a vehicle that carts around a large battery that when new may give a 30 mile range, with all the technology needed to make it work or not work? No. Anything the government and big business is in favour of has got to be a con. Ask yourself would you buy a 3 or 4 year old computer on wheels because that what it is, so who wants to buy your old PHEV or battery car.
Modern car technology is almost unrepairable at reasonable cost so why make it even more complicated. Read more
Nobody has mentioned the health benefits of electric vehicles especially to children as being closer to the ground they breath in more contaminated air. In generating electricity at the powerstation yes CO2 is produced there but our congested cities will remain clear. But like most comments I can't afford a clean electric car.

I suppose it also matters both how long you intend to keep the car and the running costs - when I bought my first car, a 1996-build Micra, I also looked at a new Suzuki Alto from the same time (I was buying in 1998) which only cost £5k at the time at dealers.
I was shocked at the much higher price I would've paid in insurance because like many smaller Japanese makes back then (e.g. Mitsubishi) that didn't have parts factories or a significant presence in the UK/Europe, meaning replacement components were expensive and maintenance prices were above rivals....
