I'm fitting new front pads to my Focus and a friend told me to rub off the black paint to expose the metal underneath the hooks of the backing plates in order to ensure smooth movement where the hooks rest on the brake caliper grooves. This is because the paint can melt causing the brake pads to stick resulting in uneven pad wear.

Personally I use small smears of copper grease, but whatever you use it is rather sticky and soon collects brake dust, tending to clog movement. Can't avoid occasional cleaning up to keep things moving freely.

Some mechanics wont use anything unless they have to, to prevent dust build up, but it doesn't always work out so it has to be used to prevent squealing... ...

So I have a 2009 Nissan Sentra and I don’t drive it too much. It hasn’t been regularly driven in a few months but every month I’ll take it around the neighborhood a little. It hasn’t had an oil change obviously and the oil is pretty old in it. Drove around 5,000 miles with it. I noticed that it has a small puddle of oil under it some times and the oil is very low in it. Does anyone know what could possibly be causing it and how much it will cost to fix. I will be needing my car next month and I can’t afford to get a new one.

I agree. And cyclists. Some years ago I gracefully collapsed on a roundabout which on close inspection (eyes and nose briefly six inches away) appeared to be coated with a film of diesel. A drop of oil every few hundred yards would be of little significance.

Hi, I just recently purchased my first car, and this is also my first manual car I've ever driven. I've had the car now for about a week, I'm learning to downshift at the moment and most of the time I can get away with it, but there has and is still times where I don't match the rpms and I'll get a nudge/Jult from the car. My question is what is that I'm causing harm to and is it significant damage? Also if there's any tips out there for downshifting I'd love to hear them. Read more

I believe the likes of Hamilton and Vettel still change down when slowing for corners, don't think they rely entirely on brakes (and use some momentum to re-charge the battery, which will reverse transmission thrust direction anyway)...

Had an MOTlast week, no pass no fee. Failed on a suspension part. quoted £380 odd to sort. Second opinion Mot same fault but £100 cheaper to fix, moral of story...shop around. Read more

I inquired at both MOT centres why the cover could not be replaced, they both said it was not possible, it was not sold separately. Interestingly neither said I couldn't drive the car but I should really have known this. I wonder how tough other countries are on MOTs.

OP doesn't state what was specifically wrong with the tyre. It may have been directional on the wrong side of the car, or fitted the wrong way round if asymmetric.

Maybe because I've been a lifelong Cricket player, coach, occasional umpire and spectator of the sport, I found yesterday's spectacle the most exciting, captivating and enjoyable sporting event that I have ever witnessed.

That view was well supported by all the congregation of my local pub.....most of whom are dyed in the wool soccer fans ...with whom I've had many a heated discussion regarding the relative entertainment value of the two sports. Having said that, comparing a Newcastle United Premier League match with a major International event is probably always going to be skewed my way!

I have had the fault message come up 'Reduced performance, reduce clutch use' come up, followed by 'Service: Transmission'

Called breakdown out who advised it's a clear clutch and transmission fault, probably sensors that may require them to be rewired, reprogrammed or if gearbox affected then gearbox taken apart and rebuilt!

When it happened revs were all over the place and gear notifications went berserk, but car didnt go into limp mode.

Taken to dealership who are going to look at it under warranty.

Astra 1.6 eco d 19 plate only 5500 miles on the clock, and driven normally not ragged!

Managed to get images of fault messages on dash to as back up evidence.

This has to be a manufacturer fault right? But nothing against Vauxhall for recall on this. Reading lots of people with same issue, so I assume Vauxhall will have to act on this.

Bit concerning on a new car with low mileage! Read more

If its a automatic that uses dry clutches, your not going to get rid of this problem.

That transmission was designed more for long jurnies. If you want to reduce the chance of this type of problem hapening, you should know that this is not a normal automatic. Geting stuck in traffic and keeping the transmission in drive and brake pedal depresed will slip the cluch and create wear and heat....
