Hi all

The orange engine management light on my Corsa 1.2 (2007 petrol) is glowing (but not flashing) and neighbour suggests that it's an emission issue probably requiring a new Lambda sensor. Is this an expensive repair and can it be done quickly? Car is due MOT and I understand that this light on will fail the test. Read more

The yellow engine malfunction light can cover hundreds of different faults . Your neighbour must be psychic if he thinks it’s a lambda fault . Yes , mil
Light on is an mot fail on this year of car.

Hi
So I was wondering if I should take my car to a garage ASAP or not as I’m worried I may have damaged the clutch and/or the gearbox. As I do tend to waffle I’ll try and keep it as simple as possible. I was at a busy roundabout and was at a standstill when I see an opening. I of course go for it in 1st gear, but I was an absolutely idiot when I went to change gear in that I put my foot on the clutch to change it to 2nd but I just forgot to do so (after driving for 4years I’ve never done anything like it so I can’t believe i’ve done such a stupid thing). I took my foot off the pedal and the car bounced around and clearly wasn’t happy about still being in 1st at 15-20mph. There were no horrible grinding noises or anything and it did go into 3rd no problem. I then finished the journey and it seems okay if a little clunky but I don’t know if that’s just psychological rather than the car itself, as I feel like i’ve broken something but I can’t tell what.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated
Many thanks

I doubt that you have done any major damage by over revving the engine as most have a rev limiter fitted. This might explain the bouncing around as engines do stutter at max revs.

While driving slowly on a bumpy country road my civic suddenly stopped, without warning. It has near full dealer service history 62k, was running well and recent MOT had barely detectable emissions.

The garage have stripped the head off and one of the Lost motion assembly springs has snapped and a chunk has become jammed underneath a cam lobe, locking the cam. The force tore the key off the end of the cam, allowing the chain and cam pulley to keep spinning, but destroying the valves. Cylinders 2,3,and 4 had no compression.... Read more

Please excuse my ignorance, what is a lost motion assembly spring?

Hi, we purchased a 64 plate Ford Focus with Arnold Clark just over three months ago., did not pay for extended warranty and Arnold Clark does 2 months as standard.

Yesterday the car would not go into gear, we asked a friend who is a mechanic to take a look and he says the fault is the clutch slave cylinder.... Read more

I don't know the legal technicalities so can't help there.
The slave cylinder went on my 2006 Focus - nice to know Ford have fixed that problem on a eight year younger car.
Whether you have to pay for the repair or AC do, I would think about replacing the clutch too. A LUK clutch kit is around £100. Replacing the slave cylinder and the clutch at the same time could be an idea as it's the labour that costs the money.

Keep us informed on this as I've heard similar problems when using AC.

Hi All,

New to the forum and after a bit of advice if poss.

Last Thursday my daughter brought an Audi A1 1.2 TFSI 64 plate 30,000 miles, which is a CAT N, private sale.
I went with her to look at the car and it's in great condition overall and is lovely to drive, so much so that I had no clue why it had been classed a CAT N! The only issue I could find with the car was that the heater control temperature dial didn't rotate fully and was stuck on the 'HOT' side, so we wasn't sure if the aircon worked or not. But overall the car was very nice for the price.

I did the relevant HPI checks and all checked out fine. On Saturday morning, we MOT'd it and it passed with no advisories.

So, on Saturday afternoon, I decided to have a look at the heater control to see if it was something obvious. After removing the glovebox, I could get to the back of the control panel and it was simply a case that the cable on the back of the temperature control was not fitted properly. Disconnected and re-fitted and now the dial works as it should including ice cold AC!

However.... When I removed the glovebox, I noticed that there was a wire dangling down with a yellow plug. And no passenger airbag!

My question is, as the plug is just dangling, should I see an airbag fault somewhere?? There are no lights or messages showing at all.

Obviously now I've found this, I want to put an airbag back where it should be, but I'm wondering if there are other things I should be looking at now as well? other airbags, missing warning lamps... etc.

I do have VCDS diagnostics, which I bought to sort an issue with my wifes VW EOS , so I think I'll get it connected and see what that tells me.

In the meantime, anyone any thoughts on this?

Many thanks in advance..... Read more

Could a resistor have been substituted for the airbag? I thought for the MOT the warning light had to show and then extinguish.

Hi all,

Just looking for a bit of advice. We bought a 2004 VW Golf (105,000 miles) in late December last year (2018). Within a week or so the engine warning light came on. We took it to Halfords, where it went off by itself. It continued to come on over the next few months, and each time we'd take it to the garage and they'd try various things. We had a warranty through the dealer, so we assumed it would get sorted and weren't to worried, but sometimes they'd fix something, and sometimes the diagnostic revealed too many competing issues so the warranty wouldn't cover it, because they couldn't identify the specific problem.... The car appears basically usable and is an old car with a typical old car type electrical fan issue.

Basically, it is probably to the standard or beyond that a "reasonable" person would expect and has lasted for some time already so I can't see you have any recourse under legislation....

Hello! My car was running fine last night and this morning. Later in the morning, when I tried to start it, the car would turn over and catch, but then die. The little "car and key" icon continues to flash on the dashboard, which means that the anti-theft device (immobilizer) is active.

I've tried the following:
- disconnect the battery and touch the leads together for 20 seconds
- open all doors (hood and trunk), close them all, reactivate the alarm
- try several keys (I have three keys that have been "paired" to this car)
- insert key in door lock, turn to left and hold, turn to right and hold, unlock.

Nothing is working and I can find no information on the Internets about how to disable the immobilizer. It's now at a service station in Brooklyn and will be looked at on Monday, but I fear that they're not going to do anything and I'll have to have it towed again to the dealer. Advice? Read more
