Water in the well.
I had a similar experience with a Rover 75. I spent ages examining all the seals around the boot lid, and rear screen. I even removed the rear light clusters to make sure the seals were ok. Eventually, it turned out to be the extract vent in the rear wing that had become dislodged. All I had to do was to clip it back into position, problem solved. The previous owner had taken it to garage, their solution was to drill some drain holes in the spare wheel well!
It's the first thing I'd look at, and usually involves looking behind the boot interior trim. If it can only be re-fitted from the outside, it requires some disassembly of the rear bumper to get at it.

Bought a car a few years back changed the tyres then not long after noticed big chunks on the sidewalls. Definitely hadn't hit any kerbs, looked like they had been vandalised! Changing the non standard 195/45/17 to 195/50/17 cured the problem. Small margins sometimes but people have a right to ask.
Similarly on a previous post someone else suggested changing a water pump while doing the cambelt was a waste of money--and that their Zafira's wp was still going strong at 140k or so. That's fine but would anyone really want to buy a car with a lack of preventative maintenance? Unfortunately that is what it's like these days: drive it until it breaks. Check out most older cars mot history and you will find a catalogue of advisories which often last for 2 or 3 years.

If you are looking for a CHEAP, mechanically simple car to dismantle, how about a 90's Skoda?
The Favorit/early Felicia was about as non electronic as it gets, with carbs, bolt on wings, wind up windows, etc.
Fellys can be picked up for nearly nothing, a good working example was on sale locally for £195 last week (T reg, one owner from new).
They are also good for learners, as they are "man sized" inside, with pedals spaced a decent distance apart, and the 1.3 (best engine), can turn in 45-50mpg. Read more

Had the same problem with the VW dealership when I asked for dsg oil specs. I was playing "guess the spec" and still didnt manage to find out the spec.
Hey all
I'm after a bit of advice. I've developed a large hernia over the last couple of years and it's got to the point where driving is becoming uncomfortable - especially when i hit a bump.... Read more
I'm glad I don't knowingly have a hernia.I'd focus on getting the health issue sorted or improved before thinking about changing cars. I know how dangerous hernias can be from family and friends history. Good luck.

I’m thinking of changing my car shortly. Currently I have a Peugeot 407 TD, with 97000 on the clock. I commute 40 miles per day round trip, with 35 miles on motorway. Plus , of course, week end mileage.
I can’t make up my mind between a petrol or diesel CRV, a 2.0 diesel Sportage, or a Mercedes C class in either 4 or 6 cylinder form. Budget approx £12500, maybe £15000. Comments please. Thank you. Read more
The C class is by far the nicest to drive but then no SUV is particularly entertaining to pilot so comparing it with the CRV or Sportage depends very much on how much space you need and whether you enjoy a B road blast or tend to be a bit more relaxed behind the wheel. The C class estate with the 2.2 diesel and auto box is a good car but I’d only buy if there’s a good genuine Merc specialist nearby as their main dealers are hugely overpriced for servicing and repairs.
I had a 2014 CRV 1.6 diesel for 4yrs and found it a perfectly good big family wagon. Comfy, spacious and excellent on fuel but totally dull to drive. It suits an auto box but sadly this is only an option with the much thirstier 4wd with the older 2.2 diesel or later 1.6 twin turbo. For your mileage I’d have a nice 1.6 twin turbo diesel auto with a full Honda history.
I’d leave the Sportage, it’s ok but the CRV is a better SUV and the Merc is vastly better to drive. Find one of each and test drive both to see what one floats your boat. Spend the extra to get one with a full main dealer history.
Hello all.
My wife wants to buy a small car, automatic transmission, between 2005 and 2010, under £3k preferably. She is inclined for the smart car, but I've been reading so many bad reviews of it that I'm a bit scared that it's going to be a bad buy. What are your thoughts about this car?... Read more
Thanks for all the trouble, but can you clarify what's the difference between the several automated gearboxes I've been seeing? I'm a rookie regarding automated, always drove manual shift, the only experience I had driving automatic was a rented Smart a few years ago on holidays.
Cheers...

I agree it is an unnecessary model.
Best to have a VW T Roc so long as you avoid the 1.5 TSI EVO models - when cold they kangaroo, read the Audi or VW forums!
They are cheaper too.
I had a factory Oder of a VW T Roc 1.5 and had to reject it! I now have a 1.0 T Roc which is great.
