I suspect that there's a fault with the vehicle body computer , there's a few second hand units on ebay . Does anyone know if by fitting a seconhand unit it will need to be progarmme ?

Thanking you in anticipation Read more

The body control module is part of the security and immobiliser system . Fitting s/h unit will probably result in the engine not starting. The unit will need to be programmed to the car.

New feature on Google maps I found today when you put in directions and set the navigation it now give you a small speedometer readout down in the left hand corner.

Yet to find the map that gives verbal instructions "take the third exit" or in two hundred yards take the next exit. Waze does all that and tells you of problems ahead and usually the reason for them. And it's a free service. Oh and "safety camera" locations and reassuringly where Traffic Police are to be located on your route. Presumably so you can wave as you pass them plotted up.. Last week it told me as I joined a queue Estimated time in traffic eight minutes. It's just superb. Hard to beat that.

Apart from the traffic police locations Google Maps does all that as well for free. Although to be fair most of that I would expect from any half decent sat nav software.

Hi all, I know I should probably see a mechanic about this, but I've received some sound advice from this place in the past so I thought I'd give this a shot first...

Got this fixed. Turns out the breaks had somehow jammed to the back wheel because the car hadn't been driven in a few weeks. Thanks for the responses.

Neighbours friend turned up on Saturday after approx. 100 mile journey. On Sunday evening the battery on their 57 VW Caravelle was completely flat. He said that he had accidently left side lights on.

Sunday evening I put my battery charger on it and immediately it took max 12 amps so we thought we would leave it overnight to gently charge. This morning I suspect the charger tripped out and did not put any charge into battery. Got voltmeter and measured 0V across the battery on no load. Disconnected Neg terminal from battery and still same reading.... Read more

It is wise to test if a new battery will charge on the car. Ive seen batteries that would not get a charge from the alternator just because they were under voltage for half a volt. Once new battery was fitted, after starting the car, alternator would charge giving a 14.3 volt reading.

From personal experience i sugest charging the battery outside the car to see if it charges. I once had a alternator fail wich was short to ground and battery would not charge. Once i charged it out of the car i had to disconect the alt just to get home and have some lights on the road

I see that Luton Airport are putting their minimum drop off charge up to £4. £3 was enough - it just seems they, like many other places, see motorists as an easy cash cow! I can remember when it was free! Read more

"Luton Airport are putting their minimum drop off charge up to £4."

That doesn't tell the whole story. The new charge is for 13 minutes (minimum). The previous charge was £3 for 10 minutes mimimum. As before, each minute or part of a minute over the minimum is charged at £1....

Mark, that lovely engine noise (from a diesel?!) when you select Sport Mode is probably "digitally enhanced" i.e. it's coming from the speaker system.

You criticise "lots of buttons" and they should "concentrate on making a "really nice touchscreen". Personally I think touchscreens should be banned as they require the driver to look away from the road far longer than if you have a dedicated button. For example, BMW have a button for the driver's heated seat which takes a fraction of second to locate visually. Jaguar, by contrast, require you to navigate several menus and then you have to move a slider........by which time you have hit the car in front. Read more

I’m toying with a Jeep Commander, specifically the 5.7 hemi. Has anyone owned or driven one? I fully expect the fuel to be huge- I’m more interested in size and comfort. Is the Grand Cherokee with the same engine any better? Read more

Thanks all. I was specifically thinking about the V8, but I’m not wedded to a Commander. There are a few that come up every so often. I had vaguely thought about the SMax- I have a V70 T5 so know and like the engine. I’m not quite ready for an imported bus just yet. Quite fancy a Range Rover, but am dissuaded by the tales of woe and unreliability, especially at my price point. The XC90 is another thought, but theT6 gearbox is awful so I’d be looking at the 3.2 or 4.4.... I shall keep on looking- my search is not urgent for now...

Hi there, I need the radio code for my car, (2001 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.25), and don't where to get it? With my old Land Rover I just called a dealership and they gave it to me immediately for free, I called a Ford dealership and they said £40? Read more

Despite what you say, it should be possible to release it and pull it out far enough to see the label. there should be a pair of small holes to the right and left of it. You need a pair of small tools to release it - like these: tinyurl.com/y5g8b7wq

Before doing that, have you tried pressing (and holding) buttons 1 & 6, or 2 &6 and seeing what numbers come up? You may see V or M plus six digits - allow the display to cycle through various numbers.

Hi,

After a recent addition to the family, I'm looking to buy something a little more family friendly than my ford fiesta zetec 06 plate. I drive 60 miles a day, so looking for something that doesn't eat fuel, and isn't as difficult to overtake. I've been looking at a Ford focus, and my budget is around £5000.... Read more

On your budget I’d avoid a diesel and aim for something with a simple non-turbocharged petrol motor, preferably of Japanese design.

The Focus is fine with the reliable 1.6 Yamaha designed petrol but it’ll be worse on fuel than your Fiesta. You’ll get 40mpg day to day with a gentle right foot and more on a run but it’s a lovely thing to drive and rarely goes wrong. Do not allow anyone to talk you into the 1.0 Ecoboost, it’s notoriously unreliable and I’d leave the 1.6 diesel at this money as it too has a poor reputation.

A Mazda 3 1.6 petrol is another good option but again it’ll be around 40mpg at best and a bit lacking in overtaking urge. Fun to drive and reliable though.

A Honda Civic 1.8 petrol from 2012 onwards is manageable for just over £5k and will do slightly more to the gallon while offering better performance. You could possibly risk a 2.2 diesel if you’re willing and able to spend a bit more at £6.5k. I wouldn’t buy one any cheaper or the previous shape as the newer DTEC version of the 2.2 diesel is much improved and less likely to suffer EGR or timing chain issues. It will do 60mpg and goes like stink. It matches your requirements but care always needs to be taken when buying a cheaper diesel. Look for full Honda history if possible and make sure you service it at least once a year.
