Hi All

A little advice, I was involved in a minor accident recently when I was entering a roundabout and hit an on coming car in its passenger side.... Read more

Focussed - I am neither an Audi nor a BMW driver. If you read my posts in this thread you'll see I'm in favour of signalling and I do actually signal.

My previous post was a attempt to clarify the law. I'm not surprised if candidates for the driving test are expected to signal. Clearly, advice in the Highway Code (indicated by the word "should") is part of best practice, but it doesn't prove that the force of the law is behind it....

Hi all,

I recently had my MOT where I had both my rear brake discs and pads replaced (Peugeot 307).... Read more

New pads mated to new discs take very little time to bed in because the whole pad is, or should be, in contact, unlike new pads on a worn disc where sometimes only a small section of the pad is in contact until they wear down to the shape of the disc.

Similarly i would not expect much difference at all in the braking, because the front brakes we must assume have been undisturbed and in comparison with the front brakes the rears do very little, and as said by FP for new pads on new discs 250 miles is plenty of bedding in mileage....

Took delivery of brand new i30 hatchback Premium SE this week - lovely car with kit that would cost more than £10k extra on an equivalent Golf etc and lots of radar assisted safety gear. Two things stand out that disappoint though: the radio only operates for 2 minutes after the engine is switched off which is very inconvenient when I'm waiting for my daughter to finish her piano lesson! And the 'Auto Hold' brake function has to be enabled manually for every journey which is a pain as the parking brake is electronic and my wife forgets to set it at start up.

On another note, I traded in a diesel car for the Hyundai as I don't do the miles for a DPF to function effectively. But reading the manual for the Hyundai (petrol) I was surprised to see a reference to the possibility of a 'soot' warning light and advice to drive the car at 2k+ revs for at least 15 minutes! Autohold is brilliant, especially with an automatic. You just come to a stop and take your feet off the pedals, and press the accelerator when you're ready to go....

A recent post about those baby on board signs reminded me of some of the other stickers i’ve seen on cars, my favourite was on a black Toyota Supra overtaking everything in sight:

Who remembers the Not the Nine O'Clock News spoof Fiat Strada advert? "Designed by lasers; built by robots... driven by Italians!" I don't know if tht was ever made into a bumper sticker.
One I do remember from the 80s was something like "This car is paid for - and it's in front of you!"

Hi, My battery needs replacing on my micra. I bought this battery, however noticed the terminal parts of the battery are too thin for the circle metal bit. Can you advise which battery will have the larger top bits?

I understand why people would want to put a baby on board sign in their car but why do they feel it gives them the right to drive light an utter twonk.... Read more

I'd say that 'child on board' more likely is a warning to other road users - parents distracted by their kids mucking about in the back (and worrying about getting to work on time as well) are not, in my view, attentive drivers. I've seen many a minor accident bung up the road for ages as a result.

It's why I also try as much as possible to avoid school pickup/drop-off locations and times when out and about. The same goes for me picking holidays, as I drive to the West Country nearly 300 miles - not only is picking non-school holidays far cheaper, but the roads are far emptier with less of the above type of vehicle on the roads. I also save (according to Google Maps) about 1-1.5 hrs on my journey time.

Got a scratch on my car about 2" long you can get a fingernail in. I've tried the wax pencil thing and all sorts of colour matched polish and an electric polisher to no avail. Anything out there that works? Read more

Is the base colour still there within the scratch? If so, you could fill with a clear lacqeur (clear nail varnish will actually work too) and then sand down with the various grades of wet and dry sandpaper, try to keep it localised to where the scratch is and then a polishing compound such as T cut to finish it.

Others have mentioned wheel bearings, but I had what may be a similar problem with a Mk 2 Focus after it had stood for a while and the disks were jammed. They freed with a jolt when I moved off the first time and thereafter, every time the brakes were applied, especially at low speed, there was a rhythmic noise.

It did eventually go, but it took a while.

A bit more analysis would be interesting to try and find out what is behind this trend. For example it would be interesting to know which if any models are bucking the trend and whether the availbaility of ex-PCP vehicles is a factor. I would also expect that concerns over diesel are affecting peoples' buying decisions. Read more

Your so right. Keep enjoying it until it becomes too expensive to maintain. So many people are caught up in the new car thing, PCP makes this so very easy these days for the private "buyer". Win win for the auto industry & finance companies. If people were to do to maths and look at what that new car is actually costing them over a ten year period they would be stunned. Our consumer society at its very best. I spent 38 years working in the auto industry but I'm still driving a 2001 Berlingo which has been unbelievably reliable suits me fine.
