HJ writes "I don't recommend old cars and certainly don't want to get myself entangled in endless 'practical motoring' type enquiries that take up far too much time and generate no revenue."

Fair enough, a motoring journalist deserves to receive an income for sharing his expertise- but are we to conclude that HJ generates income by recommending certain brands of new cars ... tyres, fuel, etc.? If so, surely any recommendations should be accompanied by a declaration of interest. Read more

Re: "Banging On",
Bangers can be reliable if you choose one with a good reputation and with simple features.
I am in an 'unavoidably shoestring' position: I am self-employed, mobile-based, and cannot realistically do my job without a car (I could possibly manage on a moped in the summer).
However I am very poor, and cannot afford a fixed monthly payment.
I do a lot of urban miles plus a monthly long journey visiting family. 2k miles a month.
Took my last car from 50k miles to 146k.
A breakdown is always a possibility, but rare in my experience, but in these pages we read of plenty of issues with very young cars too. I always have comprehensive breakdown cover (AutoAid).
Current car (14 years old) cost £1000. Recently completed a holiday where I did 1500 miles in a week, with no issues. And it did a genuine 55mpg overall, on petrol.
Is it a Yaris? No, but near enough.

Re : Over the top request, Before even considering a top box or roof rack, check what the manufacturer gives as the maximum weight, some are not very much. Unless you are carrying pillows or duvets, anything more will exceed the weight limit (probably invalidating your insurance too).
I wonder about the size of some top boxes, just because it fits does not mean it's safe or capable of being filled without exceeding the designated weight.

Another find me a car thread but with a few twists..

To set the scene...I have a 2012 Kia Venga Auto. Its a great car, especially for my wife who has restricted hip movement but ridiculously thirsty around town (ie: 23mpg is a common score for us)... Read more

I am well used to the annual merry-go-round that is car insurance; I've just done that, and managed to shave a bit off my renewal quote - well, about £60 actually.

Now comes House and Contents insurance. My insurer's renewal quote is £303, well up from last year's £182. Using the first of the comparison sites I get £303 (though with a different insurer); the next comparison site gives me £242; and the third... £129.... Read more

The other thing to look for is any offer the company may make to get your business. The Co op often have an offer giving £50 of grocery vouchers for new policy holders for both motor and house insurance.

Never used it. I'll stick with the old one. Just try to choose off peak times. Last time I used it early this year it was a superb collection of road works. Bravo ...I think between the m1 m6 etc driving to and from Manchester was possibly marginally more enjoyable than having a leg sawn off sans anesthetic. If I must traverse dreadful roads I'll stick to the A12 you get a better class of boy racer on there.

I currently drive an A4 Avant. It’s coming up to 3 years old and I have to decide shortly whether to keep it for another year with an extended warranty (as I really like the car) or change it. In preparation for this stage. I’ve been considering leasing next time and I received some very helpful advice and tips from a thread on here a few months back.

I’ve decided that if I do change, I’d like to try a V60. Volvo have recently introduced a 190 bhp petrol engined version which on paper suits me fine. I’ve been enjoying weighing up the pros and cons and veering between changing and sticking, but just today a significant development has thrown it all up in the air again. Carwow have a special leasing deal on my precise model and trim at a monthly payment that suits my budget. I’m holidaying at the moment (in China coincidentally) so it’s hard to be considering motoring matters. Would anybody like to chip in? I’d appreciate a few thoughts to mull over on the long flight back home! Read more

I lease my Volvo V40 at the moment, petrol T2 R Design and I like it. It's our second car, my work car, with 80% of the miles being expensed at 45p a mile - which pays for my private mileage. Our main car is a 6 year old Zafira we bought new for 11 grand with the lifetime warranty. Different circumstances lead to different solutions. Each mile in the Volvo has/will cost 22p, in the Zafira 17p so far and falling on average each journey. Next year the V40 will become an XC40 and the main driver, the Zafira become a used Mini Convertible that we will keep for seven years then use for the (now nine year old) boy to learn to drive in

If a dealer is reluctant to offer a test drive, walk away.

That's easy to say, but some just feel intimidated, cant always take someone with knowledge with them and believe everything the salesman tells them, unfortunately.

Getting savvy over car purchase comes with time with past lessons learned. Just a shame the sharks still exist. ...

I am not sure how these work but if you get no previous warning then you should be allowed to pass the first red cross and only subsequent signs should have a live camera, If this is the case then there is no case to answer, the gantries are far enough apart.
