Checking the Govt MOT history site today I see you now need the V5C number to access the certificate. Previous years' history is still there but presumably that will disappear on a rolling basis in future years.

Unless I've missed something this change hasn't been mentioned in this forum so this must have changed very recently.

Its a pity for the used car buyer as it will mean you can't check up on a car and its miles and history before a wasted journey. Read more

Very handy when MOT locations were listed, made avoiding cars that had spent most of their lives in the annual salt baths of Scotland and the far north easier.

Having looked around I came across this site by chance ... basically looking for some advice and this seems to be the perfect place

Just getting my licence done. Only decided to drive as my family was expanding and found it difficult to manage on public transport. I am in my mid 30s and have a toddler and an infant.... Read more

I wouldn’t touch the 3008. The VTi petrol motors are known for timing chain failure among other issues. This wasn’t a good time for Peugeot with poor reliability from both the VTi motors and the popular 1.6 diesels. Again I’d advise going for something Japanese at this money or a Ford Focus or C-max with the Yamaha designed 1.6 petrol.

I was thinking of changing to another diesel car, a bit of an upgrade but with all this anti diesel stuff now I have got cold feet. I think resale values will be low later and wonder what other back roomers think. Read more

Hedge your bets by buying a used diesel - residual values have plummeted over the last couple of years so they're cheap to buy - I'd aim around 2016-17 models which will be Euro 6 and relatively safe from city emission charging schemes.

As for previous months figures, wouldn't this be as much, if not more to do with the impending change to the WLTP emissions tests, whereby manufacturers were desperately trying to offload stock that they knew wouldn't pass the more stringent test or at least give results far higher for the emissions and far lower for the mpg, and thus last years's sales figures were artificially high?

Not only that, but that the figures for June, July and August will be even worse as the date draws nearer to the cut-off date last year of 1st September when the test changed? Read more

Diesel is much more economical than petrol. My previous cars were all petrol, cheap tax on them but when for obvious reasons, I decided to get a bigger car the price of road tax went through the roof. I now have diesel and would never change.
As for pollution what about all the s*** dumped from aircrafts, while flying overhead?
As for electric cars, no thanks. Who wants to wait hours at a charge point for their car to charge, especially if people have appointments, doctors, hospitals etc?
What about lorries, buses etc changing to e type, don't think so?

If that is what is required, then that is what will be provided, after all no point in developing the former without developing the latter!. Why does your post even hint that these two directly related requirements, would not be addressed together?.

Hello guys i have a Hyundai Tucson bought it in April from an authorised dealer i never checked the aircon when purchased as it was in winter... just last week looked for a company to recharge it

This Company did the charge and apparently did the pressure test which they say did pass everything and regassed i drove to Birmingham 100 miles from my house i arrived and it had already finished which i think that was i big leak. According to the garage its a hose between the condenser and the compressor can this be missed on pressure test.... considering i paid £120 and just told sorry you have a fault no refund.... is this right?... Yes and no. Finding leaks on a/c systems can be a real challenge. A vacuum and pressure test may not show an immediate fault. Don’t forget, when the bonnet is down, and the engine is under running conditions, the temp and pressure in the pipe work increases.

Whilst the car was in my garage the wind blew a light aluminium stepladder on to the Hyundai drivers door and put a very small dent in the panel... (about 7 inches down from the window line). To all intents and purposes it looks just like a ding caused by a careless parker opening their door on to mine.

I took the door card off and the dent is behing an inner metal panel... I can reach it with my hand via an opening in the metal inner panel but can't easily get anything on it to push the dent out. There's a patch of black rubbery sound deadening immediately behind the dent so you cant feel the dent... Read more

Hi..Just an update...I purchased a kia soul 2011 diesel auto.. with 17500 miles on the clock for just over 5k... it has five services in the book, three by the main agent. It has been well looked after with genuine history from the ex mobility owner, I have covered 300 miles since the purchase giving it good motorway runs, everything appears fine I even factored in a poss replacment dpf before taking the plunge, but all seems fine so far....its doing a good job for us, without risking silly money...Thanks for everyones advice.

Glad to hear you are liking it so far.

The Soul is a car i feel is unfairly overlooked, offering a great combination of that warranty, reliablity, a high driving position, decent amount of interior space but in a car reasonably compact. I think its unconventional looks might be a factor, but were i in a similar position as you, i'd be having a close look at the Soul myself....

How to maintain the gear box for new cars generally? Read more

Remind me John how long the maker warrants their product? and how keen they are to offer goodwill should their products fail outside of warranty.

Even Toyota went down this never need to change the gearbox oil rubbish on the 5 speed auto on Landcruisers, filling them with WS (world standard) fully synthetic oil which is Dexron 6, however taking a sample of the oil was always recommended on dealer servicing and from what i've read they have now gone back to their previous sensible advice of changing the oil, remember LC's are expected to last 30 years or more without a gearbox change...100k kms springs to mind but i could be wrong on the mileage....
