The moving stories told by actual participants were the most revealing part of the whole commemoration ceremony. I supposed there are some on the forum, like me who are of an age that their parents were involved in the war effort with the armed forces. My Father was in the RAF from 1932-1958. His elder brother was in the Army. Royal Signals attached to the Green Howards, and he went ashore with the first wave on D Day. He survived but hardly ever some about it..We managed to glean snippets of information over the years, usually when we had a family gathering and drink was taken. Being Scottish that was often and gregariously. My father always said, when asked by me or others in the family, that too many good men died to glorify the subject. For me the most impressive aspect is the quiet dignity with which they did their duty and accepted it as part of the process of war. Then modestly refused to glory in the victorious outcome. I am sorry to say we shall not see their like again. For my Father and other uncles, and all who served during the war. Thank you.

Nice sentiments chaps. It is difficult to impart and describe the strength of character displayed by most of that generation. Thankfully the following generations have not had to endure such trials so cannot fully understand them. Life moves on and so do people but I hope we never forget this lesson that was handed down to us by our forebears.

Driver assist setting shows ticked in box / sign on dash window shows car symbol with OFF below, I have tried several ways to change so it will show ON at the dash no joy as yet, plus I have noticed when applying the footbrake it feels as though the brakes are 'grabbing' and releasing quickly Read more
A pulsing feeling from the brake pedal could also be warped discs?.
That could be it, in which case new discs is a simple fix, I thought it unlikely with an MOT pass in March but may have warped since then.
I once had a Peugeot which had the symptoms of warped discs or oval rear drums. Replaced discs and had drums skimmed, then discovered the alloy wheels were distorted and they bent the rear drums when you tightened the wheel studs: until you did that no run-out or ovality at all.
2012 slk has the rear led strip turn signal strip with an intermittent double speed. Can this be fixed or do I bite the bullet and get the whole light unit replaced as Mercedes recommend? well over £200...worse with the dreaded vat. Read more
Those flasher units are for when you convert your Allegro (or other classics) to led bulbs . I’ve done this on a friends MGB.
My wife has just had her Vauxahll Adam MoT'd by Halfords - it was a freebie, an offer she saw a while back on Money Saving Expert. It came back with two advisories a leaking rear shock absorber and non aligned brakes. She was quoted a price to fix the shop absorber. She has the car serviced at our local garage, so she took it there to get prices and advice on the advisories. They have inspected to car, including putting in on the rolling road and found neither of the advisories. So one garage says there are issues, one not and a bit frustrating. Is it worth taking next steps ? Read more
A shock absorber is either leaking or it isn't, no opinion needed, get under and have a look for yourself.
On the other hand what are non aligned brakes when they're at home? Maybe the brake roller picked up a slightly lower figure one side, which maybe genuinely points to the brakes needing a proper service...note not new pads or discs or anything, but a real brake service, ie strip clean lubricate exercise the pistons and reassemble.
The setting in driver assist is ticked as enabled, the symbol on the dash is showing OFF, after trying a few setting changes nothing alters the symbol to ON on the dash I have run out of ideas.any help appreciated
Am not normally slow off the mark but for the life of me I cant get the fuel filler open on a Cooper S on a 57 Plate
I thought it could automatically be opened whilst doors were unlocked ?? Is there are a manual switch inside instead ??... Read more
Spot lights will need to be wired into the high beam circuit. Make sure you use a suitable relay for the lights. Not a difficult job. Any competent sparky should be able to do this in 2 hours or less.
I'd love to see the results of indpendent testing done on otherwise identical cars that 'can take' ultra-fast charging - one on fast charge, the other on a far lower 'trickle' charge.
Then see how long until the batteries either die in sufficient numbers or their ability to hold charge reduces enough that the mileage reduces by a significant amount (to 2/3rds or less?).
I wonder how they are dealing with the problem of heat disapation from fast charging, especially in summer? And that (at least for household rechargable batteries) fast charging is normally less efficient because of this. Wasting energy in the name of convenience? Read more
Good news for the dealers who have to replace batteries that have been fried! Thinking up joined not, I fear.
Loner Arranger - correct. The insurers did what you paid them to do. They paid your claim and gave you a car until they did so and for 7 after that. You should have been shopping around for a replacement as soon as you knew the car would be written off so you could make the purchase when the money came through. It's not their job to ferry you around at your own convenience. Read more
You will of course, need to keep that 5s plugged in permanently, because the battery only holds enough charge for 5 minutes use.
For an extra tenner, you could buy a brand new budget smart phone with no battery issues.
Re 17 reg Zafira. Have you tried asking Vauxhall for a service history? Also is there a recall on the Heater matrix? Read more
Cars used for short journeys - your archetypal 3,000 miles per year - will not get the oil hot enough to burn off moisture and spirit contamination. With petrol cars the cold start fuel enrichment contaminates the oil with unburned petrol making it past the piston rings, likewise with oil burners, unfinished DPF regenerations contaminate the oil with diesel.
So yes, change your oil annually if you intend to keep the car long-term. If you're a high mileage driver - change it between services. These extended service intervals are to make their cars more financially attractive by keeping lease costs down - they do nothing for engine longevity - which most manufacturers care nothing about other than lasting the warranty period.
