An interesting article but I must correct you on speed limits. On english roads, and I assume Wales and Northern Ireland, the speed limit for some commercials is 50mph. In Scotland, the speed limit for these vehicles is still 40mph, except for the A9 between Dunblane and Inverness where it is also 50mph on single carriageway sections. I understand this limit is still experimental as there were far too many accidents with, primarily cars, trying to overtake in silly places through frustration, on this 130 mile section. Read more

Plodding Along

HGV drivers are without a doubt the worst and most danherous drivers on UK roads. I regularly drive from Manchester to Bristol on the M6 and M5.
In the lengthy 50mph zones I generally do 52 in the insode but the majority of HGVs overtake me doing what must be 56 or 57. If they cannot overtake they sit inches off my back bumper intimidating me to go faster. They sit behind each other literally inches apart. Do they seriously, as supposedly professional drivers, not realise how dangerous their behaviour is to everyone else?

I noticed in Australia in January that on 4 lane motorways HGVs were resteicted to the 1st 2 lanes. We need that rule here. When a truck in the 2nd lane is overtaking a truck in the 1st lane there is often a truck overtaking him in the 3rd lane leaving all faster moving vehicles to just one lane. Very dangerous!
We need to get most teucks off the roads and onto trains, there are far too many of them out there slowing everyone else down and causing fatalities by their negligent driving. Discuss.

Looking at installing a new shower, has anyone had any experience of using Panels which apparently do away with the need to silicone to waterproof seal. Panels seem very popular in the plumbers merchants Read more

concrete

These preformed panel kits are ok. They do the important job of accommodating the differential movement between the shower tray and the abutting joint down onto the tray sides. This has always been the weak spot for shower trays. If the tray is not solid and is not bedded properly then it moves when stepped into. This then distorts the joint between the tray and wall tiles. Even silicon sometimes will not make up for a poorly installed shower tray. They have there place these panels and are easily installed or removed or replaced.

So I'm hoping someone really kind could advise me on this, I have a 59 plate 118d which I was driving and started to smell a burning rubber smell it was the pad so i got a new caliper from a reputable BMW breaker. After having the caliper fitted my brakes are now soft to the floor unless pumped? Was told mechanic had manually bled the system 3 times and was determined there's no air in there? Can anyone advise I would be very thankful. Read more

It's either air still in the system or the used caliper is faulty, ie whatever adjusting mechanism is in use (if any) isn't working, or the caliper isn't the right one for the vehicle...ie rear caliper designed for vented discs now operating on solid (narrower) discs or some other issue like this.

For a normal car like this, no way would i recommend anyone fit used brake parts, the breaker car might well have been written off due to poor brakes, properly reconditioned or even new brake calipers are fairly cheap for common vehicles anyway for the usual sources....

So I said to my wife early next year I’ll her a new car. We’ve had her Toyota Yaris from new (14 plate) and she wants something with 5 seats and maybe a little bigger. Either that or buy another reliable Yaris.

Here’s the line up:
- Fiat 500x
- Honda Civic
- Mazda 2
- Mini 5dr
- Nissan Juke

We like the 500x but it sure on reliability, Civic is safe bet, Mazda 2 fine but same size as Yaris, Mini is good but parts and servicing is a bit expensive, love the Juke cos of its higher ride can get a good spec for money.

We have up to £11k to spend, don’t want anything older than 2015, we have two kids (5 & 6) to ferry round with the odd extra child from school. Petrol only cos it’ll only do short journeys.

There are other cars but won’t something reliable and not to big (as we have an estate car;mine) also car might not be used for a few days so we want it to start.

Any help would be most helpful.

Thanks

Looks like that will be a direct competitor to the upcoming Mazda CX-30 as well. Both very good looking. I'll reserve judgement on how it drives though, given the (related) Hyundai i30 Fastback in non 'N' form wasn't brilliant on the ride quality and wasn't available on anything below 17in wheels and (low profile) tyres. Mazdas have an excellent 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission (I drive a CX-3) but Kias have a 7-speed dual clutch automated manual. This would be a deal breaker for me, unless their transmission proves to be more reliable than VW's DSG or Ford's recently abandoned Powershift.
