I've starting persuing used cars recently, and have noticed some traders have tacked on an on-average £149 'admin fee' to their available stock. Maybe it's just me but that's a red flag to avoid, espcially if it's money for nothing.

If it's a legitimate cost, just sew it into the cost of the car. I don't expect to buy £50 of groceries at the supermarket, and be charged an admin fee at the checkout, and even less so when buying a five-figure car!... Read more

Some comparison sites add on the cost of a 1 way hire after the booking has been made, so appear cheaper, others add an admin fee in tiny little figures to appear cheaper.. none mention the cost of the hire company cdw/ldw waivers and only 1 (holidayautos) offers a clear if overpriced waiver policy)

I'm sure this is encouraged by comparison sites which list things in price order. It's vital to appear at the top of the list, by whatever means.

For many years I’ve used Ebay to sell on items but their fees and those of Paypal are now just too high so with some reluctance I decided to give Gumtree another go. In the past I’ve had less success with it.... Read more

I use Gumtree for stuff that can't be posted including several cars which generally have sold quite quickly. We've also bought several iphones which I wouldn't buy at a distance. Lots of dodgy phone sellers around, but if you only buy where the seller has the charger, lead and original box and meet them at their home address, it has proved successful.

Will use ebay for things that can be posted as you have a wider audience. Sold some roof bars recently for a good price because I was offering to post. So many sellers won't post such items as they seem to think it's too much bother.

I receive my Freeview signal via an external TV aerial tuned to the Talconeston transmitter. The aerial is connected via a coaxial cable to a Panasonic DVD recorder linked to a Samsung flat screen TV both bought new 9 years ago.... Read more

Cast your votes now please for the one feature you would like to be able to operate surreptitiously with your left foot! Cars often used to have buttons and switches placed down below (the Austin-Morris dipswitch; the Ford wash-wipe; the least said about Korean/American parking brakes the better), and with the onward march of hybrids and all-electrics, it cannot be long before we are forced into two-pedal motoring for good. For 90% of the time in this imminent motoring future, the left foot will be idle (HJ-approved parking manoeuvres notwithstanding), so let's find it something to do!
My vote goes to a raucous auxiliary horn for those all-essential moments when only a 200 dB blast of Dixie, La Cucaracha or Colonel Bogey can adequately communicate the motorist's displeasure to a wayward driver - plus the "collateral damage" of everyone in a ten mile radius! Read more

Our C Crosser, continues to amaze me, especially since I was not expecting much from, but 5 years since "new to me", it is a pleasure to drive, really, handles ridiculously well, precise gear change, tidy handlling, corners well, no excessive body roll, and amazingly practical, endless university runs (about to start again with younger ones going up), still gets regular use of the small folding 6/7 seats because although all grown up we still like to do things as a family age range 16 - 25), and its better than taking 2 cars despite the compactness, I could go on... suffice to say that it has been a real surprise. (yes I know it is really a Mitsubishi Outlander)

But most of the time mrs g is using it as her daily commute, it is really rather big, heavy and thirsty for that, and it' s a diesel, we would love to get away from Diesel. Whislt we still need something big ehnough to support university runs to halls and back, something just a notch smaller would be and we could probably give up on seats 6/7. Wanting to get away from diesel but still wanting to enjoy the practicalities of an SUV, I have been interested in the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid, but feel set down by the UK motoring media including HJ who haven't really given it (specifically the Rav 4 hybrid) the time of day.

Real MPG is a despectable low 40s (most of the time the C Crosser gets less than 30, in fact to be truthful really mid 20s except for on long motorway runs which it sees only a dozen or so times a year) SUV's are massively popular, but generally diesel, and we all know Diesel is NOT the future therefore you would think a Hybrid SUV whould get plenty of attention.

But I can't see a review of the Hybrid Rav 4 on HJ? and when googled it, I found Autoexpress review gave it 2 stars with a summary "Unless you’re a die-hard hybrid fan or need to save a few pounds on your Benefit in Kind bills, then the conventional diesel RAV4 makes more sense than the petrol-electric model" NO!, it doesn't... what if you want to get away from Diesel? I am not a die hard hybrid fan (i've never had one) but I want to know how it performs in that specific context. I like the fact that apparently it can do first mile on 100% electric, I want to know more... a run to our local station is 4.5 miles round trip, how will it perform on that when dropping off and picking up our teenagers? the C Crosser is terribly thirsty on such short trips.

getting only 2 stars out of 5 makes me wonder if the autoexpress team know why such a car is even on the market?

How about HJ, come on HJ please review it, i really trust your rviews. On the wider topic, presuming the UK buyers love affairs with SUVs continues, I would love to see HJ cover the topic of what we should consider if we want to move away from Diesel? what choices are out there? how do they compare?

I stand corrected. I thought gb had had a diesel Mk 1 but maybe it was one of his gas conversions

Correct, it was indeed supplied new with LPG, what killed them was the VED changes, from March 06 every one of those 2.4 Outlanders went into top VED bracket....

As SLO76 said, the experience with older cars is quite different:

In 2014 I was selling my 2007 Volvo S40 2.0D SE which had covered 60k and was in excellent condition. WBAC valued it at £3050 which I thought was scandalous. After a couple of weeks I went to see a local non franchise car dealer who mainly deals with used premium models up to 5 years old, but occasionally has a few mint older models too. We agreed a £1000 fee for them to advertise it, put a 12 month warranty on it and sell it on their forecourt. It did take a couple of months to sell, but I ended up with £4495 cash, meaning they sold it for £5495....

If this goes the way other French purchases have gone, there will be a quiet movement of intellectual property rights to France, followed by the newest technology and then an excuse will be made to shut down 90% of the UK side of the company.

That is exactly what happened to a major UK firm I worked for, 150 years of UK excellence gutted and shut down within a couple of years of the French taking control; from 17 sites across the UK, to one token site in the home counties. Read more
