I have a motorbike that was first registered in the UK in 2003, In 2005 I moved to Spain and took the motorcycle with me, to comply with Spanish Law the motorbike was re-registered in Spain and given spanish plates, ie Import tax paid, V5 handed over to the spanish Gestoria, and now have all legal docs in Spanish.
I now have moved back to the UK 2016, and the motorcycle has come back too,... Read more
I think you may be right there Rob, the only problem with that is if the gestoria didn't return the V5 slip to DVLA and register it as being imported I could owe 10years of back tax for not putting a SORN on it. :(
But yes that could be the way to go...
Tailgating seems to get ever more common and aggressive. Our local paper has a weekly magistrates’ court roundup. Whilst typically around half the cases involve motoring offences I have never seen one involving tailgating. Are people prosecuted for tailgating and if so how many?... Read more
The tailgating in France is endemic as anyone who has driven over here will tell you. It's got so bad I've just bought a dash cam to fit that has a dedicated rear camera.
I'm going to print out a small notice to put in the rear window -...
The optician has told me that Crizal lenses are more effective than an anti-glare coating at night. As they are not particulrly cheap I was wondering if anybody had any experience and/or comment about them? Read more
Thanks RT. Is there an optician in the forum ?
My Vauxhall Corsa 1.7CDTi (2008 model) starts and runs perfectly when cold. However if the engine is anywhere between mildly warm and normal operating temperature and is stopped and restarted within a minute or two the engine sounds horrendous. This is so bad I immediately shut the engine down. Wait a few seconds and try again the engine starts and runs perfectly. The engine has done 78,000 miles, serviced every 15,000 miles, timing belt replaced, by Vauxhall at 60,000 miles. It uses no oil, and has no visable smoke from the exhaust. Can anybody let me know if they have come across this problem on a diesel engine before I takeout a second mortgage and hand it over to Vauxhall.
Many Thanks Emma. Read more
Dear gordonbennet,
Thank you for your prompt reply. Firstly just a bit more info about the servicing of the car. I have always serviced the car, apart from when it was still under manufacturers warrenty myself using genuine Vauxhall oil (fully synthetic 5W/30) and genuine filters....

Many thanks in advance as she's giving me ear ache about it!

I was about to purchase the above Honda from a private seller when my wife suggested a car check just as a precaution. The car was in beautiful condition with full service history, just what we were looking for. The car check threw up the car was a Cat D Insurance right off in December 2013. As a private sale was the seller obliged to advise the buyer the car had been written off. Lucky escape for us. Read more
Category D isn't a write-off
- Category D is for the most lightly damaged cars, or those which were stolen and recovered after the owner had been paid by the insurance company. The official description of a Category D car is one that has suffered accident damage that would cost less to repair than its value....
Any advice I have an Ldv pilot and I'm toying with the idea of putting a transit banana engine in it but the part I'm struggling to work out is the engine mounts the rest I can get sorted I no il need the new box aswell but I can get a deal with both thanks for the help Read more
First you need to make sure it will fit and that the sump is the right shape, if you can then suspend the engine in the compartment in the correct position you will be able to see what is required.
You will need the mounts from the transit engine, fit them to the engine and then look at their position above the chassis, if you are lucky you may be able to fabricate some brackets that will use the original mounting points, if not weld a length of angle iron from two suitable points to sit the mountings on....
Have a MK5 golf 1.9 tdi up for sale. A person just came to view it, liked it and then asked for the key to start it up. It started up but it sounded really rough once revved after 30 secs or, almost like the timing was off or it was off a cylinder (never sounded like this before) It idled fine, so I let it sit for a few mins once the person had left.
I then went to rev it and it sounded normal again, I took it out for a spin and just drove like it normally did. The car has been sitting in my garage for a few days so I put it down to the battery being weak, but just got it plugged it and all of the glow plugs had indicated a fault.... Read more
Thanks for that. Changed the oil and filter today and added the Wynn treatment. I says that it lasts the life of the oil and is oil soluable, so hopefully that will cure it! Cheers

Warranties cover manufacturing electrical and mechanical defects. They do not cover components that have failed due to wear and tear. I notice that the examples they give are for an oxygen sensor that has a circuit fault. If this has occurred because of the way the cable was routed and has chafed on the body causing a circuit fault then I suppose the manufacturer could honour that as warranty, even after this long. But I'd be amazed if he would accept a warranty claim for an engine which has a considerable amount of wear, which yours would have after given its age and mileage.
80,000 miles is low mileage for a 12 year old car, and consequently far more likely that the engine has fair wear. The only good thing about low mileage is the digits showing on the odometer. This makes cars attractive and easy to sell due to buyer's lack of understanding of them. Low mileage means short journeys, and short journeys mean lots of wear. High mileage means the opposite.
Good luck with the dealer, but don't get too surprised if they don't accept the claim.
