Hi guys,

First a bit of background. I recently had the conrod through the block issue common to the BXE VAG engine. (big end top shells were pitted) The head was undamaged and I sourced a replacement block which I dismantled (not knowing history of block) and cleaned and plan on a light hone (flexhone) & re-ring pistons with Goetze rings as the cylinders are well within spec as regards wear/taper/out of round. I've measured all cylinders/journals with the proper tools and all are well within specs per VAG. ... Read more

I think 20 grams of aluminium is a bit too far. I mean the one conrod bolt is 20 grams and it would be 3x that volume for aluminium.

I'm thinking I'm just going to buy a used 79.480 piston with good skirts which will match the other pistons. I understand what you are saying about balancing Cyd but there are no good shops for that kind of work around where I live and I got a crazy quote when I enquired this morning and thats 3 hours away.

I checked the original crankshaft for run-out and its good and I will be using the original con-rods in their original bores. I'll give them all a weigh up before installation.

I'm think this should be sufficient.

Can I fit electronic ignition to my 1953 Morris Minor with a 918CC Side Valve and motor and positive earth?

Railroad.

I'm not talking about modern coil pack types. Remember cars in the 1980s and 90s? Most had an electronic ignition system which was either inductive pulse or Hall effect. The coil used in those systems differed from a standard coil only by the number of turns in the primary windings, and consequently the resistance. There were three types.

12v standard - 3 ohms
12v ballast - 1.2 ohms
12v electronic - <1 ohm

All three looked the similar, but they were not the same. Round or square. Oil filled or dry. All ignition coils are step-up transformers and all work the same way.

I reiterate. If you are going to fit an electronic ignition system, especially one that has variable dwell, then you would benefit also by replacing the coil for one designed for electronic ignition.

Hi
I’m sure many will quite rightly say this is one I just have to sort in my own head but in brief my dilemma is – I’m looking to spend up to £15k on a car. I need big boot – 520+ litres.
Should I buy a higher mileage ‘quality’ car (ie – 2011, Merc 220cdi estate, 60k miles, FMSH, £15k) or go for a low mileage ‘cheaper’ car – ie 2013, Kia Sportage 27k miles, FSH and Kia warranty to 2020 – £14k )?
I don’t do many miles – about 5-8k a year.
My head says go with the ‘quality’ car – 60k is nothing for a Merc. My more sensible head says – go with a Skoda Octavia/Superb estate – it’s not as if I’m dong 20k plus miles a year….
Stupid query I know but if anyone has an opinion – I’m all ears.

I had exactly this dilemma last year. I had always wanted a "quality" car but never had the money to buy a half decent one - until now.

Like you I looked at a newish Merc estate as I needed one for carrying the dog but didn't need a diesel as I only do @10k miles per year. I was doing all right with the Merc until I saw the servicing and running costs and figured that the money was better off in my pocket than in the pocket of the local main dealer....

Is this the case.
Just took a school mini bus into a tyre fitting depot and had two front tyres fitted and front wheel alignment adjusted.
On the journey back I momentarily took my hands off the steering wheel, and the bus started to veer left. Quite sharply.
Only steered straight while holding the wheel. I phoned the depot and they said if it wasn't doing it holding the wheel it was adjusted correctly.
I thought that even without holding the wheel, the bus should drive dead straight. Isn't pulling to one side the reason why we would get it adjusted in the first place.
Was it all spin, or are they right? Read more

2 new tyres? bedded in yet? Brakes free both sides?

As above, if its pulling left constantly and you can feel yourself compensating for that via the steering wheel then something isn't right....

I have just wrecked my automatic car from a near standstill. While slowly turning in a cul de sac, it shot across the road without warning, hit two other cars and crashed into a wall writing itself off. It had done two little surges before but I managed to control them. I am not yet dotty, but in my seventies. I have driven automatics for twenty years after my left ankle was fixed to some extent with screws and I felt that ther was not enough flex in the ankle to control a clutch.

Now I am negotiating for a used Nissan Note automatic and am quite worried. Under no circumstances can I give up driving as I live in the country. My life has come to a stop for the last ten days while the insurers work it all out. ... Read more

In my experience most elderly drivers involved in accidents were driving an auto.

That's proof of what exactly?...
