May 2016
I have purchased a 1 Series BMW last week, 2008 model and after a few days use I noticed an uneven noise on the engine which it seems may be the timing chain issue (these were temporarily repaired free by BMW but the period closed end of 2015. There is also apparently a need to replace the turbocharger.
What are my options - given the above two problems, which could be costly down the line, I am thinking I should return for refund - the car was advertised as having full service history (and I was told this verbally), and I was also told verbally that "1 series are chain driven and won't ever need replacing". However the car was only stamped last for 2012. I would have thought that had it been serviced during the recall period, this would have been picked up and the chain replaced. I am not totally sure but it seems to me that the car has at the very least been misrepresented, and I ought to be able to get my money back. I know that the dealer is not responsible for manufacturer faults, but it seems clear the car has not been fully inspected by mechanic before it came to me, and I was told I would have no problems. This is not an old banger either, and was not cheap.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me. If so, would be highly appreciated. Read more

Sorry, can't do Keycodes for Ford "V" serial numbers, you need access to the Ford database to be able to decode them.
Ford Main Dealer or there are sellers on Ebay who claim they can do them for a small fee.
- Reluntantly I must part with my Mini Cooper S, JCW kit, 2007, Chilli pack, Astro Black,6 speed, Turbo charge, 22000 genuine miles. Off road SORN, in storage for 2 years, wrapped in blankets, battery disconnected. Unable to ship to my new location. Last time checked only needed computer reset, started 1st time, I appreciate he will require attention, MOT, service etc. Please can anyone give me a realistic valuation, as I have been scared rigid with horror predictions of problems, insulted by valuations and cannot let him go for silly price.
If this is a genuine car and not a scam, I would get it serviced and MOT'd and advertise it for top money. Your average buyer is not that clued up about car layups and will be mesmerised by the low mileage, if the missing history is mentioned just say it was off the road for a while in the dry, if it runs ok it will sell easily, not quite as well as a 22k one with a fsh but will sell ok

Thanks for your comments and advice.
Hi,
Apologies in advance for the long post but I thought it's best to put everything I know about the issue in the hope that someone has an idea what my problem might be!... Read more
Hi, Thanks, The air intake pipes all look OK from what I can tell. Looking at the EGR the pipe that comes off it (exhaust side not engine side) has a small amount of oil around the far end of it, but I'm guessing there's not much of a way to check it without taking it off and having a look inside. I'll look at getting a new fuel filter too, and I might run through a bottle of diesel injector cleaner too and see if that helps. I've been only using decent (as far as diesel goes, the pricier shell or esso stuff) fuel but as I say I've only had it a month and it may have been on Tesco's cheapest for the last 10 years for all I know.
How do lads, been a while since I rapped at ya. Hyundai Santa Fe needs four 225 70 16 tyres. Local back street tyre man, with whom I'm quite friendly, said go and choose something on mytyres.
He had a look and watching over his shoulder I thought I saw prices in the 40 - 50 ££ range. Looking at home they averaged at £70 -80 ... Read more
Take a look at Cooper Discoverer a/t. I have these on my Freelander2. There is 10mm of tread when new, and after 20,000 miles, I have 7mm on the right front and 6mm on the left. I am well pleased with that, and have put a pair on the rear now, to replace the Goodyears. Oh yes, and they look knobbly enough for most people.
Have just purchased this car from auction. When you check the oil cap there is dark grey colour greasy substance, and a further check shows no water droplets. There is no way that the water loss can be explained. There is no high pressure in the pipes engine seems to run well, no smoke from the back. Very distressed as just bought it & just changed the oil. Can anyone help? Thankyou Read more
I've had two cars, one petrol one diesel, which lost coolant but had no evidence in the radiator expansion chamber, no "mayonaise", no oily residue, no evidence of exhaust on the "sniff test" - both were gradual head gasket failure, one of them developing over 12 months to become terminal and requiring the engine/transmission to be rebuilt.
In both cases, an engine stripdown showed an initially small blow across the head gasket where the coolant was going into the combustion chamber - as the flow was only that way, it's presumed it occurred each time the engine cooled down....
Hi all,
Taking kids to swimming today, I hit a pothole and the suspension 'broke' somehow. It felt initially like one of the rear shocks had gone: every bump in the road left the car bouncing from side to side and it felt like the suspension was bottoming out on speed bumps. When I got there (was only half a mile from where it broke) I saw the nearside rear wheel arch was practically sat on the wheel.... Read more
I think most air systems are similar, so here's a Land Rover Discovery guide..
We have not been able to source a towbar from Honda or other manufacturers which is capable of powering the fridge and recharging the caravan battery for our HRV. Honda state ‘that the capacity of the alternator with the HR-V is not high enough, meaning that during towing …….. the caravan can drain the battery’. So check carefully before you buy an HRV for caravanning and you may avoid the expensive mistake we made. For us the new HRV is not suitable as a tow car. Read more
A quick update. We had our HRV booked in for the towbar to be fitted on 31 st May, but today, 26th May, we have been informed by our Honda dealer that the electric kit for the towbar is not available. They have placed the electrics on back order and it will not be available until mid July, if then.
I have emailed Honda's Managing Director, again expressing our frustration and dissappointment....
Hello first time poster
I have a new 5 month old 4K mile q7 it developed a fault last Sat 30th April key problem it would let me in car but not start (8 hours for Audi road side assistance to recover) Have any new q7 owners suffered the same/similar problem?
Audi have it up and running on temporary fix but are stating it is temporary and fault could occur again.
Any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Read more
Sorry friend, I don't think the HJ forum is the natural habitat of owners of new Q7s! You might be better off with an Audi forum. Hope you get it sorted, preferably at Audi's expense.
Thinking long term, is it bad for the ac system to run it on maximum cold and max fan speed (manual controls) or is it a good thing?
I know it's bad NOT to run the AC system as seals can dry out, but just curious about the effects of doing the opposite. Like everyone here, want to maintain my car and avoid future bills where possible/expand my knowledge.... Read more
