Ciaran - good to hear that kind of report.

Regular short runs probably means that the engine is always hot though rather than a few runs from cold every day- does that make a difference?...

I have spent almost 5 months trying to sort out my missfireing Subaru Forester ST 51plate, i have taken it to three diferent garages and all came bake with the same answer of "theres nothing wrong with it, according to the computer, but i think it may be your head gaskets, do you want me to book it in?"!

it got to a point on friday were i'd had a gut full of driving a very sick car.... Read more

Glad you were successful. On many modern cars it's almost impossible to find the plugs without special tools, never mind change them.

On my gf's car this code appears after about 15 miles.

The car starts and runs fine. Air filter is new. The plugs are the correct shade of brown, I've checked the MAF sensor which is perfectly clean and fitted new lamda sensors (2).... Read more

Looking for a new car in around 4 months time, and have decided that the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso fits our needs.

But the VAT kills it. NO WAY am I handing HMRC around £5000 on a brand new model. Is this really how you are supposed to buy new clean, low energy cars etc etc. It's a complete rip off. It won't be happening.... Read more

anyone planning to pay 30,000 pounds for a car can afford to pay one-sixth of that in VAT (the OP said 5K in VAT, so that's 25K for the car plus 20percent or one-fifth = 30K list).

I'm sure you can get a discount of 16.66 percent on a 30K Citroen C4 Grand Picasso - that's up at the luxury end of that model range. That's effectively zero VAT. They're still going to be paying eye-watering amounts of money in depreciation....

I have just experienced the all too common broken coil spring on the front suspension. Scrapped a good tyre in the process as the car was moving at the time.

Question, should I replace the shock absorbers at the same time as renewing the coil springs? Read more

If there is nothing wrong with the shocks, then no need to replace. The only thing is that the shocker has to be removed to replace the spring.

Check and replace the battery, particularly if over 4 years old. Make sure you perform a BSI reset when you disconnect the battery.

Hi, been going through a late mid life crisis and have the urge to own Brera , done alot of review reading, always loved the GTV, then found the Brera, had a look at a couple of dogs, then find one that ticks all the boxes, high miler diesel but good history, took it for a drive onlyto be disappointed with the braking characteristics, initially put it down to sitting on a forecourt, but after 30 minutes they didn't get any better, very hard brake pedal with no power assist feel to them at all, was on a relatively quiet B road, so thought lets wind it up and try an emergency brake, after what felt like ages they car came to a controlled stop, appreciate it is a heavier car than the Megan I was going to chop in, but the brakes did not instill any confidence.

Car had just had an mot 3 days previous and passed with flying colours, but going by brakes operation I gave the car a wide berth , a very sad wide berth.... Read more

I've only had this happen once, but it MAY be worth checking.

After having numerous garages failing to find a similar fault, I eventually traced it to an internally collapsed brake servo hose. When the hose was relaxed, the car would brake fine, but after that first push, the hose was effectively flat inside, so no vacuum. ...

I am neurotic. A number of cars I see have stop start engines for fuel efficiency. Does this result in problems for time taken moving off from, for example, traffic lights and more importantly emerging from a junction after being stationary ?

Are there differences in the technology used by different manufacturers ?... Read more

The battery in my Touareg is hidden deeply under the passenger seat - but there are terminal posts under the bonnet for such purposes - and for operating the supplied tyre compressor.

Friend bought an XF a few months backand has covered 7000ish miles and the tyres (which were only about 4.5mm) are now down almost to the tread wear indicators. I noticed this the other day when we met after a while and suggested he replace ASAP, but he is going to wait a bit.

Daft or what, and he can afford the new piteelis he wants at £151 a corner.... Read more

Maybe his car is one of those where Jaguar are giving the lucky owners a fresh set of tyres under a recall. If he is on 18" tyres then there is an exchange programme presumably because the factory fitted tyres were less economical than those used for the CO2 figures.

Yes I agree, It's probably not been over stressed in it's life and knowing the yanks it probably had short(ish) intervals between oil changes.

The VAG PD engine is a tough unit, I know someone with one that has done 200,000miles and they really give it a hard life.
