I need a new AC compressor for my vehicle. It is not registered in UK/EU so I can't do a registration look-up which all the car parts websites want to identify your vehicle.

I think I have a good handle on the specifc model, and can provide a VIN if required, but is there a good way to make absolutley sure I am purchasing a compatible part before going ahead?... Read more

If Concrete's thread about models' reliability refers to a certain 'Index of Reliability', then I went and had a quick (refresh) look.

Some of it IS a bit odd though - I mean, I wouldn't have thought there were vast numbers of Chevy Kalos and Tacumas running about - maybe their owners don't make claims because they hardly ever use their cars?
Similarly there's not many Rover 25s about these days.... Read more

I checked the top mounts for wear by taking hold of the struts and giving them a good push and pull. I noticed that there was a bit of movement on the securing cap on top of the suspension tower under the bonnet.

Should there be any movement at all or is a tiny amount acceptable?... Read more

Check out the Mot test manual .section 2.5 page 1 .www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attac...f

It just says check for excessive wear. that's a judgement which I haven't acquired....

In view of a recently published survey from a well known vehicle warranty company maybe it is time to change opinions regarding certain makes or models. Surprising to learn that Renault and Peugeot do quite well. Ford and Vauxhall have a decent showing. Mazda do very well. However, on the forum the current thinking is; don't touch French cars (dodgy electrics), Vauxhall (only average) and Mazda(diesels are rubbish). Maybe these manufacturers have turned a corner concerning production and quality control. I suppose any recent or current opinion from people using these vehicles might be useful in correcting or affirming the long held views of many( myself included). Comments welcome.

Nissan seem to be a very niche manufacturer now in the UK at least. They were previously good value-for-money, reasonably reliable motoring. Sad also to see them having to flog the (Almera 'replacement') Pulsar at 30%+ off list price to get any kind of sales...

Niche? As in the best selling SUV? The Quashqai? ...

I was wondering what might cause the speedometer needle to flicker. It is fine 99.9% of the time but, occasionally/randomly, it will flicker noticeably for a few seconds before settling back down. When it does occur, the radio has, on an odd occasion 'surged' too. (The battery was changed recently as was the speed sensor). None of the other dials do this. Might it be an electrical fault with the instrument cluster or it there another possible reason? Read more

There's a news item on this site, about Toyota completely dismanting a truck in America, which has accumulated 1 million miles. Am I being cynical, but can the only reason for this is to determine how money can be saved in the future by not over-engineering vehicles. Read more

I read any article like that as a marketing puff piece. Lookey here - Toyotas are good for one meelion miles....best propaganda since Clarksons Toyota pickup piece on Top gear....
