Is there any law forbidding the use of tow ropes nowadays ? I still carry the ropes that I used in yesteryear before cars became so reliable. The last time that I used one was to tow a people carrier from a muddy patch in a National Trust car park. The driver said that there was no chance because the vehicle was too heavy. I told him to engage reverse gear and slip the clutch so the wheels crept, and then towed him out backwards. You can do that with a Subaru. Read more
just read te following question in the ask section:
Dealer has over pressured my tyresI bought a brand new S3 in December last year. I've now done 4200 miles. I have a long drive tomorrow so decided to check the tyre pressures for the first time. They should be 38psi front & 35psi rear at normal load & 42psi all round with full load but all were 50psi. I can only assume they must've been higher than this when I collected the car. Why? Will this have caused damage to the tyres &/or suspension? Many thanks, Andrew... Read more
I check the tyre pressures on all 3 of our cars on the first weekend of every month. Along with oil, coolant, brake fluid, PAS fluid (though that's only on the Shogun, both BMWs have EPAS). At the same time, I have a feel on the tread for depth, and a reasonable inspection for cuts, nicks, bulges, etc.
I do the same with cold tyre pressures, coolant, PAS fluid and washer fluid (double strength in winter) - not the oil as it's all electronic and no dipstick and no brake fluid as it's buried under half the engine so is a dealer specialist job every 2 years/20,000 miles (yes, seriously!) - tyres are measured at 6 places across each tyre 3 times/year and logged (changed at 4mm for the winters and 3mm for the summers)....
Have found a 2004 Fiat Punto 3dr Active for my son who has passed his test. The car appears to be a one-owner car with only 10,500 miles. MoT till November. Buying it for £500. Actually heard the car run last night and had a proper look (it is a bona vacantia case in which my firm acts for the Duchy of Lancaster) so got a mate to drive it to my house on his trade plates before he took it to his garage.
The car is very clean inside (I reckon the back seats have never been sat on) and the engine is remarkably smooth. Having all the fluids replaced, filters, plugs included and brakes given a thorough check over. It appears to be rust free and everything works! Slight leak on the head breather pipe which will be replaced. ... Read more

I have a decrepit 2001 Golf MkIV SE. But the seats are *very* comfortable, like little armchairs.
I am going to replace it with a mid-sized MPV. Not a "big" one because it's only me, the wife, the mother-in-law and the dog (MPV for ease of access for MIL, and luggage).
I want a Touran but find the front seats very unforgiving - too firm and very constricting.
What similar-sized MPVs have *comfortable* seats?

For what it's worth, I rather liked the seats in the Toyota Verso I test drove last year.
I am buying a car from the Duchy of Lancaster in a Bona Vacantia case. The V5 cannot be found. I know I need to apply for a new V5 and I can get an receipt from the company acting for the Duchy proving have acquired the car legally. However, if I want to tax the car before I get the V5, how do it do it?

It's worth giving dvla a ring for advice as the online advice doesn't necessarily cover all scenarios. If you are calling them it's best to do so before you've sent anything back.
What a truly horrid 7 seater, ridiculously expensive price, awful rear seats compared to most rivals and flimsy interior such as the pathetic rear seat trays.

We just did a review on the 2 Series Gran Tourer here: www.jks-fleet.co.uk/bmw-2-series-gran-tourer-revie.../. Whilst we weren't quite a scathing as you, I would agree with some of what you are saying.
On the point of discounts, they are now coming in and they are coming in much cheaper than before to lease....
Someone was asking for car data for their fansite (not me, btw!)

It was an Audi driver, why are we so suprised? ;-)
Just recently, I have noticed if I am driving towards twilight, and No headlights on, the dash is fine, but as soon as I turn on the lights, any of the switch positions, the traction control light comes on, and stays on until I stop the engine
and re-start it. This also causes the cruise control to turn off.
If i am using cruise control thru the day, it works fine...until I try turning on the lights, and Yep, same problem comes up again.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Read more
Check operation of the rear lights.Especially the tail and brake lights.
Think towing maybe forbidden by law in France (on toll roads anyway).
About 15 years ago i was in a convoy when the following car broke down at the end of a toll road in france. I quickly hooked up the rope and towed them through the toll booth....
