Hello,

I need your assistance and opinion regarding choosing Renault Modus. We are planning to buy second car (used), and we are considering Renault Modus.

Now, we are in dilemma - which one to choose. We have almost identical offer for Modus with regular, well proven 1.2 16v engine with 75HP, and second, slightly more expensive 1.2TCE with 101HP.

Second car will be used for car driving, and occasional country side rides and shorter journeys. Car will be used for driving kids to school and sports, and it will be rarely fully loaded.

Main question is related to reliability and mainteance costs for turbo engine, since 1.2 16v is well known. ... Read more

I think the 1.2 tce has got quite a good reputation. Haven't seen any reports of trouble when installed in a Renault.

Strangley, Nissan use this engine in various models and there have been complaints of excessive oil consumption.

I just wanted to endorse HJ's recommendation of Shell V-Power Diesel. Last week on a 400 mile run from Dijon using a mixture of Shell V-Power and BP Ultimate Diesels I pulled into our Hotel in Carcassonne showing an average of 49.6 mpg for the journey. This was door to door, included stops for fuel, lunch and 'peages', a fullish load, two passengers and A/C on all the time. OK, this was a shown on the car's computer and could be a bit optimistic but actual usage generally checked out; we also showed an average speed of 75 for all running time - not bad for a 3 litre V6 - I'm a 'Premium Fuel' convert.

The reviews for the Nextbase 312GW dash cam look solid. Only disappointing thing by the looks of it was the internal battery life for photo mode - cardashcamreviews.com/nextbase-312gw-dash-cam-revi.../.

Still love the idea of that magnetic mount though, as I've had a few dash cams in the past that have been very trick to dismount!

I have had my 312gw since Jan 2018 and have been impressed by the image quality, that said I noticed quite quickly that the low light footage is rubbish.
The images produced by this camera under low level lighting is not worth recording and therefore renders the cam to nothing more than excess luggage. I contacted NB and they asked that I make adjustments to the positioning and that I removed the polarizing filter bought for 20quid ( another waste of cash ) to allow as much light as possible into the lens. In short these changes did not work and the technician from NB told me that my expectations were unrealistic.
My advice is that if you have one of these cameras do not expect it to provide any kind of usable footage after dark or even in low light conditions.

I am disappointed with the cameras peformance but even more disappointed with the customer service response.

The never ending roadworks from the M25/M3 all the way to Fleet services which has a speed limit of 50MPH. This improvement began years ago, there isn't a single section that's completed, it just gets longer and longer, stretching now for about 15miles with isolated dots of workmen here and there. The M3 itself was built in a shorter time, it's a scandal.

Driving along this stretch many times over many years I'm always puzzled at why so many mnay drivers are overtaking me at around 60MPH. Do they know something I dont? Are the average speed cameras working? Surely so many drivers cannot be unaware or the speed controls? I don't get it. Read more

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help me with some advice.

I am looking to buy a comfortable automatic car for under £2000 pref under 90k miles with max tax £180/year.

I plan to drive a long distance commute by the end of the year as I am moving out of London and will drive in for work.

I also need something that I can sit in, I have an arthritic condition where maintaining my posture is vital. I recently suffered from a lot of nerve pain and found automatics to be a viable alternative when I rented them abroad on holiday. As my left leg gets a lot of pain from using the clutch I am unable to drive my current Toyota Corolla 1.3 SE (2001) for more than 15mins without it affecting me for the whole day. I have tried cushions etc.. but it doesn't help.

I have also found that seats, where you can adjust the tilt of the cushion you sit on, are the most comfortable however I have only found this on newer cars and I do not have that amount of money to put down at the moment.

I was advised to only stick with Japanese, BMW, maybe ford focus and Volkswagen auto boxes.

If anyone here could help me out with anything more info that would be a great help. Thanks in advance

I am at 180,000km on my auto box and it is fine. I put on a transmission cooler so as to avoid the dreaded oil and water problems you can get if the cooler is part of the radiator. My auto is supposed to be sealed for life but I get the oil changed every few years.

As for seats - I believe that some companies like Recaro make after market seats that can be swapped into a car. Probably expensive though but you might get something like that from a wrecker....

I am frustrating with my neighbour because her car Ford Fiesta 1997 looks like a scrap condition full of rust, she still drive everyday to work and take the kids too as I took her number plate and look on www.gov.uk it has been tax till 2017 but no MOT since on April 2nd 2016. I feel it not fair because I am obey the law to pay my tax and MOT also insurance too, but she never been caught. Where can I report it to police by 101 or DVLA? If there is no MOT is means she had no insurance?

Driving without an MOT is against the law. That's the strarting point if you are "pulled up".

Anyone who drives a car MUST know when their MOT/tax etc is due. I would suggest some rigid car ownership questions as part of the driving test....

Thanks Rob.

My claim against the dealership is valid under the sales of good act, but being more than 6 months after the sale, the onus is on me to prove the problem cannot be down to general wear and tear. Hence the question. A long shot I know.

I would say quite normal. My XF has a very wide angle camera as well. I think they need to be to include all of the area that the car could touch. You just get used to it with time.

Thanks for the reply. So it's normal....
