Ford Fiesta - 2011 Ford Zetec 1.25 engine hunting - light now on - E39mad

Our 1.25 Zetec (2011) has done 33000 miles and following a recent Trust Ford service starting hunting. We run it on Shell V power as get better mpg.

The engine management light has now come on.

Ford want £78+ VAT just for the diagnostic before doing any work.

What are the points to check please before shelling out stupid money.

To confirm - the engine was "hunting" at idle - revs rising and dropping and now some weeks later the Engine Management Light is now on

Basic checks first. Check for intake manifold vacuum leaks. Split hoses are very common on these engines.

Yes, check for vacuum leaks.

Also get Torque free on your phone and a compatible bluetooth OBD2 adaptor for 20 quid or so. Then you can read the codes yourself, which may yield a clue whre to look

or, use a small independant garage, £30 plus vat is more like it. Maybe less if they get the work after.

Check the oil filler cap on the engine is fitted correctly and secure.
