Hi,

I have acquired my mums old Citroen C1 to get to work following a change of job. It's going to be used around town to get to work (only 5 miles each way but the bus takes FOREVER!) and probably get a decent motorway/A road run at weekends. ... Read more

Daveyjp - is it easy enough to check?

I do check fluids frequently anyway so I'd notice a loss of coolant. I'm more concerned at the idea of it going whilst on a long run. But if its not something that is likely to just spontaneously die I'm loathe to throw 200 quid at a car worth a grand "just in case".

Our 3-year old 19,000 mile Freelander has suddenly developed an engine whin. The landrover dealer, after a brief engine run, diagnosted this as caused by the power-steering oil being contaminated with metal fragments. This sounds a bizarre diagnosis for an engine-speed related noise, but is it reasonable? Read more

On a three year old, with such low mileage, the dealer should replace the lot. Steering rack, pump and filter/reservoir. It is, as the doc says, a well known problem. The metal apparently comes from weld spatter in the steering rack housing, during manufacture. Mine was done at four years old under LR extended warranty. Never any more trouble, though I suspect some whine now coming from the alternator. I will let that develop a bit, as they say.

My son bought a new Sandero 1.2 Ambiente coming up for 12 months ago. I have to say that I have been impressed with it and have had fun driving it (a low power 1.2 petrol vs. my old 2.0d x-type). When my car goes to the big scrappy in the sky I fancy one of these.

He didn't get the 'emergency' spare wheel (£100+), but got the standard compressor and jar of glue (as useful as SFA IMHO).... Read more

Hi, 2010 reg Fiesta diesel with 101,000 miles when cambelt failed. Car cut out and no restart. Relayed to the Ford dealer who has serviced the car from new. Head sent away for checking and skimmed but on putting the engine back together (over 3 weeks since breakdown!) the garage have now said that the engine won't start at all and that the DPF is blocked which is what caused the cambelt failure. Is this likely? The cost for fixing the DPF problem is quoted at approx. £1500 (on top of circa £1000 for work already done). I've now lost faith in the dealer as feel that cambelt change should have been done sooner and, if not part of scheduled service, maybe they should alert owners to the potential for them to go. I'm not mechanically minded but friends say that the DPF blockage would not cause the cambelt to break. Please advise? My repair bill looks like being over 50% of what the car is worth! Help please! Many thanks. Read more

Could the problem have been DMF failure (if the Fiesta has one) rather than DPF?

Hi all

Random Q. Is there a such thing as an optimum rev range to keep a car within to preserve the engine? Eg; I generally keep within 2 & 3,000 rpm on my petrol Corsa (change up at about 2750-3000) and imagine this would be lower for a diesel. I would imagine driving TOO economically in terms of revs (ie constantly changing below 2000 in a petrol) would cause the engine to labour and have a negative effect?... Read more

Even though I only do about 3000 - 4000 miles in my car (Mazda3 mk1 1.6 petrol), I do mostly mixed and longer journeys on dual carriageways/motorways, but even so, I still like to 'use the entire rev range' on every month or two (i.e. an 'Italian tune-up) above the normal 2000-3500 revs (70mph in mine is about 3500 revs or so) to clear any gunk from the engine and to ensure, if and when needed, that rev range (and thus power/torque band) is available should I need it for a swift overtake, etc.

I think my car's manual even said I should do so (after the original 'running in period' when new) to a dgree to ensure this, a bit like someone exercising regularly, including both sprints and longer distance running so that their tendons don't get short....

So as the title suggests i have had my brand new 2016 seat leon MK3 for 8 weeks, i drove it onto the drive last week which is a moderate incline and applied the handbrake turned the engine off and got out of the car, as i went to shut the door the handbrake failed the car rolled back bent the door back crumpling the drivers door and pinning me against the door and fence leaving me with a broken finger and multiple bruises. the car then rolled back into the neighbours metal fence bending it all the way back.

Hi,
Can anyone provide advice for a friend who is importing a 7 year old car from Jersey, is there a process to follow?

Since the car is not an EU-registered car, it looks like you will need an individual vehicle approval. See
