As a youngish driver i struggled to get a cheap quote on my car insurance, i searched and searched but still the lowest price i managed to get was still too much. This kept going on until my older firends just out of the blue said 'why dont you cover your voluntary excess?'

I looked this excess protection up because frankly, i didnt even know i could cover my voluntary excess. For £44 i could get £1000 worth of excess cover! When taking out my insurance policy i usually would only put my voluntary excess to around £300 because i was scared of if i had a bump i would have to pay this. Well with my excess covered i could put my volentry excess up to £1000 which dropped my insurance by £hundereds!... Read more

I second that as I have had similar outcomes.

criminal record has far reaching effect - eg employment & travel (eg USA Visa waiver scheme may not be used if traveller has a criminal record) etc .... it a lot more serious than 35 in a 30 zone.

SWMBO and I were waiting in the car to drive off and an Asian gentleman knocked on the window. My wife answered and asked him what he wanted. He was very respectful to her and said that he had not eaten all day, could she give him some change. Just then there was a cheery calling tone from a mobile phone that he quickly took from his pocket and cancelled the tone. SWMBO afterwards said that the guy looked genuine and she felt sorry for him but when he took out the mobile sympathy went out of the window. No, she didn't give him money. Neither SWMBO nor I own a mobile - we just don't feel the need.

The use of smart-phones is increasing and more 'apps' are released every day. One of the latest is that you telephone your bank to authorise a payment and back it up with a 'selfie'. You have to blink while doing so to prove that it is you and not some toerag who's stolen your mobile and using a photograph. Think of filling up your car and going through such a performance to pay ! It's said that the bank's computer uses software to recognise faces even though the owner has subsequently grown a beard. I can imagine that will go down like a lead balloon with the lady BRs.... Read more

I wonder how this would have looked on an insurance claim.

I am buying a Honda Jazz using PCP Personal Contract Purchase.

Insurance are asking if I am registered keeper and registered owner. This is a little confusing.

Am I the registered keeper only but not the registered owner ?

I have asked around and I am getting various opinions regarding this but surely with the amount of cars financed via PCP deals these days then it should be quite clear.

It would be great if I could get some clarification for this as I want to avoid any issues in the unlikely event of a claim.

Thanks Read more

The person on the log book is not neccessarily the legal owner

You simply tell the insurance that you are the owner and the vehicle is on finance (if they ask)

A voltmeter to show the general state of the battery and the charging system seems like something worth having. Not something you might want to mess about with on a newer car but useful on an older vehicle for 'health monitoring' to spot problems early.

There are 3-digit voltmeters in various colours on the bay of fees for 99p delivered to your door from the PRC which claim good accuracy, but not sure I'd believe that at face value. Also perhaps an analogue dial would be easier to take in at a glance.... Read more

I have two plugin voltmeters, very useful on new cars with smart charging, and when towing as the voltage sensitive relay used to cool the fridge relies on the voltage going high enough to pull in the VSR.

I've tested both using a proffessional volt meter, one reads 0.1 volt high, the other 0.1 volt low. Thats good enough for me....

As it was a little colder today, when I went to start my car, I thought I would keep the car key down for a little longer.

When I thought I heard the sound of a "started up" car, I let the key back, just to find the car is in STOP mode.
So I tried to start it a second time, but hold the key down for a shorted time. This time, the car started all right.

It looks to me that if you hold the car key down while the car is already started, it can turn the car back to STOP (even together with some lauder noises).
Is that true or it's just my misconception?

Any help please? (it's a 52 reg peugeot) Read more

If this is a IDI diesel, operating the glow plugs for longer will help it start in colder weather, as will giving them a second burst after the relay drops out.

Does anyone can help me in the choice?
- I would not spend an excessive amount, what we see for Lexia (about 70 €) suits me
- I want to make sure models vehicles as old as my Xsara are well and fully supported.

Ok it's simple NO after market diagnostic unit is going to be any good unless its BIDIRECTIONAL that means it can reset all codes shown as in renault /Peugeot/citrons automatic transmission's /electric power steering ect ect most of these after market scanners can't even read the codes for French cars because they use the clip software/ scanner , and beware if you buy one off eBay there are a lot of Chinese ones out there that can be problematic , so remember unless its bidirectional and has clip software its no good for a French car !

Its a digital world .
