2002 peugeot - Holding key down for too long when starting a car - CarUser2006

As it was a little colder today, when I went to start my car, I thought I would keep the car key down for a little longer.

When I thought I heard the sound of a "started up" car, I let the key back, just to find the car is in STOP mode.
So I tried to start it a second time, but hold the key down for a shorted time. This time, the car started all right.

It looks to me that if you hold the car key down while the car is already started, it can turn the car back to STOP (even together with some lauder noises).
Is that true or it's just my misconception?

Any help please? (it's a 52 reg peugeot)

If this is a IDI diesel, operating the glow plugs for longer will help it start in colder weather, as will giving them a second burst after the relay drops out.
