My 1.9 Tdi mk5 is developed a problem where I noticed it is hard to start from cold. I fitted a new battery which has helped, but it has still not cured the problem. The only way I can start it is by putting my foot on the accerlator whilst turning it over??

I had a previous problem with an air noise in the following link which has been unresolved: www.honestjohn.co.uk/user-article/112344/vw-golf-1...5... Read more

Got it sorted, must just be a faulty float. I cleaned the glow plugs just to be sure and put diesel in the fuel filter and primed the system by turning the key a few time. Starts first go now

It's always possible that the sensor has failed.

In the HJ Archive way back in 2001 (Monday 22nd October at 1409 hrs to be precise) there's a thread about fitting a new battery.

www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=2204#m...7

I have the dubious honour of posting in it. Mention is made of the Draper 'Memory Saver' that you plug in to the cig. lighter socket to keep the settings during the battery swap. At the time I hadn't heard of them but subsequently bought one and have never used it.

My question is....on something like my Hyundai i10 how sensible is it to change your own battery. In the good old days we didn't give it a second thought (same as using jump leads) but nowadays I'm wary of doing anything to upset (a) the car's electronics....and (b) the people who maintain the warranty (Hyundai until September this year).

I see that we must turn the ignition key to position one to activate the cig. lighter circuit. And check the 9 volt battery in the device is sound too.

Apart from the radio stations what else might we lose if we just disconnected the old and fitted the new? Is there still a radio code on cars such as this? Or what else in the electronics might get lost in the move?

Thanks. Read more

Some car like BMW need a new battery code into the Car else might not charge properly

I have a problem when on starting from cold ie the car has been left overnight to cool right down and ONLY when the outside temperature is around 5 degs C or lower.

On starting the vehicle from cold, within a few seconds the warning "Engine fault, arrange repair" orange light comes on accompanied by an audiable warning together with the service light on the left hand side of the display. As soon as the warning buzzer has finished its 3 buzzes the warning light goes out leaving only the "service" light on. This happens on tick-over, as soon as I touch the accelerator the service light goes out. The whole cycle repeats itself after a few seconds. As I drive away this occurs again as soon as I take my foot off the acceleator only to disapear as soon as I accelerate again.... Read more

Hi, I have the exact same issue with my 2015 1.6 Blue HDI C4 GP2.

May I know if the issue was resolved and if so what was the cause?...

I'm in the market for a used/nn car, possibly as soon as this weekend.

I'm wondering what dealers generally prefer, a client that can buy there or then - or one that goes for their finance? I guess the real question is do I let a dealer know that I'm in a position to buy outright, or insist on setting a price before discussing how payment takes place...?... Read more

Agreed-and if trading in-then the way forward is to work softly softly towards "price to change". That tends to force options to the surface!

Is it possible for a reasonable competent DIY mechanic to do a manual adjustment of the clutch on a Peugeot 308 HDi. Mine is showing early signs of the clutch slipping, I have a new car being delivered in 5 - 7 weeks and I'm trying to avoid the expense of a clutch replacement in the interim. I'm a low mileage driver but don't relish the prospect of being immobile in the interim. Read more

Your peugeot should have a dual mass flywheel. If that.s the case, the presure plate is certeinly auto ajustable mening is ajusts its self as the clutch wears out, keepind a constant feel of it through its full life of use, untill it worn past the point of use.

While you're right Skidpan, the usual procedure on the 307 is to gut the insides of the DPF as there's no replacement pipe on the market, and get the car remapped. An MOT wouldn't detect this.

I don't like the obsession of removing them either. They cost fractions of a penny per mile and if the system is maintained, will run and run and run. You just have to factor in the cost of a replacement DPF and additive fillup when you buy a car.

Being a former Honda owner I used to frequent the Civinfo website. Quite a few Civic owners tend to get upset at a perceived bias toward VAG and the Golf in particular. Given this is a more eclectic forum, what are the views here?

I must admit to a suspicion of bias but no more than that; mainly down to reviewers seeming to ignore the less positive elements of certain cars, where they would highlight essentially the same weakness in other models. Read more

Of course there is a review bias. A large part of car marketing is persuading auto-journos with wine, food, track and travel experiences. Some are better than others with bigger budgets.

30+ years ago I used to travel to Paris weekly and would hire a small car for local use. There were material difference between makes - Metro, Peugot, Citroen, VW, Renault, etc. Today differences are minimal due to platform sharing, Rover are no more, which car was most recently launched....

Looking at Ask HJ this morning there is a query re CRV and in the related questions tag there is a query regarding Honda servicing plans. I had the same service issue last year and assumed it was a one-off but it seems it must have been going on for years. What happens is the dealer sells you a sevice deal that indicates annual/12,500 services including oil but when you go for a service they only do what the onboard computer says - excluding oil if the computer says no. In my case it would have meant a return to the garage in about 4 months for oil. Not convenient and taking me to 16 month oil change. I took it up with the service manager at the time and he turned off the computer and they did the oil and air filter -also not due according to the computer but due in the service plan. I am amazed that with Honda and their dealers reputation for sevice that such a fundamental mismatch is allowed to continue when it must give rise to queries on a daily basis.
Having said all that the service deal was very reasonable at £580 or so for four annual services including for example brake fluid and air filters every two years.
To ensure you get the right level of service you have paid for the answer is to get them to set you up on time and mileage servicing from day 1. Read more

I should have said 10k or 1 year, but in my case I was having 2 oil/filter, full services a year ie every 6 months for 2 years, but being a turbo I would not let it go longer.

point is with the Honda service you dont have to go by the computer tells you what to do, it can be turned off(bearing in mind service manager has to write it in the service book) and the garage will service as per manual/service book...

When I started the car up this morning I noticed that the fuel gauge was not working. (stuck at 0 with no movement whatsoever). When I drove the car I then noticed that the speedometer was also not moving.

In addition to this, the ABL light is permanently showing amber. (It normally doesn't show).... Read more
