This evening at 7pm I called into town to get a take-away.
The town center is semi-pedestrianised but with lots of car-parking bays - including right outside the take-away shops (which is great!). The car-parking bays are cut into the pedestrianised pavements so you park up by turning right or left off the road and parking at a right-angle to the road.... Read more
Hi, I have a 2005 Rover 75 and there is a lever in the rear of each headlight unit, these are for changing the angle of the beam if driving abroad which im sure you will know. can anyone give me a 100% answer as to what position these levers should be in for the uk roads, I know one is up and one is down but which is which ?

Assume you have projector or xenon headlights. You will need to switch on the lights against a wall or piece of cardboard and move the lever to find out which setting gives a "kick up " beam to the left. This will be for the uk roads. The handbook identifies the lever ,but does not indicate which is which.
I am looking to buy a MK5 Golf 2.0 GT (pre DPF) to replace my Focus 2.0 Zetec petrol. I do 12k milage a year and want the holy grail of more torque, power and economy. I am amazed at the torque difference on paper between the two (131 v 236 lb-ft), but the Golf is alot heavier (16%). Fuel economy and road tax are hugely better too. I have very briefly driven the Golf and was really impressed. I don't use motorways, but accasional A road higher speed cruising, mostly B roads. I am worried about high repair costs for diesels, but the other benefits are tempting. I will be looking for a fully serviced car for 4.5-5k hopefully. Is the Golf a good choice, or are there better cars for the money? Read more
That generation of Golf has, to be blunt, a horrendous reputation for problems. The accountants seemed to over-rule the engineers all the way through.
Is this a good car jump starter?

Elementary physics suggests it can only supply the advertised 720 amps for 45 seconds.
Perhaps I'm missing the point, but presumably it's only intended to start the engine, so if the engine is otherwise okay it should only take seconds to start?...
I'm after a Honda Civic Hatchback. I have found a Honda Approved one with extremely low mileage of 15k but it's 8 years old. Or there's one near me (not approved) which is 5 years old but has 65k miles. The latter one looks a lot nicer, has better features etc. But my main priority is reliability and longevity. I want to keep this car for 5 years minimum and will be doing 15k miles per year. I travel a lot so reliability is key. Everything else I don't really care about.
Both petrol. Both the same price. Both serviced each year, both have 12 month MOT, both seem well-kept to me (I'm no expert admittedly). What would you do? Thanks for any help, I'm going round in circles... Read more
Suggestion-when you do an on line dealer or trade availability check-reject all "for sale" secondhand vehicles that are pictured with the number plate "whitened out". Being able to access the number plate will enable you enter the vehicle details to check car tax and more importantly-MOT history-including advisables . Those are the facts-without sales hype.
Good luck!
I recently read an article in an old copy of the BBC Focus magazine about ‘Smart Headlights’. The article is about Ford’s Camera-Based Advanced Front Lighting System. It seems that the Ford Motor company are developing a front lighting system that will react to such things as animals on the road up to 120 meters ahead. It also includes GPS to monitor your whereabouts and boost the headlights for blind bends or junctions. Where there is no GPS signal the system can track road marking and read traffic signs. Perhaps this is for the future driverless cars. If not, I can imagine many young drivers coming to rely on their ‘automatic’ headlights and the resultant accidents.
But, why does a driverless car need headlights at all ? Can’t they have Daytime Running Lights so that they can be seen and rely on their radar. One thing that’s encouraging; driverless cars will likely be restricted in speed.... Read more
I don't know the A12, but I agree with the sentiment. I read somewhere that the human eyes is at its most effective with yellow light. I don't usually have much of a problem with the average headlight with tungsten bulbs. They look yellow compared to the new type of headlights which are coloured white, which I do have trouble with. I know that some LEDs for general lighting are produced with a 'warm white' colour. I'd don't suppose it beyond the makers to produce an LED of colour that mimics the tungsten bulb.
Does any of the BRs know what the law is now concerning the brightness of lights and the distribution ? In yesteryear I've seen the MOT tester with a headlight testing device that would indicate if the light was not adjusted correctly....
Some of you may recall that a car drove into mine a month ago. This is now with my insurance company and I will post more at a later date.
Many of us are bothered by phone calls, texts and e-mails about PPI, accidents, etc. Yesterday I had a call about the accident I was involved in and actually thought it was genuine until I realised they knew sweet FA about it. I did find it quite distressing by the end of the call.... Read more

Having been sat on the drive for 2 weeks over Christmas, my wife went to drive her C4 only to discover that it seems to have developed a fault with the internal ventilation fan. None of the settings on fan speed produce any air. The lights on the fan controls are still visible and the AC and recirculation options are selectable.
I'm wondering if it is a fuse, but the vehicle handbook does not state the location of the fuse for the fan. ... Read more
Dear Ed,
I have the exact problem with my 2011 Citroen C4.
Left it for approx. 2 weeks and now the fan for the AC unit is not working.
May I ask if you found the solution for this problem?
Best regards,
Mirza
