This evening at 7pm I called into town to get a take-away.

The town center is semi-pedestrianised but with lots of car-parking bays - including right outside the take-away shops (which is great!). The car-parking bays are cut into the pedestrianised pavements so you park up by turning right or left off the road and parking at a right-angle to the road.

So, take-away successfully placed on passenger seat, I went to reverse out of the parking bay into the road. The road was clear both ways so I started to reverse slowly out. Having completed about half the maneuver, I noticed a cyclist approaching, so paused to allow him to pass (there was enough room for a car to pass, and on their correct side of the road).

But, instead of riding on past, he stopped behind my car (in the middle of the road). Thinking he was just being a bit inconsiderate or perhaps having a mechanical problem, I paused to give him a chance to move on. However, after about 30 seconds a gang of about 10 similar-looking cyclists appeared from down the road and joined him in the middle of the road behind my car. By this time, 1 or 2 other cars were starting to queue up to get past the cyclists’ picket line.

After about 3 minutes, I drove forward back into the car-parking bay and the cyclist followed me. Throughout this time, I had sat quietly in my seat with the windows closed. I simply monitored the situation (slightly baffled) in my mirrors and over my shoulder. In the end, after another couple of minutes, the gang cycled away; and I drove off without further incident.

Has anyone else had such an experience; and what was the correct thing to have done?

I did consider reversing slowly out into the cyclist group (in the hope they would move out the way), but I think this was what I was being goaded to do. As it was, I lost 5 minutes out of my life, the alternative might have been hours at a police station and court appearances for "using my car as a deadly weapon" (or something).

What if the incident had dragged on? Is there no law against someone blocking your car in like that?

By the way, it was chips with pineapple special and BBQ spare ribs. And it was still hot when I got home.

Some sort of localised protest whether about a specific issue or along lines of critical mass?

Teenagers playing a game?

If situation had persisted best option would surely to go back into bay, stop engine, get out and ask them politley to move.

If it persists call police?

The relevant law is Section 137 of the Highways Act 1980.

137.

(1). If a person, without lawful authority or excuse, in any way wilfully obstructs the free passage along a highway he is guilty of an offence

And do you think for one moment Plod would give a monkeys ?

I think you behaved very patiently and sensibly. I would probably have given a short polite toot on the horn and may have got out and asked them to move. If they hadn't I'd have got back in the car and called the police.

As ORB says, whether that would have any effect is another matter, but at least the call would have been logged in case of further trouble.

That was my immediate reaction as well!

You don't say what signals you were using:

In this position one should keep the reverse lights on and foot on the brake pedal to light the brake lights. The reverse lights signal that you are part way through a reversing manouvre but the brake lights indicate that you are stopped and it is safe to pass.

Your patience is to be commended all the same.

Probably just idiots trying to be awkward, but equally possibly just ignorance. It's quite often you see people walking behind a reversing car, particularly in supermarket car parks or when crossing a road. A disappointingly high number of people are just somewhere on the scale of deeply thick to plain rude.

Pedestrians have right of way.

"Pedestrians have right of way."

They do in certain places of course, but not everywhere, and there's always the need for common sense:

There once was a man called Albert J,

Who always claimed his right of way.

He was right - dead right - as he walked along -

But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong.

Not sure about rights of way in car parks - anyone know?

Of course they do, but is it too much to hope for a modicum of common sense or courtesy ? Aye, I suppose it is. Let's all just walk behind reversing vehicles whether we are sure the driver has seen us or not because it's our "right" rather than pause a moment either to ensure its safe or better still to allow someone the courtesy to complete a maneover they started before we arrived on the scene.

If I see someone reversing out I pause to allow them to do it despite my "rights", it just seems the sensible and polite thing to do, but sensible behaviour and politeness seem to be rare commodities.

Agree totally, every right has an equivalent responsibility. If everyone realised that and threw in a modicum of commonsense and courtesy we'd all be fine. But they don't, and we're not.

{Anecdote on its way}

Years back I was told by an Army driver that standing behind a reversing vehicle would result in a disciplinary charge. Acting as banksman for a reversing truck, you stand in front of it, where the driver can see you clearly.

up-date...up-date...up-date

Got a note pushed through my front door from the local police. Note had been there for a good week or so buried in some junk mail.

The note didn't go into much detail; but asked me to telephone their local number about an "incident". I had an anxiety attack that they were nabbing me for that armed bank job (that I never done guv). However, I reasoned that they would have come after me with a bit more enthusiasm if they had suspected me of any serious or even minor crime.

Anyway, I phoned the number the next day, and eventually got called back by a nice WPC who explained that there had been an incident in the town centre and that they had looked at CCTV footage to investigate it.

Apparently, round the corner from my incident (and a few minutes earlier) there was a motorist who got surrounded by the same gang of cyclists in a similar incident. I think that might have lasted longer or been worse in some other way, and the man had his very elderly mother in the car. Both were badly shaken up; and I think they called 999. Obviously the gang had cycled off before the police arrived, did the same thing to me, then melted away into the night. No arrests were made. My car had been identified on CCTV footage so they had contacted me to see if I could assist with the enquiry.

I explained that I didn't have any knowledge of the suspects and was not really able to identify them in any useful way. I had not phoned 999 at the time because I deemed their behaviour to be anti-social rather than criminal, I was annoyed rather than scared, I didn't think the cops would arrive quickly enough to be effective.

I felt a bit guilty that I had not reported the incident (maybe on the non-emergency number) because I might have been able to assist with a more serious related incident (as was the case).

Anyway, I offered my services should they should want any kind of witness statement. The WPC agreed that it was anti-social rather than criminal; but said they were looking to do some kind of anti-social behaviour procedure (can't remember the details). I suppose it's a good thing that the police were interested enough to at least follow the case up... fair play to them for that.

I'm not holding my breath because I don't think the CCTV footage will be clear enough to identify the suspects. I'll keep you posted if anything happens; but we all know it's not like on CSI where they would zoom in on the reflection in a shop window to reveal their name band in their underpants or something...
