Glad it all went well for Op. No idea why people had so many doubts about it all though.

Recently got new tyres for the Alfa and moved tyres from rear to front which generally have very little wear indeed, except for the inside inch of one of the tyres which is like a mountain range, you can feel with your hand it going up and down.

This is a Pirelli tyre. The new ones on the back are Michelin.... Read more

Its either got to be alignment or a defective tyre. Check the camber angles.

5 days ago, while shutting the boot something got caught and the 2 little number plate lights fell out.

Took my car in for an MOT and pointed this out and asked if they could put them back before testing as I knew it would fail.

They did the test anyway and failed it becasue of the lights - they asked me to bring it back the following week becasue the lights wouldn't work and they needed more time.... Read more

To me I'd be questioning the amount of time taken and their hourly rate. The job in question could have been tackled in an hour or less, but I guess it all depends on how long it takes to take off the panels in question.

But, again, if the person isn't knowledgable about how to remove the panels and takes twice the usual time, should you have to pay for his lack of knowledge? I'd say no, but its what you have to expect if you go to a fix-anything garage rather than someone who specialises in just one marque and knows it inside out....

Evening.

Earlier today I gently bumped a parked car outside a friend's house. The owner came out of their place and inspected their vehicle - which we agreed had no damage bar the reg plate which split upon contact. No details were exchanged / requested.... Read more

And a few years ago when some body grazed my car and then 3 young men attempted to claim whiplash, it took months to chase it up. It was only settled when the other party were invited to court to pursue and did nothing followed by me telling my insurance company that if they did not throw out the obvious fraudulent claim I would refuse to testify in court.

Case closed within 2 weeks!

Hi,

I am in the process of replacing the front suspension struts of a 2005 Xsara Picasso. On the driver side, the bolt that clamp bolt that holds the strut in the hub didn't come out so I ended up drilling it out. It worked but in the process I took out some of the material of the inside of the hole, essentially widening it by a couple of millimeters to one side - not all the way though. Now the question is whether I should replace the swivel hub after this. Thanks for any advice.... Read more

In the end I drove the car for quite a while like that but finally replaced the hub, for the peace of mind, when I replaced the control arms.

Interesting evaluation of a BMW prototype that uses water injection to boost volumetric efficiency in a petrol turbo: www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/1-series/92092/bmw-1-ser...w

Funny how these ideas come around. In the 60s, there was a gizmo for sale for motorbikes which fitted round the mouth of the carb. It had a small water reservoir and a couple of string wicks stretched across the carb throat. The idea being that the air rushing into the carb would evaporate moisture off the wick and cool the inlet charge, as if you were riding on a foggy, cold morning. Read more

Oh it's come around again has it?

Saab did this with the 99 Turbo S using indirect water injection as a factory fit and it's been done since donkey's years ago on aircraft both piston and turbine powered....

My girlfriend had a clutch failure last year and a new 3 part clutch pack was installed on the car on 25 May 2014. Fast forward a little over 13 months and she suffered a breakdown on her way home from work. The clutch pedal went straight to the floor as she stopped to give way at a roundabout. Her car had to be towed by the AA who diagnosed a failure of the clutch master cylinder. This was confirmed by a garage (a different to the one which installed the new clutch 13 months earlier). The second garage replaced the clutch master cylinder but, have reported a noise from the clutch which they are saying is a failing clutch release bearing - they state it will fail within the next 3 to 6 months.

With the clutch release bearing being one of the 3 parts in the 3 part clutch pack which was replaced 13 months earlier, we are obviously somewhat confused. My girlfriend does not ride the clutch pedal and we would obviously expect a new clutch to last more than 13 months! With this in mind, we contacted the original garage who also say it should last a lot longer but, they are stating that the clutch itself has a 2 year warranty on it but, only 12 months labour. They therefore are saying they will have a look at the car and replace the 3 part clutch pack with a new one if they agree with the assessment of a failing clutch release bearing but, they say that:... You have a reported clutch noise - that was not noticed by yourselves.

Before spending time (=money) opening it all back up again, I'd get a second or third opinion....
